Whoa! This is the very first time I've seen Hedningarna mentioned
_anywhere_ near this forum (to be honest, I haven't yet seen anyone who
knows them, save local folk listeners), and I must confess I didn't even
expect to see them mentioned at all. And! I must second what you said.
Hedningarna rocks so much that it can't be described.

Umm... There's a reason the the official site for Dream Theater ISN'T
www.dreamtheater.com. Check it out: Dream Theater is also the name of the
company who did such movies as Meet the Deedles and Starship Troopers.
They specialize in special effects of the digital kind.

So, was this Rosenthal person asked to join while Derek was already a
member? Or, when he says "prior", does he actually mean "many months
    before"?

I remember seeing a post by Mike Bahr (I think) which said that Derek had
considered leaving DT around the time ACOS was due to be recorded . . .

If you're looking for jazzy prog it's nothing new.. UK's self titled release in 78 consisted of Allen Holdsworth, Bruford, John Wetton, and Eddie Jobson all of whom i'm sure we all agree are some of the jazziest and most progressive players ever. UK was orriginally slated to be a King Crimson reunion till Fripp backed out. So Allen Holdsworth joined up. Also, much of what bands like Yes and Frank Zappa did had very jazzy overtones. I guess you just haven't been looking in the right places :)

Oh yeah.. you might have heard of this band too.. they're kinda low key but great prog all the same.. the name's DREAM THEATER, and all the members excluding Kevin James LeBrie studdied at the Berklee School of Music in Boston which is one of the most prestigious jazz schools in the world. needless to say these guys have plenty of classical and jazz oriented training.

so basically the stuff you've been listening to, namely progressive rock, IS jazzy-classical-metal combinations and it DOES kick ass!! :)

    Inferno

    >Maybe some really educated jazzers can be converted into prog metal >Or maybe they could do some classical music. And rock. Imagine >something with rock/prog guitars, some jazz and some of Liszt's >nineteenthtuplets. Or, or maybe musicians with classic education >could do jazz, or even metal. Yeah, that would kick ass.

    Hello People,

What can anyone tell me about The Dixie Dregs? I know that 1) It's 70's instrumental rock and 2) Our good friend Jorden Rudess was on Keyboard Duties.

Does it rock or is it very tame in comparison to LTE and the like?

Also, is Age of Impact very similar to Magellan's style of music. I have bought 2 Magellan CDs and hated them both so I would prefer to sidestep AOI if it's another trip into Trent Gardners Insanity Lair.

    Take Care,

    Rob.

Kevin Rackley was good enough to post the url for the Metal Edge 13th Annual Reader's Choice Awards... had it been left at that, I suspect this would be a non-issue.

However, we then had AnalogGal SCREAMING at us all to "vote for EVERYONE in Dream Theater!", and I take issue with that. No one is going to tell me who to vote for, regardless of what mailing list I'm reading. To assume that we will all mindlessly cast our votes for DT just because we are subscribed to this list, is either very naive, or very arrogant.

    > I mean the whole reason for the list is to support the band, not to say you > should not vote for the > members of the band that this list is all about.

I don't recall *anyone* saying you should NOT vote for the members of Dream Theater, so what is your point?

Is anyone from the Boston (or even better yet Maine) area going to go to this show? I will be up by Bangor, Maine for X-mas and I would like to go to this show but I don't know if I want to drive all the way from Maine to Connecticut. I thought maybe I could bum a ride with someone. Just a thought.

I just saw Hammerfall open for Death last night... I'm not even going to comment on what I thought about these guys because some of you apparrently like them, and I don't want you going off on me. They ought to do something about washing their leather pants though. They definitely stunk bad enough to be noticable through the haze of smoke and "other." A lot of posing for such a small stage. Death put on a great show though. VERY heavy, and VERY cool.

