    OH, WAIT! not here! :)

(that's a joke, by the way)

Realise is the english (and might I add, English was around long before
American) spelling. Realize has been americanized. I think the Brits
also say "practise" where we say "practice." I believe I've seen that in
the British guitar mag "Guitar Technique", where I found a 'dead good' (I
think that's another British expression) transcription of UaGM along with
a CD of a guy breaking down the solo 2 bars by 2 bars. Not too shabby.

No, it is not. It was tentatively scheduled for an October release but the
label decided to wait until the new year to release it. Look for it in
    January.

I don't know whethe they're still with Magna Carta or not, but I believe

    Hi all...

It's me again, making one of my entirely too infrequent posts to the
Jam...just thought I'd add my voice to the chorus of praise for the above-
mentioned album, which is indeed an incredible slice o' jazz-fusion, the type
of which we sadly don't get enough of these days.

However, the same wonderful label that brought us "Vital Tech Tones" has also
just given us an album that, IMO, is even better. It's called "Show Me What
You Can Do," and it's got Frank Gambale and Stuart Hamm in the guitar and bass
slots along with Steve Smith. Where "Vital Tech Tones" is jazzier and
bluesier, "Show Me What You Can Do" is heavier and even more intense. I urge
those of you out there with a liking for jazz-rock a la The Dregs, Brand X,
and so on to check out this album.

Obligatory DT content: Wouldn't it have been cool if they'd just put out the
live CDs and video in a really nifty box a la Metallica's "Binge and Purge"?
    Can't have everything, I guess...

OK, I heard quite alot about these 2 bands Tribal Tech and Vital Tech
    Tones.
After reading someone's comparisons of Tribal Tech I decided to check
out this band ASAP. But now I find this other one. :) Can someone post
me privately and tell me some more about these 2 bands, what kinda music
they play, musicians, time they existed, and why I never heard of them?
    ;)
I know Scott Henderson from some jazz rock albums and heard a band in my
town playing his covers (AWESOME gigs)

Also, anyone knows a band called "Mezzoforte"? Covers played by the same
band and it was ALL AWESOME JAZZ ROCK JAMMING! Some of the best music I
    heard.

    Thanks, CyberDuke

P.S And don't make me post this over and over again! ;)

Previously on Once in A Livetime:

Anthony J Tully gave us a rundown on most of CD2. Here is the rest ie., CD1.

    ******************************************************************************
    *********

    Track List on promo tape

    Side A
    1. ACOS I the instrumental
    2. ACOS II
    3. Puppies on Acid
    4. Just let Me Breathe
    5. Voices
    6. Take The Time

    Side B
    1. Keyboard Solo
    2. Lines In The Sand
    3. Scarred
    4. ACOS IV
    5. Ytse Jam
    6. Drum Solo

    More detail later!

As far as the mix goes, I think the drums and bass jump right out on both
tapes, but then my stereo has a groove button which boosts the lower
frequencies. That said, when you play FII next to it, the tracks from that
one on the live album are MUCH heavier/bassier. It's like having DT playing
there for you, the sound is very good.

    ******************************************************************************
    ******************

For those who want to know about the FII tracks on Tape 2 (CD2) side 2:

Trial of Tears (not TRAIL, tape liner is wrong and yes I did mention it to the
record co!) starts with the tinkly/moody Yes-type bit background keyboards as
usual and then Johnny P comes in on guitar and adds in some Close Encounters
repeats just to wind everyone up. Where the main riff comes in the drum and
bass hit ya in the face. Then we have James' voice softly in complete
contrast. Later on his voice soars like an eagle into the repeat of the drum
and bass pattern which goes into JP's guitar solo (ya know the Alan Holdsworth
influenced one) which is mega float off time for me. The it's all in for the
grand finale with JP doing a bit more Close Encounters. In fact the whole
song is brilliant. This is now in my list of Top 10 DT/Side Project songs
with the top 4 being Metropolis, ACOS, Universal Mind and Trial of Tears.

