I just got a bunch of CD's and a video from my CD pimp, so here
goes a brief review of them:
NIGHTWISH 'Oceanborn'
This band haven taken over from Stratovarius as my fave Finish
band, this album is simply breathtaking. Imagine a more
progressive Stratovarius, better song writing, with the voice of an
angel, her being Tarja, an opera singer. Not a dud track on the
album, if I could give this more than 10/10 I would.
Looking for something a little different, then try this :)
RHAPSODY 'Symphony Of Enchanted Lands'
Most of you know how much I like this band and my high
expectations of this album. It has lived up to the hype,
not too dissimilar to to the first album, more epic songs, great
musicianship, classical pieces.Nuff said, 10/10
CHILDREN OF BODOM "Something Wild'
Another great band from Finland, I'd compare them to Dimmu
Borgir, classy death metal, with lots of great keyboards and of
course the 'standard' cooky monster vocals. 9/10
SYMPHONY X 'Live In Olympus'
A great audience recorded bootleg from 28/06/98, all the great SX
songs are here, spoilt only slighlty by some audience singing close
to the recording device on a couple of songs.The band prove to be
quite a fairly good live band, despite having a lot of complex songs.
Bootleg quality A-.
MICHAEL ROMEO Guitar Instructional Video
This guy is simply jaw dropping to watch, he makes everything
look so simple. Highlights are his jamming to a couple of
Symphony X songs, even when he does them slow they still
sound great. I am throwing away my guitar after watching this,
in the immortal words of Spinal Tap, 'why bother' :)

This may have already been mentioned here, but today I received my regular
issue of Guitar World in the mail and there is a HUGE article about Prog rock
inside! They reviewed some of the classic albums like Yes "Close to the Edge",
King Crimson "In the Court...", and also the neo prog stuff like Marillion
"Misplaced Childhood", Spock's Beard "The Kindness...", LTE, and (of all the
groups I never thought I would see in a magazine and one of MY favorite
groups), Ozric Tentacles "Arborescence". There was even an interview with Neal
Morse and Spock's Beard.
In the same issue there is also a guitar lesson with Rush (Geddy and Alex).
Every prog rocker must get this issue (Guitar World, Jan 1999).

Good hell. How many jammers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Beyond the Mirror is a progressive metal band, formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA in 1994. Their influences include Queensryche, Van Halen, Dream Theater, Alice in Chains, Rush, Kiss, Kansas, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Carl Palmer and Phil Collins.
The singer is a combination between Bruce Dickinson, James LaBrie and Geoff Tate. Besides the very good vocals, there's also some intricate heavy guitars influenced by Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. In fact the whole group contains very talented musicians. Although their music is very heavy with many mood and tempo changes, the songs are very melodic with catchy choruses.
The best tracks are "Take Me Higher", "Familiar Stranger", "Lie", "I'll Never Forget", the instrumental "The Warrior" and "I'm The One".
This is a CD that I strongly recommend if you like melodic progressive metal.

I think Chris brings up an interesting point here, and it's something I've been thinking about. Too put it quite simply: Aren't you guys getting bored of hearing chromatic runs in 7/8? High pitched vocals? Spastic drumming? The so called progressiveness of prog isn't really progressing at all. But oddly enough there seems to be a minor resurgence of the genre. Modern Drummer has been reviewing prog albums like crazy, and didn't someone post about Guitar World having a bunch of progressive albums reviewed? There is interest. So why the dichotomy? On the one hand we have a genre of music that touts itself as groundbreaking. Yet how can you be groundbreaking if know one knows you, AND you rely upon the same musical formulas (unison fast playing, odd times). On the other hand we see DT generate enough interest for a record company to put out a double album and a video. We see a record label seemingly devoted to progressive artists born (Magna Carta). I've been looking at this last paragraph for 10 minutes, and I still can't quite put my finger on an answer. I think the "stagnation" that Chris mentions is the reason I like FII so goddamn much. All of these prog bands have these keyboard players that are born and bred on European classical music. I think Derek has made Dream Theater quite unique with his "american guitarist" approach to keys. They've also incorporated (what a cool word.."put in the body") rhythms not commonly found in prog (TAMP's latin, the fusion-esque vibe of LiTS) and made them work, IMO. They have a long solo section that is entirely in 4/4 (Trial of Tears)!! James ditches the operatic vocals and sings more palateably. The next out of nowhere band, I think, is going to have to mix up the styles in this manner. How about a clave rhythm as the basis to a rock song? Wouldn't that rule? Instead of a piece with vocals and a solo section, how about an instrumental, but the solo section is actually a bunch of layered vocals with no instruments? I have ALWAYS wanted to do this, but no one thinks this is a good idea. How about making an instrument that does quarter tones like in classical indian music? This could open up an entire universe of sonic possibilities. This is the sort of thing to which the "progressive" moniker ought to be applied. I simply don't think that ther genre we love so much deserves this self-congratulatory title anymore. Music rules. Rahul Ananda

I agree with Lisa on this. of course if you like a band, vote for them! the word " idiot" shoud be attached to whoever originally asked "should we vote for our favoritive band?". but you can like other bands and vote for them as well ( in the words of Lisa ).. i havent seen a law banning voting for our fave band and music.

About this message, i remember that Michael Kiske solo album ' Instant = Clarity ' had Kai Khansen and Adrian Smith as guests. Was a good album, = but in only 2 or 3 songs was a little bit of heavy metal. This album = sounds more like ' Chameleon'. Michael finnished the recordings for a = new solo cd , called ' Decisional Times'. I hope this new comes a little = bit more metal.

I can't say I fit this definition cuz I've just recently started to get really into it. I think the progressive monicre fits a more diverse range than perhaps you realize. For a dose of new stuff that is different from the "prog norm" check out Superior. I have heard most of their 2 albums Behind and Younique and am currently planning on adding them to my collection. They have the precise rhtyhm and complexity of a great prog band but at the same time their songs tend to be slower, without the lavish solo sections, and with more emphasis on emotion. One of their guitarists Bernd Basmer is also a ytsejammer, so check em out if you already haven't (probly everybody on this list has heard their stuff and I'm makin a fool of myself, but hey I'm used to it!).

Once again it's that time of the year when even the idea of songs like Innocence Faded makes me want to vomit, so I'm looking for some CDs to match my mood and thought that perhaps some people on this list would like to help. What I'm hoping to find is something jazzy, bossa nova kind of music (maybe mr.Paycheck could help on this one) but I'd also like to know about bands with music similiar to In This Room by The 3rd and the Mortal, or Omnio by In the Woods (any suggestions mr.Gallop?). But basically any CD with beautiful, moody music and at least decent lyrics will do fine. If you have any suggestions I'd like to hear them. And yes, I already have Chroma Key.

True. But try thinking of it this way - many Metal Edge readers (who are those people anyway?) probably don't know who DT are. But of course, if you're gonna vote - vote for someone you think deserves it.