    >"TSM" remarked: >>Once again it's that time of the year when even the idea of songs like >>Innocence Faded makes me want to vomit, so I'm looking for some CDs to >>match my mood and thought that perhaps some people on this list would >>like to help. Bob Culbertson's >solo Chapman Stick release "Cafe San Francisco" has a very jazzy, bluesy >feel to it. Also, Joe Satriani's self-titled release is strongly jazz- and >blues-influenced.

Phil, I like the discs you mentioned, but I wouldn't consider any of them to be really jazz. Cook is a latin new age guitarist, not entirely unlike that Otmar guy, but he's much more interesting. He claims to have studied flamenco, but I'm almost POSITIVE he's using a plectrum. Satch's disc is more groove and funk and blues... there's nothing jazzy in it. My recommendations for rocker friendly jazz: Jimmy Bruno, Live at Birdieland; Anything by Tribal Tech OR Greg Howe (no, Howe is not in Tribal Tech), Bright Size Life or We Live Here by Metheny; Any of the Shawn Lane Jonas Hellborg collaborations; Heavy Machinery with Holdsworth and the mighty Jens and Anders, or Jens' disc "Fission."

Those are all fusion/jazz. If you want some real bossa type stuff, you're gonna want some "cool jazz" or something bebop. Write me and I'll recommend some sides.

    Hi again

Brad Plump: >Classical composers also had a lot more to work with than 5 instruments. >Think on that. So how does this change the fact that it's more complex than prog? I don't suggest that it'd mean better, but if there are some people who feel that music has to be as complex as possible in order to sound good they're on the wrong list.

O: >>>C. Ptacek: >>>...it feels like Prog is stagnating. >>Y. Hilal: >>I suspect that prog will eventually die for most of the >>ppl on this list. I figure it's just human nature. >Those were wise words. And perhaps you're both right. >Even though prog, according to me, has one of the widest spectres >and encourages more experimental solutions to arrangements, techniques >and songwriting, the genre will be overfed some day - if it isn't gone >that way already. Are you suggesting that prog will fade away and die? If this is the case then why hasn't pop-music vanished from the face of earth? Why there are bands like Oasis ripping off The Beatles and Bowie etc.? Euro/techno-pop is still going on wrong and strong. And what about jazz? And Classical music? Don't expect them to be some kind of endless source of musical inspiration. There's much repetition in these genres, too. I think that prog will stay but it must go through changes just like jazz and classical music have done. At the moment I feel that bands like Echolyn and Deus Ex Machina are bringing something refreshing (not pepsi) into prog.

    >look at FII, it certainly gives a new breeze to the movement of DT. To DT yes, to music in general there isn't anything really new. They are mixing up various influences in a neat way, but they don't bring out anything that i.e. Floyd, Sting, Metallica and DT themselves haven't done before. Not that I care. It get's more time in my player than I&W, LatM and WDADU altogether. Still hasn't beat Awake or ACOS, though.

Al: > I just don't get the fuss about Spock's Beard. >Most of the music is great and recording is above average, >but the lyrics blow. IMHO. Yeah. Opinions blow, don't they? I think that the lyrics are great and so are neal's vocals. The Kindness of Strangers has so "positive vibes" that it will always cheer me up when I'm down. But it took me some time to really get into SB. It wasn't what I expected it to be so I was dissapointed at first. After a week or so when I had nothing else to listen I threw that bugger into CD-player and it started kicking. Hard. At that point there was nothing I could do. The bastard got me, as it will get you eventually. You can run but you can't hide...

hey << You can pick a random piece by Bach and be about 90% sure that it's more complex than any prog composition that's ever been written.>> =20

I don=B4t agree. Just picking a few tunes from Anglagard King crimson or gentle giant only to name a few tunes you can get the same structures. You know, prog musicians studied the same things Bach or even any erudite composer studied.HArmony, counterpoint, arrangements, rhythms, etc.

The point is some people might consider classical or erudite music as something they like more, but they could not say they like because it=B4s more complex, because it=B4s not.

Classical composers can be more polyphonical of course, but I=B4m sure if they lived in our days they=B4d be playing music with electric and electronic devices.

    My opinion you know :)
