I doubt that's very likely, as DT has neither the prominence nor the substance
    abuse for that show. :)

This list was also posted to rec.music.progressive, and sparked a debate about, of all things, Pink Floyd sound effects. However, I think there should be one more cliche added: "Selling out the decade after you gained your highest popularity." See Yes, Genesis, and Jethro Tull to a certain extent (though they got it back in the late 80's). King Crimson seemed to avoid this, amazingly enough. Probably because they took a break for 6 or 7 years.

It annoys me when people get pissy about putting bands into categories. Why? Well, first off, there aren't many of you who would hesitate to call DTone of your favorite "Prog Metal Bands" including the dude who responded to my post. Second, whether we want to be pretentious or not about calling our music "art" and defying qualifications that would be used to stifle our pure form of expression or not, it's convenient to be able to describe a band in a short term rather than sit here and say "It's a band with 3 musicians, one who plays a 7 string archtop, one who plays an upright bass, and one of whom plays the drums. The music is a mix between old songs written when your grandma was a kid and new songs inspired by some of the structures of the old songs. The songs vary in complexity, with regards to the difficulty of the melody, the speed, the number of key changes, etc..." What I typed there is STILL not enough to fully classify it as jazz. Did anyone enjoy reading that? You don't have any reason to put that much effort in in describing something. The only reason I commented when Phil posted is because there are some elements that are generally attributed to jazz, and there is a misuse of the word "jazz" by many people, to describe some types of music. Jazz is an American artform that can be traced without much effort back to it's roots. Because of this, even an ameteur like myself can classify things into different subsections of jazz accurately. You don't need a doctorate or even a class on jazz history. I didn't do it to be bitchy or anything. Nothing to get one's panties in a bunch.

Wow, Mike Portnoy broke cardinal rule number 2 of the ytsejam, about posting in html or mime. Damn. Mike, just kidding. Had to bust chops. Anybody going to the Birch Hill, Phillie or Irving plaza show, or all three and want another partner? I highly doubt I will get anybody to go with here. OK, I am a firm believer that the only way a human can get the Derek or Kevin sounds is to get their gear, and even then, programming as wide as they do may be tough. The only stock wsound I know that derek uses on the Trinity is his solo sound for songs like BMS or TOT. That's it. The guitars sound tweaked along with everything else. i would urge anybody who is playing progressive music to try to develope his own unique sounds as opposed to ripping other's sounds off. I need to learn this myself. It is nice to have Rick Wakeman's keyboard sounds, but in addition to all this, try to develope your own sound or your own style so that you don't sound like a wanna-be. BTW, I would take the author of this post up on some Akai cd trades, but I don't have anything useful not even a cdrom for the synth yet. At 02:46 PM 11/25/1998 -0800, you wrote: I have a Kurzweil K2000 keyboard and trying to get the best "prog" sounds for it. I already have the B3 and Mellotron sounds. But I was wondering if any keyboardists on the list can help me figure out how to get the "Korg" type Kevin Moore and Derek type sounds. Anybody know any good CD-Roms? Also, I have a bunch of Kurzweil CDs, and a few Akai CDs. If anyone is interested, I would love to hear from keyboard players interested in trading sounds, patches, and CDs. Please email me at bvaughn@snowhill.com and I'll send you a list of what I have. Thanks for any advice, Brandon Vaughn bvaughn@snowhill.com

    >Hm, something is bothering me quite a while. WHY so many folks say that >classical music is the top goal for everyone developing in listening >music? WHY classical music is considered BEST music of all? Did I say that classical music was superior to any other music? IMA there is no good or bad music. Only music that appeals to you. I myself like some classical music but don't really listen to it. Still I can't deny that if you have an orchestra with players who have practised for all their lives you can make some pretty friggin' complex things. Ones you can never do with a typical five piece rockband. It doesn't in any way mean it would be better than Dream Theater, Tribal Tech or even Green Day. IT IS MORE COMPLEX, NOT BETTER. But in a different way than i.e. fusion is complex.

