    Hey jammerz,

I don't know if this had been mentioned before, put I simply can't keep
    silence about this
    awesome release.
I mean Frank Gambale, Stuart Hamm and Steve Smith's album called 'Show e
    what you can do'.
It's simply awesome! For those of you who liked Vital Tech Tones it's the
    very right thing to get.
Also I know that some ppl on this list had been waiting for long to hear a
new release from Stuart Hamm (his work on Crystal Planet is not
satisfactory) - this is the right thing for you guys!
Stu at his very best!!! One more thing - I never realised that Steve was
such an awesome drummer (well, at least untill I heard the VTT, but SMWYCD
    confirmed this).
I am not talking about Frank - what else could we expect from him?!
Stu told me that he had never been satisfied with his release more than
this time and I guess this also mean something.
You can check out a small sample from it at: http://www.glasnet.ru/~tatisch
in the section for the s/clips.

I would extend that particular description to the entire paragraph,
    but that's just me... :-)

I don't think the side projects are a result of the members being
dissatisfied with what DT is doing, but rather a chance for them to
stretch their musical wings outside of the confines of what DT
represents to them. I think the members have a VERY clear vision
of what DT is and is not (I think it's also very different from what the
*fans* think, but that's another story). Rather than being a divisive
force, I think it helps/will help DT be more cohesive by assuring
that everyone has the necessary outlets to express their full
    creative abilities.

Okay, Graham, gotta disagree with you there. I think "Free Minded" is one
of the most kickass songs on the disc. I'm not exactly sure why it rokz my
nadz so much, but it does. Might be the thousand and one musical styles
thrown into the mix, or it might be the great keys solos, or the wicked
time changes.....hell, maybe it's all of the above.

And I have to give mad props to Bernd and the boyz for putting out an album
like "Younique" with a song like "Free Minded". It's obvious from just one
listen to this disc that the band is intent only on making the music THEY
want to make. Not what their label wants them to put out. Not what Top-10
Radio wants them to put out. They are not compromising at all and I applaud
    them for it.

    Phil

It is, as someone noted, entirely a matter of principle. And I think you should care.

Anyone been to that bar in Boston that's near Fenway where they have the
dueling pianos. I've been to Boston once and we hit a few bars that
night. Expensive beers though at this place but they are 20-24 ounce
bottles. You should check out the dueling pianos if he get a chance.

Well, yesterday in my rules stuff, i forgot one :)

    Top 5/10/20/30/92/etd lists.

There is a proper way to do these and a WRONG way.

The wrong way is easy. A message like "Why doesn't everyone send their favorite 5 guitarists to the ytsejam, so we can see who everybody likes" is the WRONG way.

Now, on the other hand, if you say. "Hey! Why doesn't everyone send ME their top 5 guitarists and I will compile statistics and send a summary to the ytsejam" Have a blast, I'm fine with that.

Basically, just don't CLUTTER the jam :)

    Thanks Again! Skadz

    >If you just play a bunch of stuff the >people in the bar have never heard of, >they won't want to listen to you,

how true. touring with a rock band in the mid 70's we played Uriah Heeps "July Morning" for an openning song several times. what we found was that majority of the people looked bored and mis-placed. they were wanting to hear top 40 type stuff. changing the song to Styx's "Sweet Madame Blue" produced the same results since the radio stations weren't playing this cut off of Styx's album.

we thought this stuff would be great to warm up on since most people don't get off their butts and dance during the first set anyway. even though we had a super vocalist to pull these songs off (as well as draw some attention from a few labels), people were just not interested.

moral of the story: >people want to hear music they know

very sad, but, very very true.

    >THINK BEFORE YOU POST

heh... like i try to keep teaching my 6 yr old son, "Think before you do."

btw, i ran into a female country singer (15 yrs experienced) last month and while we were driving to a theater i cranked up TAMP which was playing on my cd player. after a couple of minutes of listening, i noticed that her jaw had dropped and that she was intently listening to the song. she finally said, "Wow! The percussion is awesome." after the song had played, she had nothing but really good things to say about the band. (heh... it'd be really kewl to convert a country singer/writer to OFB.) i found it most difficult to bite my tongue and give her the space to listen while the song was playing. even though she's extremly good at what she's doing, i find it most difficult to listen to her perform -- i just don't like country. <g>

CyberDuke responded to Dave's post: >OK, Anna Lee is AWESOME song, as the others, very catchy melodies etc.

