Here's my take on it...'prog' has always been stupid, self-indulgent,
boring, and pointless. It just takes some people a while to realize it. ;)

But really... in my ever-so-fucking-humble opinion, all music is going
    downhill the last few years.

As far as I'm concerned, the only classics to come out in this decade are
Chroma Key, Pearl Jam "Ten," "Images and Words," and Anthrax "Sound of
White Noise." These are the only albums that have made me sit up and go,
"What the fuck is this?" They blew my mind. They made me sit and rethink my
entire musical sphere. They excited me in a way that other
good-but-not-great albums can't match, because they sound *new*.

Here's hoping that 1999 brings something that can compare.

I have seen other bands do things over the Web e.g. Ozric Tentacles,
Primus, has DT? If not would they consider it? I never experienced the
above broadcasts maybe they don't work too well!

When the Ozrics did it they released a limited run of CD copies of the
         concert / broadcast.

Ok, nobody needs to be forced to vote, but the more votes they get, the more
more coverage they will receive...come on guys, maybe you don't read that
mag, but they always published cool pix from DT... I've seen good pix from
Mr. M.Portnoy with his daughter Melody, a pic from Mr. Petrucci and the
twins and some interesting interviews with the band...

and it's always COOL to receive an award ;-)

If you don't feel the urge to vote, don't do it, but remember recognization
is cool and keeps the band selling stuff

AMEN. The above statements hit the nail on the head for me. When I heard
FII, I said to myself, "This is it. This is the music I've been hearing in
my head." I'd been listening to a lot of prog stuff, and thinking "Wow. This
is all really good, but it's all... the same." FII was such a breath of
fresh air for me. I really hope DT continues in this direction - it seems
that way, with the way their B-sides are sounding (far less
technically-oriented and more poppy [for lack of a better term] songs).

Don't get me wrong. There's something that'll always make my spine shiver
when I hear the guitar/keyboard solo in Metropolis I. But how many times can
you do that before your audience says, "Been there, done that."? Or, more
importantly, before you yourself say, "I'm tired of playing these insanely
    fast scalar runs. What now?"

It's very tough to find new, fresh stuff out there. That's why I've been
throwing myself into different veins of music lately. My roommate is way
into jazz, and at first, I *hated* jazz. Couldn't stand it, didn't think it
had any purpose, and wouldn't have any of it. Slowly, though, I've been
finding myself getting into some fusion-y type stuff (i.e. Vital Tech Tones,
Show Me What You Can Do), and really getting into some New Age stuff as
well. Why? Because it's different. It's not the same stuff that I've been
listening to for almost two years now, maybe.

Why am I even sending this? Maybe I feel as though I have to justify to you
all why I've been shying away from progressive music lately? Maybe I have to
justify it to myself, and this is my outlet? I dunno. *sigh* More to come
after the first cup of coffee...

Errr, can someone tell me what's the connection between Tribal Tech and

So, does he play guitar in TT?

Ah, this brings back memories. In the good old days, Tommy Lee always used to swipe the '#1' keyboardist spot. Now we have to stand for second rate players like Marilyn getting the spotlight.. sic transit gloria mundi.

Chris mentioned something about Superior sounding to him like a cross between 1988 thrash and Savatage. While that may have been true (to a certain extent) with "Behind," it is obvious to me that he has NOT listened to YOUnique. That cd sounds NOTHING like Savatage or 1988 thrash. It may not be the most ground-breaking cd ever released, but it's coming close in 1998. Give it a listen. By the way, maybe I should lend my nick to Chris....

hi all, since I am reading a lot lately, what is the name of the book that suggests allusions to Surrounded? WoT? I thought Ninaeve was in Mists of Avalon, but then...

I just had to skip 15 jams, because I didn't have time to read them all, I just wanted to say that I just had a very good trade experience (although I am more in CD's than in tapes), but the Noorderlight gig I got in return was a really nice boot of Fix for 96, way better quality than my CD, and the audience volume is fucking cool. I get chills everytime when those people sing "the smile of dawn" or " lost in the skyiaay, clouds roll by and I roll with them, tatata tatata". It's almost like the feeling(which I guess is untopable(does this word exist)) I get from this one live version of BJ's Blaze of Glory (I know it's by JBJ, but tis is a BJ performance) where the audience sings the complete first verse and he goes "yeah".

Anyway, what I really have to say, that although I agree with people stating that a solo on a record should be reproduced the same way live, because there's a reason for the solo being the solo it is, I think that the intro(wtf is he talking about, solo, now intro) of LitS on OiaL gives it another boost. Tasty !!! The whole performance of this song makes it my fav song even more...

"What were we thinking." Listening to Fix for 96 versions of e.g. LitS brought this JP line back to mind. I'm glad for most changes they made, but osn't it amazing how early in the songwriting process he has the solo almost ready?

Just received my 5YIAL video. Been watching it, I think it's pretty cool. A must have for DT fans.

Did anyone notice the keyboard snafu that occured when they did the Pink Floyd "Have a Cigar" section. Derek spins around to his Trinity facing MP, ready to jump in and double up the lead guitar, and viola!, no sound! The next time they show Derek he's punching buttons up there on the Trinity, possibly trying to fix it.

I've always thought that it would be hard to keep all of your voices and patches straight on those synths. Especially when you're playing live and changing sounds all the time. I'm surprised that doesn't happen more often. Then again, it could have been the soundman who had turned it off at the mixing board...who knows?

P.S. A friend said something pretty funny when I forced him to watch. He asked where the show was, and I told him it was Europe. He said "wow, that's cool, and he's singing it all in another language for them!?". Had to laugh and tell him it was all english.

I ask because a "friend" spilt something nasty on a Rainbow CD of mine and it won't open up without tearing the pages to bits, so I'm a little pissed about that, but accidents happen. PLEASE if you know about getting new liners, preferably in the UK, drop me a line privately. So, there I was reading the last love-filled edition of Yitz-eee-digest and hd to see some items upon which I decided to share my gifted insight.

The CyberDuke clenched his fists, gritted his teeth, shoved huge wads of cottonballs in his ears and boldly proclaimed: >Sorry Korgy, I'm not familiar with the guy! (Lawrence Welk)

This is completely unbelievable! A Yitz-Ay jammer who has not heard the king of swinging accordion?? Will wonders never cease! Everyone rush out and hear him; he can Shred (as you can see, with a capital s). </sarcasm>

But on the other hand, Pat Metheny is a very talented musician; both "Road to You" (the live disc he issued in '93) and his most recent Imaginary Day are very good. Another fusion player who was/is decent is Lee Ritenour. His early (i.e. 70's) work include the theme from Seven Days of the Condor (great movie!).

Phillip in mentioning Devin Townsend's prolific output neglected to mention SYL's "No Sleep 'til Bedtime (live in Australia)." I'm still looking for Biomech and Infinity. I guess I'm looking in all the wrong places.

And finally, Buffoon Vai made me laugh out loud as he patently belabored the obvious response to Stodgers. I couldn't help myself and now have my very own copy of the trailer which I watch over and over. Of course, without a sound card, I feel like I might be missing something...naahh.

How about Liquid Tension Experiment for Best New Artist!!! I believe they do qualify since their first album was this year. I voted for a lot of Dream Theater, except I chose Geddy Lee for bassist (the Driven bass solo on Different Stages rocks my world!!!) I voted for the new Dream Theater video, but I had to vote for Rush in one of the spots.
