    Hey guys...

I've heard a few mentions of Superior's new CD YOUnique and I'm
wondering if it's been out for awhile or what? My supplier basically
said it should be out/available the end of September (now) but maybe
it's been out earlier? Oh well. I'll get my grubby little hands on it
    soon enough.

Any reactions? Comparisons to "Behind"? If this has been discussed on
the jam already, feel free to send a personal e-mail to me.

I've heard, also, that the new Angra CD isn't up to par with their last
    two. Anybody agree/disagree?

What's the latest on the new one by Lemur Voice? Last I heard it was
being hung up due to their label, Magna Carta. Have they switched
labels? Any tentative date on the release of the new one? Do we have a
    name for it yet?

Finally, I'm going on record as saying that although I love Dream
Theater with all my heart, as of today my favorite band has to be
Symphony X. It is so apparent to me that the direction Symphony X has
been chosen completely by themselves and not by outside influences such
as producers and demands of the public. They're churning out their own
style of Progressive Metal and nobody's going to stop them!

On the other hand, I'm getting the impression that the members of Dream
Theater aren't in agreement anymore as to what Dream Theater is to
become. The highly technical and overly progressive side of the band
(Portnoy and to some extent Petrucci) feel they need the Liquid Tension
Experiment to fully realize their talent because their present band
isn't allowing them to. Meanwhile the lighter side of Dream Theater
(James) seems to feel that this band has great potential for making hits
left and right and feels their songs should be more radio-friendly and
more accessible to the palate of the average person's ear. Boy, what a
    dorky sentence that was! ;)

I also get the impression that making FII was a "compromise." "First,
we can put out this album full of ballads and catchy tunes and then we
can put out a technical album (after the live album) filled with songs
in the vein (and including) Metropolis Part II."

PLEASE don't flame me because of what I've written here. The above
statements are merely my impressions of what's going on in the band and
who might be responsible for it. I have few (if any) facts to back up
what I've said and I'm not trying to act like I have the "inside scoop"
as to what Dream Theater is thinking. I just thought I'd put my
thoughts out there to see if anybody concurs or disagrees.

    Please feel free to respond!

                         - Dr. Teeth (One biased Mo-Fo, that's for sure!)

    Hi all,

Anthony here, long time reader first time poster, actually I lie I've
only been reading for the last couple of weeks. Received a couple of
goodies from my flatmate who works at EastWest Records here in London.
I met him after work as we were going to the Terry Bozzio clinic in
Reading and he says to me, "I've got a couple of goodies from States
side." He pulls out 4 tapes - direct from master copies of DT's "Once
in a Livetime"(1 tape) and the new Rush "Live" album(3 tapes) on chrome
tape. He only had the 2nd CD on tape so that was all I heard, hopefully
he'll get the first CD on tape tonight. Anyway I'll give a track
listing of the 2nd CD as was listed on the tape:-

    A
    1. Trail of Tears
    2. Hollow Years
    2. Take Away my Pain
    4. Caught in a Web
    5. Lie
    B
    1. Peruvian Skies
    2. Guitar Solo
    3. Pull Me Under
    4. Metropolis
    5. Learning to live
    6. A Change of Seasons VII

I only listened to the tape once, well parts of it anyway, as it was
12.30am when we arrived back from the Bozzio clinic, which was pretty
good btw.(I had a chance to see him in Melbourne about a year ago and he
just blew me away. That Swiss Triplet thingy he does. Unbelievable. I
think he's one of the few who can give a dissertation on drumming as in
terms of rocket science, but then again he did play with Zappa).

(I've only listened to this once and it was late) It's extremely well
recorded(as one would expect) the sound is pretty much crystal clear so
you really can't fault that at all. The mix is good, though I couldn't
really here a lot of bass esp. in the guitar solo(joking!). John P's
sound is very good and definitely seems a lot ballsier and chunkier than
I've heard on other live recordings. This is very noticeable on Lie and
esp. Pull Me Under. (I should have a listen again before I say anything
too rash but...) this version of PMU has to be one of the best I have
ever heard. They seem to have really captured that "chunky ballsy" feel
that I first heard on Images and Words. Mike P and John M seem to be a
little bit too far back in the mix for my liking. A little more bottom
end would have been nice. Would have been nice to here a little more
drums(esp. bass drums) and bass in the mix. But as I said I only
    listened to it once.

I had the chance to see DT at the Forum here in London in June. It was
the first time I had seen them live(as they had never toured Australia,
though I did work on Mike Portnoy's clinic when he came over). I
enjoyed the show, but I felt I would have much preferred to have seen
them when they were touring on Images or Awake. A friend I worked with
in Sydney actually had the chance to see them on the last night of the
Images tour in New York at NAMM a few years back so I was jacked I
wasn't there. I haven't picked up FII as of yet. I have had a brief
listen and it didn't really grab me. The new songs didn't do much for
me(though I'm not too familiar with them) but from what I remember the
set they played at the Forum is quite similar to what's on the new live
album. They had the album gatefold pics taken at that show.