    >It kinda confuses me: These guys were writing that music centuries ago >and today they are considered geniuses in music! I don't say Beethoven >or Bach are not geniuses, but going to the extreme of saying THEY are >the best??? We can't possibly say that EVERYTHING after them is garbage >ad composer after them are all idiots. Geniuses they were, but the best? Nope, never said anything like that. Don't try to put words in my mouth. Maybe you should reread my mail. Anyway, maybe you weren't referring to me when you wrote this mail, but were just making a complaint in general. Then I'll apologise. Otherwise I won't.

    >Is is that we come again to the point "My music is the best music"? >So? No.

About these CD-Rom copies, I think it has gone way over the line. In the music business there are legal copies, pirate copies and bootlegs. Legal copies obviously are The Good, cause the artists and record companies have certain rights to their material. Bootlegs are in the gray area. The bootleggers are usually die-hard fans who distribute stuff that otherwise would never be heard. But the artists don't get any profit from these records and they can't decide what stuff comes out on a bootleg, so boots are The Ugly. Pirate copies are The Bad. People who do pirate copies have no respect at all for the artists or their rights. They're in it only for the money. No matter what you do you can't justify the making, or buying of these things, because it's pure stealing and nothing more. Period.

I have been getting into more jazz influenced music too, like many of the recent posts I've seen. There is a whole style of jazz dedicated to this, called Fusion. From what I here, it happened in the 70's. Jazz players started incorperating rock, and rock players incorporating jazz. The result was very similar to Progressive Rock. Some of my favorites are The Dregs, Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Jon Finn Group, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, and Jaco. These bands have all inroduced me to new areas of music. In NJ there's a cool station, 90.5 WBJB, that plays a lot of this stuff. Any other cool Jazz-Prog bands out there I should check out?

    Hey everyone,

I have made plans to road trip it to ALL the shows that DT will be putting on from 12/26 - 12/30. And, I will be recording all the shows as well and putting them onto CD. And, I want to do a tape/CD-tree with these shows.

Now, here's the deal. I want this to be very organized so that it will be very easy for someone to get any show they want. So, I am looking for about 25 people who have the capabilities to duplicate CDs. (aka - you have a CD-R and some hard drive space.)

If you are interested in being a branch, let me know. I will try to pick a list of 25 people that are spread out geographically so that no overseas mailing has to be done. This will ensure fewer problems with lost packages, etc., etc.

Anyways, I'll post more about how the tree will work once I get a list of people set up. I'd write about it now, but the family is bugging me to socialize a little bit, etc.

Take care and Happy Thanksgiving! Bogie

Hi all, I'm getting bored with all this "less is more, no it isn't, yes it is" rubbish! You're all right - sometimes it is, sometimes it just isn't. But since when has Neil Peart's thoughts on the subject been Bible? Anyway, my top 5 guitarists, based on creativity, chops ( and refraining from using 'em where appropriate ), "The jaw-drop factor" that they possess ( very scientific measurement, this. Took weeks. Honest, mum. ), and possibly influence. This is "Ever...", by the way. 5. Eddie van Halen ( face it, he invented modern rock guitar ) 4. Joe Satriani ( 'cos whatever EVH forgot, Satch didn't ) 3. Jimmy Page ( ...I mean, where do you begin? ) 2. John Petrucci ( the perfect mix of 5, 4, and 1 ) 1. David Gilmour ( the sound...the phrasing...the material...)

Rank outsiders: Fripp, Hendrix, Iommi, Morse. NOT rank outsiders: Anyone remotely associated with Korn. Alex Lifeson ( languishing somewhere below Noel fucking Gallagher ). Steve bloody Vai ( huge speed and great playing do not a good guitarist make - see below ). And worst of all: Malmsteen - at least Vai wrote a classic like For the Love Of God. While I'm here: I'd just like to diss "Under A Glass Moon". IT'S FUCKING LOUSY, YOU DAFT BUGGERS!!!!!!!!! It's the weakest track DT have ever produced. It sounds spasmodically disjointed, especially when placed between two standout tracks. Best Petrucci solos? Voices. Lie. Peruvian Skies. Lines in the Sand. Oh, and ACoS 5. I could go on - they're all ace. EXCEPT THAT ONE!!! STOP IT!! Bye for now,

    Gaffer
