Well according the title it's obvious that the new tracks will be The
    Leftovers (4 songs I think) :)

Does anyone knows what will be the prize of this a-la Zappa piece of
    art?!?

I was reffering to Phil drumming. And about THAT, Brand X is pretty good
    comparison.

    There, I knew I was right! ;)

Errr...well now, I don't know what Brand X stuff you heard, but I have
all and I think they're pretty busy note-wise. Maybe not to the extent
of Metropolis solo but... who says that's the established definition of
    busy note-wise stuff anyway?
And it's not the point to measure WHO's doing more notes and rhythm
    changes per second.
Whatever, "Nuclear Burns" or "Disco Suicide" are 2 awesome songs, at it
will remain as such even if someone beat Mr. Portnoy or Petrucci in busy
    note-wise stuff! :)

Agreed! Woohoo, Moby Dick rules!!! :)

I have a Kurzweil K2000 keyboard and trying to get the best "prog" sounds
for it. I already have the B3 and Mellotron sounds. But I was wondering if
any keyboardists on the list can help me figure out how to get the "Korg"
type Kevin Moore and Derek type sounds. Anybody know any good CD-Roms?

Also, I have a bunch of Kurzweil CDs, and a few Akai CDs. If anyone is
interested, I would love to hear from keyboard players interested in trading
sounds, patches, and CDs. Please email me at bvaughn@snowhill.com and I'll
send you a list of what I have.

    Thanks for any advice,

    icq queen,
I gotta tell ya, you're the first person ever to assosiate "Inferno"
with Dante, which was my inspiration for the handle back when i read it
in the 8th grade!!!.. very intuitive of you... everyone else just thinks

Hmmm. I was quite pleasantly suprised when I found out that at least three

Brett Rodler (drums), Chris Rodler (guitar, bass, keys) and
    Melissa Blair (vocals)

This is the debut CD from ex-Drama members Chris and Brett Rodler,
together with the excellent female vocalist Melissa Blair. Chris
and Brett are doing the music while Melissa is writing the lyrics.

This is highly technical progressive rock/metal that certainly
will please fans of Dream Theater, Jethro Tull, King Crimson,
Marillion, Rush and UK, as it's very complex and intricate with
    many mood shifts.

Although every track is almost equally good, the track "Enter
Quietly" stands out a little bit more with its 19:50 minutes. On
this track the musicians get a good chance to really show off.

I would like to recommend this CD as it contains some of the best
progressive music I've heard recently with excellent musicianship
    throughout the entire album.

Leger de Main have recently released their second CD entitled
"Second First Impression", that is said to me equally good to "The
    Concept of Reality".

I'd like to thank Younis, for reposting what I've said. I really
wish this Echosilence band got some more airplay, because I think that
they deserve their place in the sun.

    > This sounds pretty interesting to me. Could somebody suggest some bands
    > in this jazz-metal vein to me. Preferably ones with clean vocals though

Yes, Joe, if you have problems with the death vocals, then you
might have some problems with Cynic (the vocals on "Focus", which btw is
their only album, aren't only death metalish -- there are some
"electronic" vocals, and some female vocals).

I'm not sure if those electronic vocals were generated through a
vox box (as I've been told), but, IMO, they were the hardest part to get
past when I listened to Cynic (I really didn't have any problems with
death metal vocals, because I'm more or less used to them).

Ok. Enough comments on Cynic. I'll be putting some reviews on my
homepage when I'm on holidays and Cynic's "Focus" will be one of these.

Now, if you'd like to experience some jazz-metal without death
metal vocals, then you should really get the 4 MP3 files from Echosilence.
"Why?", I hear you cry in despair.

Well, first, it's really a band fusing some interesting metal with
some elements from jazz (and the drumming isn't your constant, boring
    double bass).

Second, all the tracks are instrumental (if you ignore some
samples on one of the songs) and there are no vocals to worry about. The
    guitar does the "vocal" lines.

