Yeah, he did the music for Quake I, Rob Zombie did one track off of Quake
II, while the other tracks were done by the band mentioned a while ago...

Why is the absolute subjectivity of aesthetic value always the
starting point for any conversation about it? It seems to have achieved
the same axiomatic status as "I exist" or something. Objectivity in
aesthetics is no more odd than objectivity in ethics. Of course, most
people will retort that that is a crock as well, but they almost always
recant when they realize that such a view makes Hitler and Mother
Theresa play on the same ground. Such wildly subjective and nihilistic
views are simply counterintuitive, and they don't jive with the way that
we speak of ethics and aesthetics. Value-talk is just the same as
normal talk, and, therefore, the onus of proof is on the subjectivist.
People are all to ready to embrace subjectivism of all sorts because
society is still dealing with the horrors of racial discrimination and
what-not, and that, of course, was partly due to a misplaced sense of
superiority, but the badness of certain values does not entail the
badness of values altogether, and it should not be considered the
    beginning ground for any discussion.

Regarding the poll, when I visited the site

    www.mtledge.com/13reader98.htm

the form said that 1998 releases only can be voted for. Since Dream Theater
released FII in 1997 this presumably doesn't count and would disqualify the
    vote .

I suppose then we who WANT to vote DT should vote for OiaLT, which means we
can also pick any SONG from that release, giving plenty of scope. Clever old
    DT eh?

Thing is, I haven't really been to see any films this year so I don't know
what to vote for in the film soundtrack category. Any good ideas?

    Thanks

With all the talk of Jazz/Prog/Rock lately, I was listening to one of my
favorite Jazz bands the other day, Medeski, Martin and Wood, and I was
thinking about where to draw the line between Jazz and Prog. Some jazz has so
many of the characteristics of good progressive music (complex beats,
intricate instrument playing). Where do you guys draw the line between Prog
and Jazz? What groups cross that line every once in a while (either way)?

BTW, I will be meeting the band (MMW) at a local record store on the 7th and
getting a signed copy of their latest album...

I thought it was Trent Reznor of NIN. Either way, both Rob Zombie and
Reznor kick ass when the mood strikes. I know Reznor did one of the
    quakes, just not which one.

Oops... my bad! I was under the impression that the CD's were available at Powermad and that people could leave with copies. I didn't know it was an order thang. Sorry 'bout that. But, if anyone ever DOES get a copy, I'll be looking forward to a review/track listing. Thanks...

    Hi my jamming amigos,

My point of the whole poll thing is that you are in this list to celebrate DT and promote it. Not to say somebody arrogant to think we should vote for Dream Theater. What are we supposed to say... vote for Hanson? Do you walk into the republican party and say "vote for Clinton"?

Anybody who thinks that on the DREAM THEATER MAILING LIST should not say vote for DT because nobody should interfere with your right to vote is taking this too seriously.

Paganini actually wrote about 150 caprices for guitar as well. The story as I know it is that he dated a woman who was a guitarist, so he learned to play guitar so that he could play guitar duets with her. After he broke up with her he never played guitar again :0 One of the caprices was adapted (or so I'm told) to "Eugene's bag of tricks" by Steve Vai from the movie Crossroads (Ralph Macchio's character plays it in the movie at the end).

    And wasn't Paganini 18th or 19th Century?

Me thinks I might be checking out Greg Howe after hearing him do the bass and a coupla guitar lines on a CD i just got from an Indian (Berklee trained, but we all know what that means...or doesn't mean....anyway) guitarist named Prashant Aswani.....

that disc I had to pick up cuz "Indian" and "guitar" aren't words i'd usually associate, and it is pretty darned cool, the style is the heavy fusion style, jazz metal maybe, i don't know exactly what the term is.....

but howe does the bass and production duties, and his parts are decent enough to make me think if he's good on bass, how cool is he gonna be on his primary instrument?? so a greg howe purchase may be in my future........

as for La Villa Strangiato......anyone here have the "Building Rome" CD from the band Mercury Rising? good disc, some great music, good enough to overcome the iffy vocalist (he gets a bit atonal a few times too many for my tastes).....sounds like fates warning on a few spots, but are able to turn the power up a notch for a heavier, chunkier edge than FW in their "metal" days......also has a lot of Rush influence, my brother the rap fan even picked up on that (hey, maybe the kid has learned something from all these years of being around me after all!)....the rush influence is pretty much spelled out in bringht lights the size of the letters in the Hollywood hills when in the middle of the first track, they start playing La Villa Strangiato (it's not exactly LVS, but you KNOW what they're getting at)......cool 'tribute' of sorts......a disc worth getting, all in all
