So, these are the CD NOW Rock charts, which are probably based on sales... So,
DT in on the charts at numbers 11 & 20 for a CD and video (respectively) that
aren't even out yet... Man, Dream Theater fans _are_ nuts... :-)

You can simulate stacks, combos, solid state and tube amps, etc... I think it has a really good sound to it from slight fuzz all the way up to some pretty crunchy metal. I think they run well under $200 (if they still make them, I've had mine a while).

Yes, I would have a major interest in such a show. Please sign up to DJ. I think you're show would probably rule. And YtseRadio needs some more spots filled.

Yeah, I went to the show, waited around forever, almost fell asleep during their set. But I had a great time! Kings X kicked ass and it was very good that they did play for us rather than cancel.

Pat was talking about a few albums for band of the year. Let me make a couple of other suggestions. This wasn't released this year, but it is my discovery of the year: Pain Of Salvation - Entropia. Anyone who is saddened by the demise of Faith No More should check out this band. It is about the closest I can describe these guys. Get it, if u can....

What I think will be the band of the year, tho, is Ayreon - Into the electric castle. If it is as good as I hear (I haven't gotten my copy yet.) it easily makes the top of my list. This band just kicks ass.

What is this dispute about Macedonia? Everybody who was born and raised in Europe (like myself) or who at least studied European history (not you American high school kids, of course) knows that there was/is part of both Greece and former Yougoslavia that was/is called Macedonia. The map of Europe has been changing with such a speed recently that it is really useless to argue which bit belongs where and what it's name is. Can this pointless thread be put to rest at last? I liked it much better when people were flaming Derek and Kevin. At least there was some DTC. But please, don't go back to THAT tired topic which only does harm to the reputations of two very fine musicians.

    Hello y'all,

Sorry for cross posting this, but I want to get it through.

I just saw the excellent movie "Pi" tonight, and it left me thinking. Are there any other people on this list who believe--in a sense--that music can be somehow a "window to God" or some sort of spiritual tool? Please, e-mail me, I'm interested in some dialogue and perhaps setting up some sort of web site or mailing list about "musical mysticism" or whatever you want to call it. I personally find good music to be a higher force than anything but true love, which is also, in my book, connected to God somehow. I believe in God (or whatever one choses to call it/them) but I'm not a member of any religion or cult or anything.

This could be interesting if anyone wants to talk about it.

Exactly. Hey, I don't like most of Yngwie's stuff either, so I don't listen to it. It beats the hell out of dumping on the guy just because I don't like him. Opinions vary, and in the end you still have a choice as to what you're going to listen to, so if you don't like certain stuff, don't listen to it, instead of bashing some really good musicians. It's not like anyone's holding a gun to your head, forcing you to listen to stuff you don't like, is it?

However, I don't really agree with the part of needing emotion to play. I think you can play any instrument off the sheet, without having any emotion. But without emotion, I would say it's impossible to write any music yourself. Just my opinion.

As has been correctly stated earlier on this list, the original ACOS and the Eve with samples that appear on Subconscious were taken straight from the TDOE CD boot. (CD boots being much harder to come by back in those days).

AFAIK, nothing else from the Prism discs was duplicated from any existing CD boot, except for "Status Seeker" from WDATU.

Just have to send my 2p worth here. The Mask of the Red Death is such an amazing film. I first saw it when I was a little kiddy and was hooked on the Hammer/Vincent Price/Poe films ever after. Just like I was always hooked on the Errol Flynn swashbuckling stuff. It really is all my mother's fault because she allowed my sister and I to watch them (bloody good show mother dear).

As for Tourniquet, what label are they on please?

Also anybody seen the American (WB) series "The New Adventures of Robin Hood" which stars that deliciously yummy man Matthew Poretta? Ya know him of the slightly similar to Johnny P looks? Is he in any films that I can get on video?

