Someone had asked how they could special order Devin Townsend's
"Infinity" via the Internet. CDEurope has it in.
    http://www.cdeurope.com

As far as bands that are mentioned here on the 'jam, I'd say they
pretty much have the best selection - especially that hard to find
European stuff we Americans crave so much!!!

Anyway, give 'em a try. Their prices aren't exactly "discount", but
    they're better than some.

I've got a couple CD's in mind that only CDEurope carries. They've got
    the inside scoop!

    - Dr. Teeth

P.S. By the way, Devin is God! Natural Science, baby!!! ;)

I'd actually recommend Knights of the Round
(http://www.knightsoftheround.com/) as far as imports. I've never had a
problem with them, they have Excellent customer service, they are fast,
carry about everything prog, and they aren't expensive on most of their
stuff. Right now, they've got Superior's "YOUnique" for $14.99/free
shipping and Power of Omen's "Eyes of the Oracle" for $12.99/free shipping.
No worries, mine are already on order. :) </shameless plug for favorite

DREAM THEATER - A Change of Seasons Prior to the recording of this album, I was asked to become a bandmember of Dream Theater. I was unavailable because I was touring with Billy Joel at that time. However, I was able to make time to do some synthesizer programming on this EP.

I cant believe I have been given a second chance to see DT!!! Good thing Im going to the east coast for Xmas, or at least I think I am. For the record, I was raised by a mother who only likes oldies, and a father who wouldnt let me listen to the radio in the car because "music is a nuisance".. All I got from friends was alternative. And yes, I am metalhead. (well, im becoming one, anyway). I dont know how I ever lived without the stuff. > > A lowly *chick* bass player, > Juli

C'mon, Juli, lets put these guys in their places! We need more female guitarists and bassists.

Esthetic pondering can be very confusing. Appropriate conceptualization of the fundamentals of any subject always is. (For some reason that is beyond me, it seems to lead to some very angry folks also.) However, I think one point that can be filtered out of all of this and one with which I think that most people, if they think on it as sufficiently and impartially as possible, will agree is that given two pieces of music that are exactly alike in all other evaluative respects, the more complex one will always be better. Any reduction in quality of a more complex piece, it would seem, is the result of either the inability of the musician to do justice to such a sophisticated piece or the musician's neglect of the other aspects of the piece in his/her attempt to make it more complex. Finally, as much as I like DT, and as good as they are, their compositions, in terms of raw complexity, can't hold a candle to most classical composers. You can pick a random piece by Bach and be about 90% sure that it's more complex than any prog composition that's ever been written. Conclusion of these very different paragraphs: Complexity, ceteris paribus, does make any given piece better. However, it doesn't seem to be the only dimension of esthetic goodness, and people who think it is should be trading their prog (and jazz) for some nice baroque. jason

The most recent discussions have (for once) gaught my attention - so brutally I feel this strong urge to reply... (You don't have to read this, it's only therapy for me (really got nothing to say).)

    C. Ptacek: > ...it feels like Prog is stagnating.

    Y. Hilal: > I suspect that prog will eventually die for most of the > ppl on this list. I figure it's just human nature.

Those were wise words. And perhaps you're both right. Even though prog, according to me, has one of the widest spectres and encourages more experimental solutions to arrangements, techniques and songwriting, the genre will be overfed some day - if it isn't gone that way already.

I we look at FII, it certainly gives a new breeze to the movement of DT. Although I feel a bit uncertain upon it. Occasionally, it's the best goddamn album I've heard. Occasionally, I don't give a damn about it or think it stinks. Perhaps this is because it's somewhat like a total turnaround in their progress. I'm not used to it yet - guess I'll never be. And yeah, the 90's prog bands are all just a bunch of copycats. DT are copycats as well, but they do a good job hiding it in great music. IOW, they're so fucking great so you just don't care.

I'm quite new to prog, so my first thought when I hear of musicians getting tired of 32-note chromatic scales in 200 bpm is like "Fuck off ya snorky bitch! You can't possibly mean that!". But when I give it a second thought, it seems fully understandable. So think twice before you spit on people who claims that "less is more".

