"Stained Glass" is a pristine recording of the Dutch fanclub gig DT played
this past June. It would be ready for release right now if the liner were
done. The pro artist James May has already commenced liner design and I'll
probably be able to send the liner to Joe McCormick to be printed by the
middle of next week (hopefully). Basically, with this James May / Joe
McCormick combo, you get pro liner design (with tons of photos from the fan
club gig additionally) and magazine-quality multi-page booklet liners. I
will open for pre-orders in a week-and-a-half or so.
I'm really jealous of the Dutch fan club. =) The setlist was truly
fan-oriented. Mike and Derek, how about a fan club gig for each region?
I'd fly anywhere in a heartbeat if you did one here. It'd be an easy
sell-out... (remember HftH?)

Well, Mister D, I'm sorry to say that I CAN play pentatonic scales, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, diminished and common minor and major ones as well. Perhaps not as fast as YM - but hey, I've played BASS for less than a year. I haven't played classic/western/electric guitar seriously at all. So, soloing is really not my stuff to practice - but I do it anyway.

No, I can't - and why should I bother? There's nothing wrong with shredding if it has some CONTENTS! YM's shredding is nothing more than, pure shredding. And that really makes me & my ears tired. All he wants to do is to show the world how fast he is - but the things he plays so fast, they hold no substance. It's, how could you put that... BORING!

ACOS was played a number of times live earlier in DT's career. Portnoy said
at a drum clinic earlier this year in Marietta that they would probably
never play the whole thing again because there's so much other material
that they have that playing all of ACOS would "kinda throw off the balance"
and not allow for a proper representation of all the stuff they' ve done.
Kinda sad; I'd like to see a special show or two where they played it all.
It's my fave DT song, too. :)

Meanwhile, members of the ytsecommune railed against the new font on the
upcoming live album. Friends, Romans, countrymen: lend me your ears. I
have come to praise OFB, not to bury them. A different style of text does
not a bad album make. The one thing that has been consistent is the
decorated M which is what I expect. Judge them not on cover lettering, but
on content. BTW, the picture itself is "killer".

of it. As a matter of fact, it was played live before it the offical
version was recorded and released, most notably at the Limelight in New
York on March 4, 1993. (Now that I looked that up, I just remembered that
I interned in a building right next to the Limelight this past summer and I
had forgotten that it was the site of that infamous show.) Later, it was
played in its entirety at most of their concerts from the spring of '95
through the end of that year, which add up to a little more than a dozen
times.

While frustration at Ticketmaster is understandable as well as it
is common, I feel an urge to comment on this from my pro-greed,
"far-right," pro-capitalism (and pro-rationality) perspective.
Ticketmaster are not thieves; they are businessmen (and -women, for PC
completists). While some buisnessmen are thieves, buisness and thievery
are still entirely different. If one doesn't like Ticketmaster's service
charges, don't buy tickets from them. No one forces you. In some sense,
Ticketmaster is convenient because they offer telephone and internet
service, as well as outlets closer to you than the venue may be. Buying
tickets at the venue usually does not involve any service charges; that is
an option. So, go to the service-charge-free venue, buy tickets there, and
boycott Ticketmaster. The problem is on the way to being solved.
I gladly invite anyone to comment (privately) on anything above.

Not to start a brutal flame war... :)
I am not a fan of the "newer" Dream Theater cover art. I dunno I think the
older style art (Change of Seasons and before) said "Dream Theater" a
little more. For example I would condsider the old font that the band name
used to be written in to be a lot more "Dream Theateresque" then the bubble
letters on FII or the OIALT style lettering on the site and on the cover.
The band has displayed some sonic, musical, and other changes on FII and
the only change that still doesn't feel right to me is the new fonts etc...
I was hoping that OIALT would go back to the old style "Dream Theater" font
and more dream-like cover art...

A couple of weeks ago I posted a message about the availability of a Huge
Guitar Poster detailing a million chords/Keys/Variations and the like.
Anyway, I haven't got hold of such a poster yet but I did come accross a
small postscript file consisting of 7 pages of pure chords and variations
and I'd be happy to send this to whoever may be interested. I understand
that such a poster isn't the be-all and end-all of guitar playing but I'm
pretty much a novice on the guitar and I could definately learn something
from it. It's only 70K or so.

Cutting out the fat doent equal variety. The problem is you're
talking about different kinds of variety. In I&W the variety was
within the song, and had more to do with musical content (melodies,
harmony, orchestration, etc.) But the style, for the most part, is
the same. On FII the variety lies in the style of each individual
song. Which variety you prefer has to do with your own opinion.

Nothing feels quite like coming home with a new piece of electronics
equipment. I love the smell of a new VCR... :)
On the CD front, I have two recent purchases to discuss, and I encourage
jammers to invest in new music at all times. Open your minds:
Fighting Gravity - You or Someone Else: Hmmm... A Richmond, VA band
produced by John Alagia- familiar combination? Should be, as that's the
combo that launched Dave Matthews to stardom. This band has a similar feel
to their music, but are more grounded in pure pop-rock. I have a couple of
their independent CDs and some of the songs were re-recorded for this disc.
As with other times this has occurred, I like the older versions better,
but on the whole, this is a great disc. Some of the production is shoddy
(odd, since their last indie was beautifully done), and the horns and winds
are too far back. But Bend The Light, The Promise, and Walk Into My Eyes
are just great songs. DMB fans should definitely check this out.
The Gathering - Mandylion: Someone recommended this to me a LONG time ago
when I asked about bands similar to Type O. I just found this used and
picked it up and I have to say its quite good. The vocals weren't quite
what I expected, but I got used to them. I can't pick out any favorites so
far (except the instrumental; very cool), but this is a disc worth fiding
if you liked October Rust.
