<< However, we then had AnalogGal SCREAMING at us all to "vote for EVERYONE
in Dream Theater!", and I take issue with that. No one is going to tell
me who to vote for, regardless of what mailing list I'm reading. >>

First off, no one was screaming. I was simply trying to sound excited, and I
hoped to pass that mood onto others in order to encourage them to vote.
Secondly, no one was telling you who to vote for. I mean, a large number of
people here are DT fans and I figured they'd be interested. Third, vote for
whomever you wish -- or don't vote at all. The whole point of the post was to
get people interested in something that might be fun, and since DT is really
the only prog band that Metal Edge covers, I'd like to see them continue to be
featured in that magazine as much as possible. Plus, it would be pretty cool
to see a REAL BAND win once in a while. It doesn't make them richer; it
doesn't make them better musicians. It's just fun.

So, for those of you who are still interested, take some time and visit Metal
Edge Online and cast your votes. Enjoy and have fun!

one don't have to be that open-minded to get into it, since the music is

Every once in a while I get a catalog from Museum Replicas Limited. It's you typical swords and armor catalog... But the most recent one had a small section in the back devoted to fantasy...and they had crafted some of the weapons featured in the WoT series! Things like Padan Fain's dagger, Perrin's Axe, the Seanchan sword, and of course the blademaster sword complete with the heron mark. I thought it was really cool to see a real replica...kinda like when they make movies out of books you read. Anyway, thought I'd share.

Simon John Dodd thus sputtered forthly:

    > I'm getting bored with all this "less is more, no it isn't, > yes it is" rubbish! You're all right - sometimes it is, sometimes it > just isn't. But since when has Neil Peart's thoughts on the subject > been Bible?

I've mentioned this before, I'm sure.... But ya ever notice how people add to threads and begin their posts with, "I'm bored to death with this thread of la la la, but what I believe is....so let's leave it at that..." ? Just an observation....

Then he threw his balls onto the chopping block with a top 5 list:

    > 5. Eddie van Halen ( face it, he invented modern rock guitar ) > 4. Joe Satriani ( 'cos whatever EVH forgot, Satch didn't ) > 3. Jimmy Page ( ...I mean, where do you begin? ) > 2. John Petrucci ( the perfect mix of 5, 4, and 1 ) > 1. David Gilmour ( the sound...the phrasing...the material...)

To each their own...I agree somewhat with the Van Halen comment but I believe Hendrix had just as many trailblazing credentials in the shaping of modern rock guitar. Satriani's just from another planet. Plain 'n simple. He was the soul survivor of an alien spaceship crash in a remote forest just outside of Los Angeles when a gang of gay bikers were having a picnic and discovered him among the wreckage. They taught him the ancient biker techniques of headbutting, hiding in shadows, and humility, but most importantly, how to control the force of the in-between side. Satch soon grew up to realize what exactly their weekly "wrestling" matches entailed, became unsatisfied living as a member of the gang and as soon as he found out that Santa Clause wasn't really a biker, he took his light sab..er...guitar with him to the city just as the evil Republican Empire sent storm troopers disguised as members of the Christian Coalition and Jahova's Witnesses to burn the gang's biker bar into the ground.

And that's all I got to say about that. > Rank outsiders: Fripp, Hendrix, Iommi, Morse. > NOT rank outsiders: Anyone remotely associated with Korn. Alex > Lifeson ( languishing somewhere below Noel fucking Gallagher ). Steve > bloody Vai ( huge speed and great playing do not a good guitarist > make - see below ). And worst of all: Malmsteen - at least Vai wrote > a classic like For the Love Of God.

Heheheh, funny you grouped Korn with Steve Vai. You didn't pick up a copy of the 7th Heaven video by any chance didjya?

But since you dissed the great Shreddi Master Vai, I must kill you. Vai's admitted he's not the fastest player in the world, and I've seen some faster players I'll admit, but he's not concerned with speed, he's concerned with note value more than anything, keeping a consistency in the songs themselves, and adding his own pinache to what many many young or lower shreddi knights would be playing simple scalar patterns. He's constantly improving, constantly producing, and constantly kicking my ass everytime I spin Fire Garden and Alien Love Secrets in the stereo. If a constant improvement and incredible creative output and a great personality don't make a great guitar player...WHAT THE HELL DOES? The dude even has the poses down for god's sake! AND HE HAS LONG (well, in comparison to Satch or James Hetfield) HAIR!