Which brings me to another subject - "less is more". I find it as a matter of style. Your style is what you play. If you freak out and play fast, you're of a "shredder"-style. If you play pentatonics, slow but emotionally, you're of a "bluesy" style. It depends on what you play if "less is more". Sometimes that statement is true.

Eight months ago, I was quite new to bass playing in bands, and I wanted to show off and come up with funny lines and stuff. I plucked in fills whenever I had the opportunity. It didn't improve my playing - certainly not on songs like "Still got the blues" or "Hotel California"... After a while, I got rid of all that pseudo-spectacular lines, and the songs sounded better and better - so there was less more. But if you put Phil Rudd (AC/DC, FYI) in 80's Dream Theater, the band would lose its style. So if you want to play in a style which demands technique and, well... "shredding", less isn't more at all times.

IMO, Pink Floyd would have sucked with e.g. Steve Vai on guitar. 70's Yes couldn't possibly have managed with David Gilmour.

"Less is more" is just a big fucking "It depends...".

Bullocks' time's passed. Therapy's over. Back to the cruel reality.

Yeah. That kind of makes me want to scream out "Vinnie Colaiuta" once again. I got hooked on that guy's playing after "Mercury Falling" by Sting. GodDAMNit, this is simple, yet very melodic and powerful underneath and leaves no question about the man's abilities.

And there's of course Bozzio (again!) on "Impact 2 - Fading Fast". (Probably the only song this far on the Explorers' Club disc that I love unconditionally.)

And I'm delighted to see that this Portnoy-guy hasn't been overplaying that much as of late. :-)

Ordered Bozzio's "Chamber Works" and "Drawing The Circle". Expect sad news from me. My dying of delight for instance.

It's TLF, acoustic version, with two singers. Sounds like JLB and... Geddy Lee! Has this happened or am I a just a deaf nutcase? I haven't heard anything of any DT performance with Geddy Lee.

ROAD DIARY UPDATE - Nov. 22, Millbrook NY. - Liquid Tension repairs it's leak.

We're back in the studio, finishing the album we started last month. JohnPetrucci's baby is doing fine, and the hiatus the baby urged on this project seems to have been worthwhile - my fingers are certainly nimbler now, after some Crimson touring. As I write this, at midnight, the other guys are still in the studio - having taken barely a break all day from writing and learning the newest LTE epic. Their endurance amazes me. Sometime this week I've got to get some practice time in for the upcoming BLUE tour - those pieces are different than these, but still demanding for the Stick player!

There's a new feature here at Millbrook Sound; Paul, the owner, has assembled many of his vintage guitar amp tops in the control room, so guitar players can audition each of them while overdubbing to a track. Very neat... might even replace the toilet paper here as the best feature of the studio! oh oh ... got to get back in there.

I picked up two CD's today. Superior "Behind" Spock's Beard "The Kindness of Strangers"

I like the Superior CD, I've listened to it twice and enjoyed it more the second time around. (This is a good sign I will like it more with each listen) I think most DT fans would be quite pleased with this CD, I sure am.

I just don't get the fuss about Spock's Beard. Most of the music is great and recording is above average, but the lyrics blow. IMHO. To *ME* the singer is boring ...Zzzzz.. When no vocal effects are used he sounds like a teenage Ty Tabor. There is a ton of YES influence at work, but it just doesn't have the same finesse. ( I was listening to YES back when many of you weren't even little sack-swimmers) I will continue to listen to it and see if it clicks. Perhaps I'd love this band if they'd gag the vocalist.

I don't want to bring anyone down, but I wanted to make a post for my close friend - Don Robinson - who died Monday of a severe asthma attack.

Don was a huge Dream Theater fan, and being a drummer he was a major fan of Mike Portnoy. I've included a picture from an important moment with Mike on a memorial site I've created for Don at:

There's no need to start a thread on this, but if you have time please feel free to visit the site.

    >Maybe that's why most of you guys don't appreciate Metallica anymore. I'm having difficulties to understand you right now. Just what do Lars Ulrich and a SOLID 4/4 have in common? Nothing, IMA. But I think that it doesn't matter anyway. I don't now a one single person who has gotten into Metallica because of Lars' playing, so it shouldn't be a reason to turn away from their music.

