So I guess because I'm on the Dream Theater list, I'm not allowed to be
on any other band's mailing list?? Is there some rule that says because
I subscribe to the Ytsejam, that Dream Theater has to be my absolute
favorite band?
Sheesh!

i believe it's "ing-vay". that's how steve vai pronoounced it, and he was talking about how he used to hang/jam with him, so i guess he'd have heard him mention his own name sometime during that time. or maybe he just said it wrong and Ingvay got real pissed and spouted balls of flame and so now he calls him the correct name. maybe. moo.

You know, one of the the reasons why I bought a CD-RW drive is to make some compies of some CDs that I have and that I can't dream on getting another, even if I offer a lot of money. Some very obscure bands with out-of-print titles...
And I want to listen to them on my car CD player, but will I carry those jewels on my car? Certainly not. That's the purpose of CD-R copies. :-)

Hi all,
what is all this Swedish crap doing in an international list like this?!?
In jam 4447, greger.ronnqvist@infodata.sema.se provided us with a review of the Argentinian group 2112's latest album - in Swedish. Hmmmm...
In #4448, sopot@pistons.cybercon.com offers us all to become millinaires overnight - in Swedish. A bit off topic, maybe?
Am I going crazy or what?

Christina, one mistake you made is to assume that, just because the people here are subscribed to a Dream Theater mailing list, DT is their favorite band. That assumption is simply not true. I can speak for myself (and Dream Theater is tied at first with another band -- a Death Metal band everybody should know by now :-) ), but I do know other people here who also prefer Metallica, Megadeth, Angra, Genesis, Rush and Opeth as their.
So, that explains why I'd should Kerry Minnear as the best keyboardist or Gentle Giant as the best Band.
We understand your passion for Derek, but different people will like different keyboardists, of course. :-)
[]s, Roger...
P.S.: BTW, why are you always so excited to vote for your favorite artists on such-and-such magazine? I simply can't understand the urge to vote -- will the artists become better just because they appear as the no. 1 of the poll? Will you like the artists even more than you already do after they appear as the first position? Will be satisfied with that? Will you reach an orgasm with that? :-)
Now, seriously, is the artist "better" just because he/she/it (in the case of Marilyn Manson) won the poll? IMO, getting a large number of votes in a poll just measures popularity/unpopularity. "Quality" (whatever that means -- it's subjective) in the music field can't be measured by any objective means, let alone by passionate votes to a magazine poll.

I'd like to know if anyone knows what happened to old singer from Helloween? (not Kai but the one from the Keeper of the Seven Keys albums)
His name is Michael Kiske of course, and he had a falling out with some of the other members of Helloween 2 albums after Keeper II, so he left the band. He made a guest appearence on Gamma Ray's Land of the Free album on one song and about two years ago released a solo album. There is some metal stuff on it, but overall its very experimental. I really didn't like it. It was some of his experimental stuff on the two albums after Keeper II (Pink Bubbles Go Ape and Chameleon) that eliminated him from the band. Presently he is working on a new solo album, and bashing metal in general because of how "Uncreative" it is, or so he says. He's basically turned into a real asshole in my opinion.

Hello! I've noticed that you have been talking about this awesome drummer dude called Virgil Donati. He is a monster.I've seen a video where he plays a drum solo and jams with Derek Sherinian and it's just great.Virgil practised in Australia about 6 hours a day and you can see it.His feet are wonderful you know.I know something about his practising but do you gyus know how Mike Portnoy practised when he was a "teenager".It really amuses me that he listened bands like The Beatles,YES and Rush, and he became this kind of drummer. If you know, could you tell me about his drumming when he was kid, please.By the way,Virgil Donati plays with Derek Sherinian in my friends CD.My friend is a guitar player and he was in MI last year.I have to mention that this guitarist SINGS in our band where I play drums ;-).

I could give a rats ass what some unknown Swedish reviewer said. Have you listened to the album? How does it compare to other King's X albums? How does it compare to other prog group's latest albums? Is King's X even a prog group? Don't be a sheep! Investigate for yourself.

