The reason to vote for our favorite artist is to get them some more
recognition. If someone sees a band they've never listened to before win a
reader's poll or something, that might make them check out the band in
question. (Although I will admit, seeing my favrite band's name in
    headlines is EXTREMELY sexual! :P

Chris Kontos is no longer with the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning, but he's currently playing for The Manitoba Moose, of the International Hockey League. .... waitaminute...... drummer for Machine Head? OK, either we're talking about different guys here, or Chris is one multi-talented fellow! ;)

YES. YES. YES. I've also recently discovered Superior's "Behind" (damn, that sounded perverted!), and I'll be damned if it isn't one of the best CD's I've ever heard! Way to go Bernd! --

    >Sedai, or a friend suggested to me in the context of Nynaeve, and tell me

You know, that makes a lot of sense to me. Just a quick side question: How many jammers also read WoT? I was the first person I know who got into it, and that was years ago, when the first few books had been released. I've met a few people who also read it, but overall I'm one of the only people I know who read it.

But back to the Nynaeve/DT matter. One of the lyrics especially got me interested, toward the end of the song; the last few lyrics are: "Tonight I'll still be lying here / Surrounded in all the light." That makes perfect sense when speaking of Aes Sedai, since when they embrace the Source they get surrounded in a glow.

Also, in terms of Nynaeve, the words "I know it's easier to walk away than look it in the eye" could mean her struggle with trying to learn to cope with being a wilder and learning how to use the Source and get rid of her block. Also, when she took her test to become Accepted, she almost DID run away while she was inside the rings (when she was in a vision of being with Lan)... And then at the last minute decided to go back.

Or the words "She will slowly yield the light / As I awaken from the longest night". Those could mean her "awakening" to her new life as an Aes Sedai.

I like that analogy that you brought up, Brad. Gave me a whole new way of thinking about it.

It was the allusions to light and an ivory tower (that one is obvious) that first turned me onto it. I've always felt like DT had a window on things that go on in my life cuz their lyrics seem to match them exactly or at least deal with stuff that I've seen happen to friends or am interested in ah well. glad to see someone else is aware of the eerie similarities now as well.

I've heard Superior. I like them. They remind me of a mix between Savatage and something from 1988, the year of thrash heaven. I think it's cool. But it's not that new. Do I sound like a record company exec? Here's an idea... let's get ourselves a band with a female vocalist, two stick players, no guitarist, and a percussionist who plays tonal instruments as well as normal drums and cymbals. Then we'll teach them about serialism, give them a book by Ayn Rand, and a copy of Dianetics by L Ron Hubbard, and make them write an epic based on a fictional Ayn Rand translation of Dianetics, and a literary critique by a fictional L Ron clone, because all the cool books have already been written about in epic tunes. We'll call it FFFGWQ because all the good band names are taken. Then we'll bomb the studio before they finish recording the album, and we'll all just wonder "what could have been?"

I love Tribal Tech. I want to steal all of Greg Howe's chops. I do not care about when the next Rush studio release will come out, because we've already heard it. I concur with Rahul about FII. I was so totally expecting something else (as you'll remember, I refused to get any samples because like the Star Wars folk, I didn't want to lose anything by hearing it ahead of time.) DT probably isn't going to walk any further on the wild side than Metropolis II. I don't get the vibe that they're too into that tune or what it represents, because if they were all into that kind of crazy technical craft the way they were, why have they only rehearsed it once, and why isn't it out? That's not a bad thing. I rather think that LitS is about the best song they've ever done, and Derek is not only a great keyboardist but also a really fresh mind with regard to weird but usable sounds. I like what DT is doing. I just hope they're as into it as we all are. Blah blah blah. It's early, and yet I'm blabbering, so I'm going to sleep. Later!

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids.....

If that isn't a Subject: line that kicks, I don't know what is. :)

Karol! wants to know: >Hammerfall. I've heard a lot about this band recently... how do >they sound like?

