I must admit that this opinion is the most objective I read in all these
flames wars concernif DT/FII, and that's why it SERIOUSLY made me think
    about the above said!

    Fact:
    - There ARE few songs on FII which are probably made for comercial
    reasons.

OK, Anna Lee is AWESOME song, as the others, very catchy melodies etc.
But my concern is not this, I like FII. My concern is future DT albums.
And this guy Dave try to point out that there is a chance for DT to go
into commercial waters. Again, as he said, just opinion and something to
    discuss about.

I'll say again what I said before, I remember Mike Portnoy interview
saying that what he loves about DT is that they really compose without
prejudice and ARE NOT influenced by mainstream music industry. They do
    what they love!

Is it possible that this attitude dissapears as the time goes by? Is it
possible that after 2 more albums DT turns into completily average sweet
rock band who happens to play damn good?

Dave also said one very interesting thought on LTE. I never seen it as
such - that Mike and John, because of lack of prog. elements in DT need
projects like LTE to fully express themselves! Very intriguing thought!
    I just hope it's not true! :)

    Now I'm really worried!

Woooohooooooo! Jon, when you come to Macedonia (where's that my god? ;)
you have dinner ON ME ! :)

I saw this movie when I was a kid and that scene of Dueling Banjos
remained firm in my mind (dunno why). Later, few years I was looking for
this movie and never found it. And than accidently on radios I caught it
and recorded it! :) Man, this is one of the best songs EVER! So cool, so
    damn good!

That would be a thing. Petrucci and Myung doubling each other, sitting
    on wailing chairs. :)

Try to consolidate your posts. 4 or 5 in a row is excessively annoying, and
usually they're pretty short. I would venture to say most don't enjoy receiving
    the NikJam.

I think this is a bad mistake. If you just play a bunch of stuff the people in the bar have never heard of, they won't want to listen to you, and they'll just think "wow that singer with the high voice is really getting on my nerves with all that opera-like shit." When you're playing covers, people want to hear music they know. This has been a real problem with my band when we do cover gigs, 'cause we want to do stuff we like, aka DT, Rush, Tea Party, I Mother Earth, and other non-super-mainstream stuff (and yes, I know TP and IME are huge in canada, but this is Texas, where Canadians are about as evil as Yankees :). We end up playing crap like third eye blind, Smash Mouth (go listen to "The music's over," by the doors, for some interesting listening), and other pop bands like that. The point of doing cover gigs is to make money at parties (the majority of the money my band has made to finance our CD came from 2 Proms and a party or two, and it was waaay more money than about 15 original music club gigs), and you won't be asked to play parties if you do a bunch of stuff noone except the band likes. That having been said, it's a damn cool idea to do a prog medley. I say go for it, but you should really put in some Rush to give people an anchor, something for them to get into so you can keep their attention while you open their minds. It's also a connection point. People will think "Hmmm, music like Rush, a really cool band, only different. Maybe I should check some of that out."

i just had an interesting thought. right now, im listening to "Another Day" ( on IAW's CD ) ive had a brainstorm. let's poll how everybody feels about each song, but one rule : has to be about a person you are close to. i know it sounds kinda corny ( hey, i know its been done, but what the hey, give it a go :) ), but the topics are getting kinda monotnous dontcha think ?

Well, that always happens eventually. Artists usually break new ground early in their careers, then they just recycle from there on out. But hey ground-breaking creativity is very, very rare, the rest is just good (or bad) music. You can play the blues until you're 105, and no one will give you a hard time for not "breaking new ground"!

Actually, there's some studies that say the human brain starts losing it's ability to create "new" things and adapt by the age of 25. You're pretty stuck in your ways by then. You're also less likely to try new foods, new musical styles, etc. (OK, maybe somebody's parents out there got into "rap", but not many) Of course there are exceptions...

Yeah, I know where Macedonia is... Don't expect many visitors from the U.S.! Our wonderful president is gonna be bombing you guys any day. Not a safe place for americans (or brits). But I'm getting way off track here...violation of ytselaw. ;o)

    Hi All ...

Time from another ytsejam post from that Skadz character. For those of you who don't know me, I run this list ( i won't say moderate, well, at least not yet ;) I've been doing it for all too long now (over 2 1/2 years now) and try my best to keep a handle on things, but sometimes fail miserably due to other time commitments (like that job thing ;) If you ever have any questions/comments/requests, please mail me at skadz@dreamt.org.

    Boring Stuff ------------

We currently have 1256 subscribers, 69 of which are in ack mode, the rest in digest mode.

Archives of ALL back issues of the ytsejam (starting somewhere around 200) are ALWAYS available at:

    ftp://ftp.dreamt.org/pub/ytsejam/

Me and an official website webmaster to be named later are working on a way to get these mailable via a web form, hopefully it will be up RSN. I will also hopefully (some day ;) making some sort of search engine, soyou can search through past jams. I am also probably going to try and pull all the old ones off AX.COM one day and make the archive even more complete. These eon't be available too quickly, but definately things I have on my mind to do.

    Rules/Regulations/Etc ---------------------

This is always a touchy subject for me and a lot of jammers (especially alot of the jammers who have been around for a long time), but this is how I think of things.