Well, I have to tell my sob story to all of you. A few months back, Mark B. posted a new list of drum clinics that MP would be hosting. This included a date in Denver. After seeing him last year in Arvada, CO, I knew that I couldn't miss this one.
Time passed. During this period, I hooked up via email with Patrick Sebal from Eindhoven, Netherlands. Patrick was going to be visiting the Denver area during this time, and wanted a ride to the drum clinic. How could I deprive a fellow jammer of this opportunity?! Besides, it was his last full day in the states. He'd be spending 16 hours on Sunday flying back to the Netherlands.
So, early last week, I spend my entire lunch hour driving down to South Denver to pick up tickets for myself, Patrick and a friend (not too bad at $8 each). I'm getting really excited by this point. By last Friday, when I read all the St. Louis clinic reviews, I'm having a hard time concentrating. This is going to be too cool. I rush out and purchase a new NiMH battery for my camcorder, on the off chance they'll let me set up my tripod and videotape the entire clinic.
Finally, The Day (Saturday, Nov. 21) had arrived. I'm pumped, I'm prepared, and I head out to pick up Patrick, who was staying in Boulder. What a great guy he turns out to be! I'm really happy that they teach English as a second language in the Netherlands, because I'd never understand a word of Dutch. We head over to grab a bite to eat at a sports bar across from the Colorado University campus. Only then does it hit me how unusual the states must be for people from Europe. Patrick got to see first hand how incredibly nuts for "Football" Americans really are. The place is packed to the gills, with about 15 televisions broadcasting approx. 6 college football games. Fans are going nuts every few seconds, with the exception of myself and my friend, who could give a shit less about sports in general. Patrick goes for the buffalo wings, which he had recently discovered in New York (?!). We grub on our food, and head on out to the (High School) auditorium where the clinic is scheduled. Patrick brought along a cassette copy of the Rotterdam fan club gig. I got to hear some of the songs that weren't on 5YiaL. I'm so jealous, this show must have been really something to see live.
So, we get to the school, and I've got my camera bag swung over my shoulder, with my tripod in hand. No one questions me whatsoever as I walk in the door with the video equipment. The excitement is almost too much. I'm finally going to get one of Mike's clinics on video!! This might actually be the first "trading" material I ever got first hand! We wait 15 minutes or so in the very long, winding line before entering the auditorium. Once in, we sprint towards the right front area, and stake out perfect seats next to the aisle and !!!...an A/C outlet! I didn't need batteries after all...no worrying about running out of juice 15 minutes before the clinic's over. This was just turning out too damn good!
Then the Rupp's Drums representative steps up to the mike. "You may have all heard already, but Mike Portnoy will not be here tonight. He is sick tonight, and can't perform." My stomach sinks to the floor. I had overheard something in line earlier, but had just passed it off as a bad joke. I can't believe that Mike isn't going to be here. There was one other drummer scheduled to be a part of the double-header clinic, and he takes the stage. This isn't at all what I was expecting.
Frustrated and dissappointed, we decide to head out. I'm sure the other guy/guys were badass...but we came specifically to see Mike. We ask the Rupp's Drums people about a refund, and they hesitantly comply, even though they think we are crazy for leaving right before "Virgil" starts his clinic. We don't know who the hell "Virgil" is. When we ask, they just look at us like we are bass players and go "Uhh..Never mind...here's your money." I guess the DT shirts all three of us were wearing gave us away. Now, if it had been Terry Bozzio...we might have stuck around...but he had his Denver clinic last week.
On the way back from Denver to Boulder, we almost wipe out my Intrepid with a 16 point deer standing frozen in the middle of the two-lane highway we were driving (sorry to scare the shit out of you, Patrick!) That was good for an adrenaline rush, but not enough to change my sour mood. We dropped Patrick off in Boulder, and headed home...bummed for the rest of the night.
Well, that's my story (I think I hear tiny violins playing the background). Mike, I really hope you are feeling better. I know that myself, and about 3 of my friends have been down with this cold/flu thing over the past few weeks. It can certainly drain every drop of energy from your body. Stay on the fluids, and get better soon. Then, reschedule another clinic in the Denver area as soon as possible!! I'll be there, whenever it happens.

Place Genesis albums "Nursery Cryme" through "Three Sides Live" into a CD player, and listen to them. Analyze them. Then, any "Brand X" album into a CD player, and listen to it. Analyze it. Watch any videos you can find of him actually _drumming_. Then, return to "Nursery Cryme" and listen to the "Fountain of Salmacis" again. Listen to "In the Cage" on "Three Sides Live". Listen to live "Firth of Fifth". Listen to his drum duets with Chester Thompson. Then, realize the error of your statement.

ok, SO i READ THIS STUFF AND IT'S LIKE, "tHAT'S TOTALLY ME!" nO, BUT i'M GETTING RATHER SICK OF THE SAME STUFF, AS WELL. i'VE BEEN LISTENING TO A LOT OF THE dIXIE dREGS RECENTLY AND A LOT OF pHISH. tHE TYPE OF STUFF i'M WRITING IS KIND OF TENDING TOWARDS dIMEOLA/mORSE WITH LYRICS AND VOCALS AND METAL THROWN IN FOR GOOD MEASURE. uNFORTUNATELY, THOUGH IT DOES NECESSITATE A LOT OF KEYS, ESPECIALLY GOOD OLD-FASHIONED PIANO SOUNDS, AND i'M NOT MUCH OF A a keyboardist, writing is getting slower and slower. BTW, sorry about all those cap letters, forgot about the caps-lock key. :) Can you say blind boy? Anyway, the only way to come up with new stuff these days is to tear more musical boundaries down. I'd love to see DT incorporate a more Phish-type jam session. I mean, not the sloppiness and all the noise necessarily, but definitely get a little more improv-oriented with a bigger jazz flavor. If Petrucci could learn some more jazz voicings, that'd be really cool, too. Mads, you and I should get together some time. I think we're thinking on the same lines. Be well. Matt B
