I don't know if this has been answered already... I haven't had much
time to read the 'jam lately, but here goes. In 5YIALT, is that Dimebag
with the camcorder? It's right after DT with Deep Purple and right
before MP with Vinnie Paul... for a couple of seconds, we see the back
of a guy with a Pantera t-shirt, a purple beard, and a camcorder...

i've been unemployed for 2 months now and i can't afford to renew my
membership in the DT fan club. if any of you receive an extra Christmas
cd, or, if you decide after you get your copy that you don't want it,
please contact me.
maybe by the time that they get shipped out, i'll be employed somewhere,
but, then it would still be too late to mail the $18 to England.

BTW, if you want to hear some fast double bass, get Emperor's

I read an interview with Labrie (I'm sure you did too) where he says that if he might do a solo album, but little later in his carrier. BUT, as he says, it won't be prog stuff, but more melodic and soft music (like George Michael etc.) Which is reasonable, afterall he IS a singer - he would do stuff concentrating on vocals. I don't think James listens much prog music. So if he does a solo album don't expect TTT stuff in there! :)
Example: Freddie Mercury: - Great Pretender - Barcelonna
are AWESOME songs but it's nothing like Queen stuff.
But anyway, it will be cool for LaBrie solo album to see the light of the day! --

Hey shaddup there! You're lucky compared to me! My roomie here ar UCLA listens to KBIG 104, which all SOCal people know and hate as some kind of lame love songs of the 80's and 90's station thats always playing Celine Dion, Bryan Adams and Peabo Bryson. Other than that she is very fond of Christian music. I think I would fall down and devote my life to God if she listened to anything as relatively un-annoying as Alanis, which is pretty bad cus Im an atheist. However, if it comes to pass in the future that she has as "accident", you can move in with me. ;P

I am sorry, but what makes you think everyone on this list, myself included that we are gonna vote for DT in every catagory ? I certainly wouldn't vote for Derek, specially when I think Jens Johansson is much better. At the risk of pissing eveyone off, here's my card:
BAND OF THE YEAR = Dream Theater ALBUM OF THE YEAR = Nightwish 'Oceanborn' SONG OF THE YEAR = Stratovarius 'SOS' BEST METAL/HARD ROCK BAND = Angra BEST MALE PERFORMER = Glenn Hughes BEST FEMALE PERFORMER = Tarja (Nightwish) BEST VOCALIST = Glenn Hughes BEST GUITARIST = John Petrucci (Dream Theater) BEST BASSIST = Thomas Miller (Symphony X) BEST DRUMMER = Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) BEST KEYBOARDIST = Jens Johansson (Stratovarius) BEST NEW BAND = N/A BEST VIDEO (CLIP) = Stratovarius 'SOS' BEST VIDEO (CASSETTE) = Dream Theater '5 Years' BEST CONCERT PERFORMANCE = Van Halen
Or should we all just vote for DT for the hell of it ? I think not :P

That's why I'm submitting twice. :D Once for DT and once for the ones I really feel deserve it. It's not really a point fo who you like and who you wish to vote for. It's who you like who is also going to get a decent quantity of votes. I mean Jens is a great keyboardist, but I don't think he's going to receive even a small percentage of votes that fuckin' Marilyn Manson chop is going to get. My votes didn't stray far from DT anyway, except I voted Geddy for bassist and Ray Alder for vocalist. And even though it will probably be grounds to them to discard my submissions altogether, Loreena McKennit gets best female performer in my book. ;) There are only two women who's voices I have absolutely fallen in love with: Loreena's and Lisa Glasgow's (Regeancy Singers and Orchestra). Their voices make my potty thing tingle. Makes you feel kind of guilty when one is a Christian singer, wot?

I urge you to check out Nightwish, their brand new album 'Oceanborn' is an absolute killer. They female singer 'Tarja' despite being a classically trained opera singer will have your jaw hitting the floor, her voice fits the music perfectly.