Hollow Years intro starts with Johnny P giving it some on the protoype Ibanez
electric classical with the rest of the band in the background. The solo
later on is almost like a balalaika/bouzouki sound with fast picking. Nice
piano sound/playing from Derek in the end melody line with some closer backing
vox as on the CD. Bass is very subtle and sounds like diddy Majesty drum kit
is being used as it was at the London Forum. The whole song flows beautifully
(like JR's kb playing, ha ha had to get that one in).

TAMP (electric classical guitar again I think) has a first rate saxopone solo
and the fills are pretty amazing too. This song is MADE for that sax (like
Another Day). They take everything RIGHT down for the last verse
(reflection), you can feel Johnny P's eyes welling up with tears (and probably
most of those in the audience too, there is SO much emotion) and the guitar is
barely audible just strumming softly. Bass and drums complete and enhance as
usual, which is what the song requires.

I've just been playing FII again after not being able to unglue LTE from the
CD player for quite a while now. Do yerself a favour AJT, listen to it again
    and then some!

The sound is also very clear on Tape 1/CD1 complete with a few clams here and
there, but it still never ceases to amaze me how they play it all.

    Promo Tape 1 (CD1).

    Side A.

    1. ACOS I: the instrumental: starts with cheering and football chorus type vox
(think PInk Floyd Meddle) from the audience over the laid-back intro which
leads into Mikey's woodblock chuckling sounds.

    2. ACOS II: where James's vox come in (life's a long song and it is about a
    life).

    3. Puppies on Acid: THAT geetar rhythm (and THAT JP sound) once again, to a
big cheer from the crowd, into the upfront kb (in fact the intro to The Mirror
    from Awake).

    4. Just let Me Breathe carries straight on from track 3. I don't think James
does breathe much in the long wordy bit at all in fact, esp at the end! Derek
and JP really shred on this one, superbly together. Drum and bass in yer
    face.

    5. Voices: John Myung playing the high bass melody which gradually moves down
the fretboard and is joined by kb and guitar. I love the piano bit where the
soft vocals start. Kick drum + bass accents build up the pressure. The
conversation samples are there too. A real mix of contrasts this song.
Features Del-Boy Sherinian heavily on Zep Kashmir kb sound and he does it
well. Fine guitar squeal from JP before the mega-shred solo at the end of the
song. JLB takes the prize for his vox just before the end.

    6. Take The Time: starting with different kb from I+W and I liked them (little
bit of Chewbacca on Crack and Steroids at the end). Mikey starts the vox and
JLB takes over. Audience joins in with harmony Take the Time bits. Love that
bass slide and the freebird guitar solo. Actually two mad drummer friends
rang (Ralgex and Ryan) while this was playing so they got Mikey's ridiculous
drum fills down the phone at high volume for calling me names just because I
went to see Terry B and they didn't!

    Side B.

    1. Keyboard Solo: Nice one (includes his riff from Lines in the Sand, into
some ELP type stuff). Oh and anyone who slags of Del-Boy's live kb playing
is talking out of their choccy starfish i.m.o!

    2. Lines In The Sand: was it Del or was it John at the beginning? Little Weed
knows the answer. According to John Myung this was the first song they ever
wrote with Derek and what a first! Definitely in my top 10 DT songs which is
fast stretching into a top 20. The guitar solo in this one is a complete
musical orgasm. JP and MP handle backing vox duties.

    3. Scarred: Mikey's drums scar your soul starting with little scratches from
the ride cymbal. I love the alternative route to the ending on this one
    driving into

    4. ACOS IV: Wonderful jazz/fusion stuff with Del-Boy and Johnny P chasing each
other around with their melody lines like Tom & Jerry.

    5. Ytse Jam: Classic. Mike P beats his cymbals to a pulp again and Derek
cleans up with the classical piano Mozart bit. Johnny P shreds on riff with
John Myung and MP yells out "Fasten your seatbelts Paris" as the whole band
shred their way into his drum solo.

    6. Drum Solo: 'Mad Mick McDrum' (copyright: Nikki Brooks) strikes again,
taking no prisoners with his machine gun double bass drum parts, ETC!!!!!!!

Thank you and goodnight (time for beddybyes).

Bits win hands down don't ya think AJT?