Third and perhaps the more interesting information is that this is
the "demo tape" of the band, so this is your opportunity of hearing what
they sound like without the hand of a producer, changing the mind of the
artists. It contains their ideas as it was meant to be. And, of course,
the demo was released to the Internet (which is not very common, IMO).
    (The ULR is: <http://www.estnet.ee/karu/cgi-bin/echoindex.cgi>).

I hope that these comments make you at least a bit interested in
what this new band is producing, since they deserve to be signed by a
lable (perhaps, by Candlelight Records, which is a label that gives their
artists enough creative freedom -- but I don't know if they're only a
    death/black metal kind of label).

            Hope this helps, Roger...

Well, Therion's "Theli" is very good, IMO. The production isn't very good, but they guys didn't have much money -- so it's the best that was possible.

BTW, thank you Ernesto Schnack for getting me into Therion.

BTW #2, isn't it weird that Dan Swano's name is in almost every album of a band that's related to death metal? > > Here's question number TWO: Are the above bands (3rd and the Mortal, In > the Woods, etc.) at all like Therion? > If not, what are they like?

I don't know anything about The Third and the Mortal, besides the songs present on their site, but one of them is interesting and the other one is just ok, IMO.

Reviews on their albums are welcome, from anybody knowledgeable about this band.

    And the address is: <http://www.nvg.unit.no/~thomasr/mortal/>.

    > NP: Metallica "Am I Evil?" from Garage Inc. :-D

Is it out yet? Reviews, please? Perhaps on some homepage, to avoid the nasty things that might happen if Metallica gets mentioned here again...

=09Haha! I thought that this was pretty funny to see on the GG list, just after the thread on "stagnation" of progressive music appearing there. Obviously, the comments were made about progressive rock, but they also apply to progressive metal. :-)

    =09Have fun, Roger...

I hadn't seen this come around this way yet, but I'm sure many of you may even s*bscribe to that particular newsgroup. Passed on to me by another prog head in Sweden (I know his dad is a big GG fan), Nils Erichson. Z-man

    Bullseye! A great laugh!

    Hello all--

Just a list of progressive rock clich=E9s. I've tried to have some sort of conceptual continuity in the groupings (hell, it's about *prog*, isn't it?). Feel free to add to the list:

Any of the following sound-effects: a) Ocean waves, often accompanied by seagulls and foghorns. b) City street sounds, with lots of car-horns honking. c) Music box. d) Rushing water. e) Wind whispering through trees. f) Birdsongs, often accompanied by d) and/or e) g) Whale songs. h) Church bells i) Train whistles. j) Raspy, incomprehensible two-way radio voices. k) Fake record pops, clicks or scratches. 3. Songs beginning with bright, major or major 7th chords played on a (Hammond) organ, or sometimes with suspended 2nds or 4ths resolving to the tonic. 4. Otherwise "acoustic" ballads where the organ, polysynth and/or Mellotron make their sole appearance in the "dramatic" final verse. 5. Same as 4. but with electric guitar fills and a solo coda in the "dramatic" final verse. 6. Rototom fills. 7. A sudden quiet section featuring just a loud synth glissando. 8. Descending fretless-bass glissandi. 9. Ascending violin glissandi. 10. A short, string-quartet intermezzo. 11. The short, "humourous" piece either just before or just after the big "epic". 12. Drum solos. Anywhere. 13. Superfluous bass pedals in bands with a fully functioning bass player who plays no instruments other than bass. 14. A clavinet which only appears during the "funky" bit. 15. A clavinet used as a substitute for a harpsichord. 16. A cheap electronic piano used as a substitute for a harpsichord. 17. A brief, fake baroque section, usually with strings and harpsichord (or 15. Or 16.) 18. Synth warbles used for "spacy" effects. 19. Singers affecting English accents. 20. Singers affecting Irish (or other Celtic) accents.