Hmm... I've been very bored with the prog scene lately. I really like what I've heard on the new DT live album, and I have to buy the Rush thing still... but live albums without really modified versions of tunes and new goofy stuff eventually die for me... so that's all on it's way out even before it's in my hands. The new Angra is really not nearly what I expected and I don't really like it a whole lot (LOVE their earlier stuff)... too many prog tunes are sticking to the same cliche ideas (including my own tunes)... it feels like Prog is stagnating. I wonder what new band is going to come out of absolute NOWHERE and just revolutionize the whole scene again, like DT did. Could it be the next QR? Doubtful. Maybe Metropolis II... Symphony X? I dunno... their albums are great metal, but not too experimental. I think jazz is ruining me. I need to see something more than just technically challenging these days, when I used to be satisfied merely by great drumming, guitars or vocals. Anyone else had this experience?
I think the next band to destroy the universe will have to be very technology friendly, with a psycho but tasteful guitarist, and a drummer who uses electronics with his regular kit. Keys will be massively important... and there will be bass or stick or Warr guitar. I'm thinking of a cross between DT, Crimson, and Pat Metheny Group "Imaginary Day" Anyone else have any thoughts as to this?
What would it take to shock you all? Dream Theater has made its mark, and will remain a constant in most if not all of our collections... but like Rush, they aren't going to have another explosion unless they completely re-define themselves (which would mean we lose the DT we have now... and I am loving the FII direction). We've all heard a lot of metal... run of the mill heavy metal isn't going to change our worlds any more. We've all heard prog rock. Same goes there. What about a marriage of the two along with some more experimental extreme, like Metheny or perhaps an improvisational experimental group like Phish? Maybe some really educated jazzers can be converted into prog metal dudes and we can get some sickly sophisticated improv with both rock and jazz sensibilities. Maybe that oughta be my own goal. Who knows. I just know I'm bored enough to have only read one out of 5 jams for the last 30 or so. I've only been buying jazz and fusion discs... I haven't even ventured out to search for new shredders and new prog bands (and anyone who has seen my collection in person knows that's abnormal for me. Bafu knows the extent of my shredder catalog... though Varney has a million and 3 unknown gods I still need unreleased stuff from).
In one sense, I hope I'm not alone in this... in another sense, I hope you're all totally finding everything that's coming out to be fresh and inspirational. It sort of sucks to have prog die on you.

He will leave the room if a preview comes on TV, will leave the theater, etc. He doesn't want any info about the movie till it comes out and he's in the front row. Hey I am considering the purchase of a Yamaha WX5 wind controller. I know most of us here are musicians, does anyone use one with their synth? Please email me and let me know what you think of it if you do. On a side note, I was driving home early sunday morning, and I was listening to a local alternative station. At 5:30, what do I hear? The live version of Take the Time off of OiAL!! I guess this station, 94.9 KROCK in Utica/Rome (NY) has this 6 hour program every Saturday night at midnight, and they play heavy, progressive music that youd never hear anywhere else. Any other time, theyre a shitty modern rock station just like anyother. But, at midnight on a Saturday, the DJ kicked things off with old Type-O-Negative, Fear Factory, DT, and a ton of other great stuff. If your in the vicinity of this station and you happen to be listening at this time, tune in! I think the program is called "The Sound and the Fury"

Hello, and Greetings from my planet to all you kickASS ytsejammers! This is one of my recent maXimisms:
>>>Amanda Rosenblum convinces a corner of her wall that she really IS Supergirl, and will now demonstrate her flying abilities by jumping off the moon:<<<
Sorry. That sounds stupid. I was going to say the Empire State building, but I wanted something crazier than that, like as if she THOUGHT she was on the moon, but it's not funny likr that at all. Retarded. Made me go "What?!?" when I re-read it. But empire State building would have been funny...
Southern California ska/swing band exulted in torturous psychosity as he vomits raisins on his girlfriend:
>>>From: "Steve Ferris" <stevo_14@hotmail.com><<<
I thought that said Save Ferris...
>>>.I just portnoy Wednesday night at a clinic in St Louis<<<
I wish I could portnoy. I'm not a good enough drummer to portnoy though. I hear maybe Bozzio can portnoy, but I think that's about it...
>>>and I just want to make sure everyone realizes he is a god on drums.<<<
maX is a moron. He thought you said "I just want to make sure everyone realizes he is good on drums." I was like "DUH!! Really?"... Then I re-read it and I'm like "Oh, he said 'a god'. Well, DUH, maX!! You moron!"
Mike Coulam exulted repeated yips and whines as he runs from the Ambassador and pees on his tail which is tucked between his legs:
>>>Hey Max<<<
That's maX. Close enough :)
>>>...So, my opinion is crap because I happen to listen to Sepultura? I didn'trealize that anyone with diverse musical taste isn't allowed toparticipate on this list.<<<
No, NO! Sorry you took it that way. I get REALLY defensive about my music, so I can understand. People on this list joke around with each other, and that's what I was doing.
While it's true that I don't listen to Sepultura or any other band with that kind of singer, or I interpret as being evil, I LOVE Ministry's Keianhho (some call it The Ruins or Psalm 69), and hey, I listen to CUSCO! A new age pan-flutey band! And Robert Miles, the techno dude. And Khaled, an arabic dude from Morocco living in France who does "Rai" music...
And am I wrong to assume you listen to Dream Theater? Anyone with enough sense to be a Dream Theater fan has decent taste in music.
Don't take me personally... or you'll really hate me before long.
And does ANYBODY know how to find EXTREMELY rare CDs?!?!?!?!
Thanks once again,