The number one rule of the ytsejam is this:

    THINK BEFORE YOU POST

I am 100% completely sick of seeing off the cuff wise ass remarks on the jam. And I don't want to see them anymore. Take them to private email. This is NOT the place. I have already been mailing people about their posting habits and plan on continuing to do it until I see alot of this junk stopping.

The rule of the ytsejam used to be 3 strikes and you are out. I don't believe in this. If I warn you about something and you keep it up, I will throw you off this list without thinking twice. I don't care who you are or what, if you get warned about your posting behavior, stop, don't try and slide something past of whatever, rememver Big Brother is ALWAYS watching (asking the members of the #ytsejam IRC channel ;) Things that will get you warned and subsequently thrown off INCLUDE (but are not limited to):

    1. Starting or Continuing "Threads From Hell", these include things like:

    a. Kevin vs. Derek b. James Sucks c. How to spell things (more on this later) d. God / Religion e. People's Sexuality f. NIN, Blind Melon, etc (long stories ;) g. Metallica Sold Out h. Dream Theater Sold Out i. etc etc etc

    2. Publically flaming someone on the jam 3. Posting MIME/HTML to the jam 4. Sending Forwarded Messages/Jokes to the jam (this is NOT the place) 5. Reposting large amounts of previous emails in replies 6. Large signature files at the ends of messages 7. Basically doing anything which is completely inappropriate for this list

A couple of notes, first, threads from hell. The current (and seemingly finally finished keyboardist debate) spelling war on the jam ends NOW. Continuing it after this message hits a digest gets you the one warning you get. Takes flames to private email, this is not the place. An addendum to this is if you post a flame which goes way beyond the limits of a regular flame (aka becomes a personal attack on someone) will get you IMMEDIATELY removed from the list. MIME/HTML posts are NOT allowed on this mailing list. Change your damn sending type to regular text, it is not that hard. Please make sure to trim down replies to the jam as much as possible (it just wastes space) If someone is interested in your reply, they probably read the original email as well. Also, please try to keep signatures as small as possible. No ASCII art, 10 lines ot lyrics, etc.

Before asking any questions on the jam, please make sure to read the Dream Theater FAQ (which can always be found at http://www.dreamtheater.net/

I am hoping (one day) to get a Ytsejam FAQ going, any volunteers? No, Gabbo, you are NOT allowed to volunteer ;) (kidding!!!)

I am NOT in anyway trying to be an asshole here, just trying to make this mailing list used for the purpose it was intended for, which is to talk about DT and related (at least somewhat related) topics. As I have said, my main rule is think before you post. If you are not sure if you should post a reply, don't! send it in private email.

Well, I think that is all I am going to say for now. Thanks for listening.

    Skadz

Hey, sorry I've been away some lately, but I've been in the process of moving. Anyway, I just found out that Galactc Cowboys and King's X are playing Mississippi Nights in St. Louis Nov. 6. Showtime is at 9pm. For more info, call (314) 421-3853. Also, Sepultura, Vision of Disorder, and Earth Crisis are playing Pops (in Sauget, IL) Oct. 16 (for more info, call (618) 274-2760). I'll definitely be at the GC/KX show, and possibly be at the Sepultura show. Also, any jammers that might be in the Columbia, MO area, I just moved up there, so e-mail me and we can maybe get together and hang or something.

I know that I have been away for a while but when did the ytsejam turn into the Nik Brooks self appreciation society ?

    Okay down to business :)

The new Superior disc is out and about and they have made a fairly decent second album. They definitely haven't made 'Behind' again, which I am sure is a good thing. They have certainly made a very 'progressive' album, in that it is quite a step forward from 'Behind' although those trademark riffs are still there. The Japanese bonus songs, including an acoustic version of 'Why' with guest vocals from Andre Matos from Angra. Easily worth 9/10, one point is deducted for the truly horrendous 'Free Minded' which is just the worst song Superior has recorded, sorry Bernd :)

Next up is Shadow Gallery. It's been a very long wait for this and it is well worth it. It rocks harder than 'Carved In Stone' and right now this Cd has left my jaw stuck to the floor. Already my fave release of the year. Despite what some have said this disc is completely cheese-free :) 10/10

Yeah I can see what you're getting at here, but don't you guys get it?! This isn't about what we *really* think the best song of the millennium is - it's about getting OFB all the damned exposure we can get them through any damned contest available. I know this contest is merely a bees dick on the scale of all things contest/poll/voting-wise, it's result aren't gonna win anyone anything, but if we can bombard as many of these things as possible and create some well deserved notoriety for ourselves here on the Jam, then hopefully some sort of exposure, or at least curiosity, will come for the crown-jewel of all bands that is the reason for the existance of this mailing list. (TIC!) :)

We all know that the Internet, Email and related communication technologies are slowly dominating our age of society, and if one day this 'Information Superhighway' becomes a reality rather than an image formed in the sweat from Bill Gates meat-beating hand, then the ystejammers may just be famous!

I don't care if your fav song isn't ACOS - mine isn't either, but just vote for it anyway, 3600 votes distributed out over a variety of DT's songs (or any of your fav Jazz or classical or whatever songs for that matter) aren't gonna do shit.

So vote for ACOS! One day you'll thank me....
