    Hi

Just thought I'd point out something I noticed the other day when
listening to FII. People have been saying that DT are going commercial
and all I can say is, No way. Take for example Hollow years which is the
most commercially acceptable track on FII (yet I always think that the
texture created by that song reminds me of Sting, probably due to the
use of the nylon guitar). The other day I stuck this song on and noticed
something that I hadn't noticed before.

During the chorus (first one especially) I had assumed (not having
properly listened to it) that it was a straight forward rock/pop drum
part i.e.. kick on 1+3 snare on 2+4 and quaver or 8th note hi-hat.
However it isn't it is in fact extremely cool and progressive, yet not
too complicated. Not only is it cool and progressive sounding it also
has a bit a classical based theory behind it (very prog), because the
kick drums is outlining the main accents of the military style snare
rolls that can be heard just before it (minus 1 accent I think) sort of
like repetition between instruments in an orchestra. It is for this
reason that I really like drummers like MP and a lot of jazz and fusion
drummers, because they treat the drums as an instrument and not a time
keeper. If people want a time keeper (which the pop industry seem to
want) to go bang bang bang bang, then they should buy a metronome.

Now I think that parts such as this which appear all through FII prove
that DT are the prog band that everybody loves (or should).

On a different note (perhaps C#), I just got a programme of the front of
Personal Computer World called Spinner Plus which acts as like a radio
on the net and plays music while you surf, I know thats not special but
what is, is that its got a progressive channel. I just used it and was
listening to Dixie Dregs, Lemeur Voice, Kansas, and Dream Theater. I
also tried the metal channel and got Queensryche (that song from last
    action hero).

I sent a subscription email last night, so I hope I'm on.
I just moved in July, so had to take a temporary break from the Dream
    Theater email.

I understand that Once in a Lifetime is due out OCT 27, right? I CAN'T
WAIT!!!! I saw them in Fort Worth, and they were EXCELLENT live!!

Also, I ordered Shadow Gallery's new CD "Tyranny". Is this incredible or
what??!! I've listened to it a couple times, and it ROCKS and is a great
concept album. It seems like they're trying to portray a concept similar to
Operation: mindcrime. If anyone hasn't gotten this CD yet, then CHECK IT
    OUT! It's awesome.

    Hopefully this email posted.

Really good music and awesome players!!! Willis is really one of
the best bassist I've ever heard (add to that list also Myung and
    Tony Levin, of course).
But I dunno more about this. Don't know if Scott has always been
with TT or what... If anybody knows, please, mail me or the list!
And does anyone know some more bands of this same style that are
    worth checking out?

    Thanks,

Hi folks and welcome to the next episode of the Nikjam ;-)

    Darth1@aol.com asked:

(1)> Puppies on Acid: Newbie question here... What album is this off of?
Never heard it before... Ive seen the name floating around everywhere... clue
    me in please.

It is the introduction to THE MIRROR from DT's album AWAKE and they often play
it during their set (on the current tour anyway).

    (2) > I cant wait to hear Lines In the Sand live!

It rocks! Preceded by Del-Boy Shenanigan's kb solo on Once in A Livetime
double live CD. He plays around with the main melody and shreds it up a bit.

    (3) > LTE - State of Grace

My fave track from LTE at the moment.

    ALSO, my 2p:

Dream Theater will be featured in the second issue of a new rock mag called
CLASSIC ROCK. The first issue is out now (by the same publishers as Metal
Hammer, ie., Dennis) and features G&R, Marillion, Thin Lizzy, Genesis etc.
Free CD on the front. Second issue will be out at the beginning of December.
If you have problems finding it at all, just email or phone the company
(Dennis Publishing) at the front of a Metal Hammer magazine.

Rock is dead ...................... long live Classic Rock!

(Actually it never went away. It was just subject to censorship by the music
press in this country, the UK, which is why I decided to make it my business
    to change all that.)

ytsejam shirt. I figure I'll make another mention of it now, for anyone
who missed my previous announcements. Sorry if you know all this
    already:

There's a new ytsejam shirt. It costs $15 plus $3 for shipping, and is a
high-quality black shirt with a heart-print on the front and full image
on the back. Scans of the shirt are on my website, at
www.j51.com/~mrasiel. The only size left at this time is XL. Feel free
    to e-mail me w/questions.