Here I thought I was the only 'jammer who absolutely LOVES "Anna Lee". I know it has that Elton-John-ish sound to it, but hey, DT do it BETTER. This song has grown on me a lot more than I thought it would when I first heard it a year ago. And it sounded GREAT live, as well. As far as the other "poppy" tunes on FII, "Hollow Years" still sounds as good as ever (also a great live one), but YNM and TAMP have lost flavor, especially since I now have a copy of the TAMP demo (which I like a LOT better).

    >But my concern is not this, I like FII. My concern is future DT albums. >And this guy Dave try to point out that there is a chance for DT to go >into commercial waters. Again, as he said, just opinion and something to >discuss about.

I dunno ... I don't think DT will ever put out an album FULL of pop/commercial songs. I have thought that possibly FII WAS "DT's radio-friendly album", and that what will follow will have just as much of its own identity. I look at WDADU as "DT's technical/dramatic album"; I&W as "DT's prog opus", Awake as "DT's heavy/dark album", and ACOS as "DT's prog masterpiece and tribute cover show". Each album has concentrated on a certain aspect or element of the band and its influences. Basically, all I'm hoping for with the next album is that it's DIFFERENT, that DT don't rehash anything they've already done. (I actually hope Metropolis II isn't *too* similar to I ... as good of course, but with its own ID.) FII did explore commercial waters to an extent, and the band's influences became a lot more apparent. Hopefully they won't continue in that direction, not for the sake of not becoming commercial, but for unpredictability, creativity, and all of the other things DT have become known for (as well as things they *haven't* become known for *yet*).

LTE? It did cross my mind as being a possible outlet of *some* sort. You have to remember though, the whole concept of LTE was about MP collaborating with 3 other musicians, *one* of whom he decided was going to be JP. I wonder if it was really about having a "progressive outlet of creativity" outside of DT, which seemed to be moving in a different direction, but I doubt it. Either way, I love the LTE album, and can't wait for the new one next year. (1999, hell yeah ... hopefully my first YtseCon, a new DT album, a new LTE album, Platypus, new QR, new Pantera ... next year is looking GREAT already!!!)

Hi, long time since Ive posted, but schools back in session :-( and I havent had much time to read a lot of my mail. Anyway....

<<So I'd buy it all over again, although I might pop it in the old CD player more often if it only had my 4 favorite songs on it....>>

well, I think I can solve this problem...

most CD players have a program thingy on them, so, just program in the songs you want it to play, and then, you only get those songs, whithout the struggle of having to skip track after track (ie. YNM, HY, AL - at least those are the ones I usually pass over). problem solved.

<<Well, that always happens eventually. Artists usually break new ground early in their careers, then they just recycle from there on out. But hey ground-breaking creativity is very, very rare, the rest is just good (or bad) music. You can play the blues until you're 105, and no one will give you a hard time for not "breaking new ground"! >>

looks like SOMEONE hasnt been listening to much King Crimson, hmmm? ;-)

They are probably the only prog rock band I can think of (with the possible exception of Rush, who never went mainstream, at least for most of the part, yet we can't forget Time Stand Still, can we?) that never commercialized. In fact, I'll even say that they got a tad stranger since they first started. I dont think DT would try to go totally mainstream, though, it really would be a waste of their talent and I know that the bulk of their fans would leave if they did (ala M*ta*lica). But then again, the fans shouldn't decide their musical direction, they can do what they want, but I still can't picture a guitarist like Petrucci or a drummer like Portnoy doing mainstream or commercial stuff and no prog.

BTW, I was wondering if Petrucci's ever given though to doing a solo album like Vai Morse or DiMeola. I think that would kick arse.