Yngwie Ptacek: > What would it take to shock you all? It wouldn't be as fun if we knew it, would it?

    >Maybe some really educated jazzers can be converted into prog metal Or maybe they could do some classical music. And rock. Imagine something with rock/prog guitars, some jazz and some of Liszt's nineteenthtuplets. Or, or maybe musicians with classic education could do jazz, or even metal. Yeah, that would kick ass.

Younis Hilal: >>Hmm... >>I've been very bored with the prog scene lately <blah blah> >>Anyone else had this experience? > I think you're just maturing as a listener Well, I think his musical tastes are changing. It happens sometimes. According to your mail you've had the same experience a couple of times. IMA when speaking of such a subjective thing as music it's little weird to say someone's preferences are more mature. Like, have you ever heard yourself saying "I eat more mature food than you do"? And this movement from top40 to metal to prog to prog-metal to prog to fusion to trad. jazz isn't inevitable. As some of my friends I've had the same experience to some extent, but many people haven't. Are they unsuccesful in the quest for The Real Music? Are they incompetent listeners? I'd say no.

    >I suspect that prog will eventually die for most of the ppl on this list. >I figure it's just human nature. Actually i'm amazed/amused by this "now I listen to prog but soon I'll get tired of it and move on to jazz" way of thinking. Maybe I'm exaggerating but this seemed to be the basic idea of your mail.

    >I have heard some KC, and it strikes me as slow, plodding music Have you tried Thrak or Discipline. Outstanding records IMA. They do some insane things, far from boring. And if these do nothing to you, you could try Lizard, great, or Larks' Tongues in Aspic, groovy.

And about this less is more thing, it totally depends on music. What a drummer or any person in any band should do is to play stuff that serves the music. Would you like Metropolis if Portnoy played a constant 4/4 beat over it? Would less be more even then? Since music is subjective matter maybe you would like it. I wouldn't. And saying "play less" isn't the same as "playing simple". If Vinnie Colaiuta played 4/4, eights with hi-hat, bassdrum on first and third, snare on second and fourth and nothing more it still wouldn't be simple. It would be damn groovy. time to move on...

Bafu Vai: >Varttina hails from Finland, but they're nothing like the other >Finnish groups mentioned on this digest... Very true. But not necessarily a positive thing. For those who don't know them (majority of you, I guess) they play Finnish neo-folk music (no, it doesn't have any chromatic runs or fast guitar licks in A minor). Not my cup of wildhoney, but if you like it I can recommend a band called Hedningarna. It has members from at least Finland and Sweden, possibly from other Scandinavian countries and it rocks... umm... folks... well, you know what I mean.

Phil Carter: >Finally, for a more metallic feel, grab up Fates >Warning's "A Pleasant Shade of Gray". Already did :) A great disc.

Joe DeAngelo inquired: >Here's question number TWO: Are the above bands (3rd and the Mortal, In >the Woods, etc.) at all like Therion? >If not, what are they like? Can't say. I haven't heard Therion yet but The 3rd and the Mortal is a great band from Norway. I own their latest (?) CD In This Room and it's "a must have". The music is hard to describe, but it's experimental music with a female vocalist, eerie guitars, ambient-ish synths and samples, loops etc. IMA It's best tracks are So Pure, Stream, Harvest, Did You, Hollow and Sleep. Their earlier CD Painting on Glass is in the same vein. Other releases have more metallic feel and are not as experimental as these. But if you wish to find beautiful, moody music you can't go wrong with this band. In the Woods (also Norwegian) has two records out: Heart of the Ages and Omnio. HotA is heavy, almost black metal (I'm sure Roger would like it) with both clean and shrieking vocals, but it has it's peaceful moments. It's not everyone's cup of tea and it's been ages since I last listened to it because Omnio is much better. Better production, no shrieks, add female vocalist, sorrowful songs and lyrics, less distortion on guitars. Also a must have.

Now I'd like to thank all of you who sent recommendations to me. These CDs that I'm now forced to buy will propably Take Away My Pay for a while. (you don't see a smiley because I don't feel like smiling, and it wasn't very funny, anyway.)

Did I mention that I hate sleet much more than snow? Bye