    > While I'm here: I'd just like to diss "Under A Glass Moon". IT'S > FUCKING LOUSY, YOU DAFT BUGGERS!!!!!!!!! It's the weakest track DT > have ever produced. It sounds spasmodically disjointed, especially > when placed between two standout tracks. Best Petrucci solos? Voices. > Lie. Peruvian Skies. Lines in the Sand. Oh, and ACoS 5. I could go on > - they're all ace. EXCEPT THAT ONE!!! STOP IT!!

Yer right on the second count. Our good buddy from White Zombie, yes, that lovable, huggable little hell hound himself, Rob Zombie was the "musical consultant" for the Q2 staff. I know for sure it was him who did that little intro scene music where the marine's flying around like an Arizona driver in a spaceship, but i'm not really sure who composed the actual game music. It might be Rob himself on that too. *shrug* > Hehe... one time I had Eric Johnson's "Venus Isle" in the cd drive when I > started playing Quake. i've come to the conclusion that it's time for me to bid you a farewell for now. it's nothing personal, but with possibly the worst finals' season in my life coming up in 2 weeks, and with my lack of participation, it's time i jetted.

not to say i haven't learned anything about the band i more or less matured to (maturity is debatable, of course). and not just about dt- about several other issues. i'll always be appreciative of that.

i'll also always be appreciative of the freaks i've made friends with over the 3800 or so ytsejams i've been around for- some still here, and some not. and if i'm lucky, i'll be in touch with them. in no order, mad phat props to bitches like partha, metzger (hugh g. erection), mojo, cahill, wisha, airdance, ekim, jeff chew, deb seeger, coldfire, bracken (where the fuck did HE go?), syrinx, ytsejim, bafu, d-man, g. jack, rick terry, ibanez.....i know there's a bunch of names that aren't popping in my head at this moment, but i'm tired and fried. you know who y'all are.

alright, so that's that. y'all know my email if you care. continued success. it's bitches like all of us who keep a band like dt from being ignored completely.

(and about 45 other records he broke here at UT) we held the aggies to 3 first downs and 49 yards in the first half! We remained undefeated at home this season. that was, without a doubt, the best football game I've ever been to, and everyone be sure to watch the highlights this week to see Ricky's record-breaking touchdown run. I went shopping today for a new "high-end" CD player. I found the player of my dreams, problem is, it cost a fucking fortune. I brought the warden with me... Was that a mistake? I don't know, maybe. She gave me the seal of approval.... along with a slightly dirty look. She said "Before you drop $4,500.00 on a fucking CD player, I want my bathroom remodeled." (All in ceramic) Don't you just hate these trade offs? Now all I need is the cash.

If anyone here is interested in a little peek at the Progtologist's dream machine here is the Wadia 850: http://www.wadia.com/products/w850/w850phfr.html Or read a review at: http://www.wadia.com/products/w850/w850fi.html This machine is one of Wadia's mid-level units, but the sound is wonderful. I listened to it connected directly to a pair of Bryston 7B-ST mono-blocks feeding a pair of Magnapan MG 3.5's. (planar magnetic speakers) I have wet-dreams about replacing my California Audio Labs "Tercet" with this Wadia offering. I am open to accepting donations. :)

I've had a little more time to listen to Spock's Beard & Superior this week. I retract my statement about the SB recording being above average. When I first listened to it I was using the little system in our living room. That system consists of a Dynaco tube preamp & amp, a top shelf Technics CD player (Yuk) and a pair of Polk Audio speakers. I don't listen to that system much, the warden does. So my first impressions were false. After listening to SB's KoS several times on the "BIG" system in Al's little playhouse <grin> I think the recording is thin and lifeless. Some of the music is growing on me, I really like "Flow." But the damn recording annoys me. Any comments?

On to Superior... I like this CD. (Behind) The entire CD is great and I plan on looking into other Superior CD's. The recording is well above average for a Prog/Prog-Metal/Rock recording. The guitars could use a warmer tone though. They sound a little dry and analytical, I don't know who to blame, the band or the recording engineer. How about it Bernd, any comments? Great work guys!

Yeah now your talking, 'Behind' is a classic in my book, lots of great songs, heavy on the 'balls'n'chunk'. The follow up 'YOUique' is quite different, to be honest I think the change in style was a bit too drastic jump from the sound of 'Behind'. Still has some great songs but IMO not quite in the same class as the debut :)