Welcome to today's second instalment of the Nikjam (smirk).

More on the new magazine which features some decent bands ..... at last!!

As we all know, Kerrang is now for 15 year olds and Metal Hammer is heading that way.

Classic Rock is edited by Jerry Ewing and Dave Ling. Derek Oliver (whose name you will find on various DT albums) is also a contributor. Tel 0171 631 1433, fax 0171 917 7655, e-mail production.oneshots@dennis.co.uk if you wish to suggest future bands to feature or find out when/where you can buy the magazine. There have been many bands mentioned and reviewed on the ytsejam and there must be many more out there who deserve press.

Other bands featured this month include Bruce Dickinson, Mott the Hoople, Deep Purple and Brian May.

Next issue, in addition to Dream Theater, featured bands are Black Sabbath, Rush, Journey, Kings X and more.

Two examples from the news section are the new UK album from John Wetton et al, the DT double live CD 'Once in a Livetime' and the Rush triple live CD, 'Different Stages'.

As far as the muso mags (Guitarist and Bassist) are concerned, interviews and transcriptions I have personally had published so far include:

Guitarist; John Petrucci (DT), Steve Howe (Yes), Reb Beach (Alice Cooper), Glenn Tipton (Priest), Paul Gilbert (additional text for the big article on him in Guitarist recently), Michael Schenker, Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick),

Bassist; John Myung bassline transcription, Nibbs (Saxon), Maxine Petrucci (Vixen), Tom Petersson (CT) and Thin Lizzy/Limehouse Lizzy and there's more to come.

So now we can hopefully can start reading about bands we all know and love again in the UK instead of having to put up with the subversive censorship of the last few years .........

    Hey Jammers,

While we're on the "discusion" of how awsome Anna Lee is, I have one quick question. Is there any connection between Anna Lee and Edgar Allen Poe's Annabel Lee? Maybe a character symbolism or something. I love Poe's works (especially the Pit and the Pendullem) but haven't read Annabel Lee in a while and dont quite remember it. That would be cool if they or SX did something related to Poe's work.

    Jam,

With the 6 CD changer in my car, I stare at my selection and change the discs about once a week (unless I get a new CD), so I usually select one type of every "mood" so I'm prepared for each mood I'll be in during the week. However, usually, I'll find I only listen to 1 or perhaps 2 of the 6 disc's during the week based on my prevailing mood. Since basically I'm only in my car to my school and back, I can't listen to really long songs (ie. ACOS, or anything above 10 minutes).

That's a little frusterating but what would be REALLY cool is to have a 100 or 124 disc changer for a car (I don't think they make them unfortunately) with a moble phone link to the internet CDDB database and a built in display on the dash board for selection... THAT WOULD BE COOL!...

    >For all the jammers who like good music check out the following: >Yngwie Malmsteen "Facing the Animal" > -this has Cozy Powell and Yngwie has never sounded so inspired. >Really fresh.

Cozy Powell... who cares? Yngwie always buys the best musicians available - he's had Barry Sparks, Shane Galaas, Jens Johansson, Mats Olausson, Barriemore Barlow and a pack of others. So what's so special with Cozy Powell, except that this was his last recording (?) ?

So, I guess you like "Facing the Animal", eh? I could just put another point of view, that I've listened to that as well, VERY carefully, in fact - and boy, it isn't worth the plastic it's been pressed upon!

I really despise my fellow countryman, for everything he stands for, both musically and by his image and style. Really fresh, yeah... now he's at last playing some other scale than harmonic E minor over a Em - C/E chord progression. He's actually playing both diminished scales and pentatonic ones! Fancy that! He's making progress here! And, whoa, the verse of track #3 goes in 7/8! But, it doesn't make the album in whole THE LEAST better!

Every f---ing Yngwie-song sounds just the same. Same idea, spinned over and over again. And the solos, they really suck. Well, he's fast (the fastest and most stabile guy I've heard...), but speed doesn't make that profound feeling and melody a good solo has (JP/Vai/Satch/Gilmour etc etc etc).

I guess these were two completely different opinions. If you consider buying FtA - listen to it. More than once. I find it really hard to believe that anybody can think good of FtA, no matter how many listens you have.

I dig neoclassical metal, and I used to like Yngwie. But no more. Not ever.

And please take note of that the only one I flame here is Yngwie.