Pure power metal with a strong 80's flavor. More fantasy-inspired than most bands from the 80's were, but there are a lot of anthemic-type vocals and assertions that metal will never die as long as we stick together and support it. :) /me bangs his head furiously thinking how he's going to be in da front row for Hammerfall in a couple weeks.....

    >Another thing: does anyone know something about celtic music type >bands? Any suggestions/comments?

Depends on what version of "Celtic" you refer to.

Celtic rock: Tempest. Celtic pop: Clannad, Loreena McKennitt (though Loreena throws a lot of Middle Eastern influences in too). Celtic new age: David Arkenstone's "The Celtic Book of Days", Enya, Adiemus (Adiemus also throws in lots of Middle Eastern influences). Traditional Celtic melodies and performances: The Chieftains (preferably with flutist James Galway). Chapman Stick played in a Celtic (and Spanish) style: Bob Culbertson's "A Moment in Time".

"TSM" remarked: >Once again it's that time of the year when even the idea of songs like >Innocence Faded makes me want to vomit, so I'm looking for some CDs to >match my mood and thought that perhaps some people on this list would >like to help. What I'm hoping to find is something jazzy, bossa nova >kind of music

For a good dose of jazz-flavored mostly acoustic music, try anything by Jesse Cook ("Vertigo" and "Gravity" are good choices). Bob Culbertson's solo Chapman Stick release "Cafe San Francisco" has a very jazzy, bluesy feel to it. Also, Joe Satriani's self-titled release is strongly jazz- and blues-influenced.

    >but I'd also >like to know about bands with music similiar to In This Room by The 3rd >and the Mortal, or Omnio by In the Woods (any suggestions mr.Gallop?).

Dunno about Neil, but if you haven't already gotten everything by Therion (excellent dark metal with a full choir and orchestra, plus great vocals) then you must do so now; "Theli" and "Vovin" are both must-haves. For some ethereal music with slight gothic tendencies and a haunting female voice, three releases by the Changelings are worth getting (self-titled, "Terra Firma" and "Amphibian"). Already mentioned under the Celtic list above is Adiemus, which is purely magical in its darkly orchestrated music and floating choral vocals. Finally, for a more metallic feel, grab up Fates Warning's "A Pleasant Shade of Gray".

I think by voting for DT we will help promote them. If DT are high in the polls, sure, some people won't give a damn, but to the DT-virgins out there, seeing DT rank up high might get them to check them out. It's all promoting. Hell, Elektra doesn't do enough of it, so we might as well help DT the best we can.

I think what chris said holds true for a lot of prog fans after a while. I started out getting all the stuff, you know:

Dream Theater - "Fu(*k! this is awesome" then came Fates Warning, etc. then came along stuff like Shadow Gallery ("dude this rules!!!)" but after a while, it starts losing that special feeling to it. Like the new Shadow gallery, I got it to very little fanfare, and even though I like it, it's nothing that I haven't really heard before, nothing that makes me want to call my friends up and say, "check this out" because it's familiar turf. I don't know if it's as much as a problem in Prog as it is in personal preferences or whatever. Prog is what prog is, as long as we keep defining it as sounding like Dream Theater "Images and Words."

these days, what i find most fulfilling is the truly creative and original diverse stuff and leading the way is the main man, Devin Townsend. In just over 20 months, this guy has released Strapping Young Lad "City," Ocean Machine "Biomech," and "INFINITY," each in their own right some of the "purest" music I have ever heard. It comes straight from the soul, and it doesn't set out to be a genre or do anything other than what it is. It is what it is.

And i think that's where my future in music lies, in the creative, original stuff like that, like Chroma Key, Samael. Heck, that's why I think it's great to see bands like Marillion, Superior, and even Dream Theater constantly morphing into something new, something different - even if you may not like the latest incarnation it's not the same old album you've heard.

Don't get me wrong though, I still get stuff like Shadow Gallery, Angra (and I do like the new one), threshold, etc. But the real excitement lies in the unknown, and whether it's classified as prog or not, it's where i am.

    cool.