First side. I listened to Trail to get a feel for the sound etc. I only
listened briefly to, fast forwarding through Hollow and Take Away(there
is a sax solo in there). I don't actually have FII, but as I said I
have only heard it a couple of times and it didn't really grab me like
their other albums. CIAW and Lie are pretty well done. They throw in
Metallica's "Enter Sandman" in there at the end somewhere. James voice
is in good form. The production is crystal clear. Very clean sound
    overall.

Second side. I was keen to listen to this side more so than the first.
Peruvian Skies, again not too familiar with the material from FII, so
wasn't that memorable. The guitar solo is pretty phenomenal, again the
same solo he did at the Forum show. John P goes nuts. Solo goes into
Pull Me Under. As I said above this live version of PMU is one of the
best I've heard. Chunky. The Encore is that medley of Metropolis,
Learning to Live and A Change of Seasons VII. The French crowd is
chanting "ME-TROP-O-LIS" over and over and then the DAT comes in with
the intro and the encore begins. The medley is well done though I would
have preferred to have heard the original full length versions, but I
guess that's just not going to happen. Oh well. Anyway I'm going to
have a proper listen tonight and hopefully I'll have the first tape.
I've only listened to it once so I can't really be too subjective with
my opinions. On initial listen though I would give it a hearty thumbs
up. I'm sure all you folk should enjoy the album. So bring on the
release date so we can all see the official release. I'm keen to see
the gatefold and album cover artwork etc.

I had an even briefer listen to the Rush albums, probably the first 2
songs on each tape. Killer! This is huge. Rush fans are going to love
it. Great production and Peart is in fine form. Great sound overall.
I'm really wanting to get back home and have a good listen to this
album. Anyway here's the track listing:-

    Disc 1.
    1.Dreamline 2. Limelight 3. Driven 4. Bravado 5. Animate 6. Show Don't
    Tell 7. The Trees 8. Nobody's Head
    1. Closer to the Heart 2. 2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx
    /Discovery/Presentation/Oracle:The Dream/Soliloquy/Grand Finale

    Disc 2.
    1. Test for Echo 2. Analog Kid 3. Freewill 4. Roll the Bones 5. Stick it
Out 6. Resist 7. Leave that Thing Alone
    1. Neil's Solo 2. Natural Science 3. The Spirit of Radio 4. Tom Sawyer
    5. XYZ

    Disc 3.
    1. Bastille Day 2. ByTor and the Snow Dog 3. Xanadu 4. A Farewell to
    Kings 5. Something for Nothing
    1. Cygnus X-1 2. Anthem 3. Working Men 4. Fly by Night 5. In the Mood 6.
    Cinderella Man

Disc 1 has some intro music, can't remember what it is, but it's very
well known. The disc has a similar start to Show of Hands, but not as
long. Disc 3 was recorded in London. They announce this before they
tear into Bastille Day. I'm hanging to get back home to hear this in
    its entirety.
Bring on those release dates. Hope this tides over those info hungry
    people out there. Cheers.

Good thing we all spell "Who gives a fucking shit?" the same way, eh?

    :)

I can't wait to welcome in NEW MILLENIUMMMM :)

    > I think you'd have to look at a song and ask yourself, "If this song
    > never existed, would the state of music as we know it be totally
    > different today?"

I vote for "Dueling Banjos". Without it, society wouldn't have matured
to the point it has now where we don't slag on the mentally retarded (or
dentally challenged) as we once did. Now take into account that without
Deliverance, Burt Reynolds would be just another actor, and you can see
why this is such a pivotal song in music's history.

DT should cover it, with Derek playing the second voice, just to piss
    off those who:

    1) Don't like country music
    2) Don't like Derek using a guitar sound
    3) Don't like Derek

    :)

    Buh bye,
    Jon

The British spelling of "wanker" would also be "wankre", but of course this
word doesn't even exist in British English. British people would never
admit to knowing what the word even means. :-)

Did anyone catch Conan the other night? but Conan actually played 10-15 seconds of "Somthing For Nothing", around the part where Geddy is shreaking!!

I forgot the context, as I was really wasn't paying close attention, but boy did I wake up when that came on!!! Conan is the only one with a sack large enough to do that :)

Someone in the last 'jam said someone ought to do one of those"...ate my balls" pages for Dream Theater. Well, I didn't know it was a series. This is the first one I saw. I didn't check before I sent it, so I don't know if it's still active, but it's worth the laugh if it is. enjoy.