No really it isn't. Go check the map on a microsoft net search! Also 'partha' said there was supposed to be another one in another state (liek the two places called Erie), but I didn't check out the map yet.

There are some really strange mixes of names on the map around the NY/MA/NE area, probably because that's where many of the first settlers in the Americas (including lots of British) landed. I have already seen eg., Bristol which is where I come from originally (Bristol, UK that is, on the West Coast of the UK, same latitude as London). I'm not an Historian as such (yes 'an Historian' IS the correct phrase in the UK) but I find place names in the USA quite interesting because they can give you a guide to their origination in who moved there ie., to the 'New World'.

To those of you who think this is of NDTC, just remember, Johnny P is of Italian descent, JLB is a French Canadian (I think), John Myung is oriental (I don't know which country, anyone?), Derek Sherinian's name is Armenian (I believe) so where does that leave Mike Portnoy (athough his late mother's name sounded Italian)? Kevin Moore's name sounds Celtic (possibly Irish) to me and what about Jordan Rudess?

No wonder they have such diversity as DT, it is already in their nature! A truly worldwide band .............

The OS isn't blowing the whistle. It's Navigator that can't recognize a binary file if its MIME-type is not configured in the web server. Same with Lynx. Curiously enough, Internet Explorer did the trick easily. It's the one and only reason for me to install it (temporarily though).

    Hail people...

I woke up extraordinarily early this morning and decided to write up a review for the SYMPHONY X show I saw a while back. I know how lucky I was to see them...hopefully it wasn't the last.

On August 29th I was able to see the amazing SYMPHONY X in their "FIRST EVER" live show in the US (which is actually quite ridiculous because they only live 25 minutes away from me and I've NEVER been able to see them play live until now!!!!) Anyway, my friends and I are so psyched to see them you'd think we had tickets to see God vs. Satan or something.....you could just tell this going to be amazing. Anyway, I get to the venue which is basically a bar with a small (and I mean smalllllll) stage set into the corner so its shaped like a triangle. Upon seeing where they were going to play I was shocked..given Romeo's (ahem) dimensions I thought it was going to be quite cramped (which it was) but them being such an awesome live band it didnt matter.

There were two opening bands which I'll speak very briefly of...GOTHIC KNIGHTS (their debut album on Sentinel Steel was mediocre and so was their set..I had to buy two beers cuz I was so bored...not bad, not great either) LEGEND (any band that starts of a song singing...."Canonball, canonball...CANNONBALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL..is bound to make you laugh..when you're not supposed to)..what a joke...decent 80's "true" metal..but they dedicated an ENTIRE 8-minute song to the glory of canonballs. ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........

    Now..the glory of SYMPHONY X......

I saw a good number of really obscure progressive/power metal shirts there so I realized the die-hards came from all over the eastern seaboard for this (well..maybe just as far as Brooklyn or Queens :) Also..I was wearing my prized BLIND GUARDIAN soccer jersey which I bought at the Wacken Open Air '98 Festival in Germany so that drew a LOT of questions from other fans (why is it every time I describe the festival a small crowd gathers around me :)

anyhow.....since the place was basically a bar I was able to get right in front (and I mean RIGHT IN FRONT) of the little stage. You'll see when I post the pictures...(should get them developed this weekend....along with my pics w/ ICED EARTH and SAVATAGE)

I got to watch them setup their own gear which was cool but also a reminder of how crappy the music scene is here compared to Europe or Japan. Well..finally the lights went out and the intro started.......

Smoke and Mirrors The Eyes Of Medusa Church Of The Machine (bass intro) --> Sea of Lies Dressed To Kill The Accolade (Holy shit!!! To experience this song live is unbelievable!) Through The Looking Glass Pharoah (<---YESSSSSS!!!)

encore... Candlelight Fantasia (just beautiful) Divine Wings Of Tragedy (this left me speechless...words just don't do it justice)

Now I realize that they've been criticized as being "too" technical and they'd never be able to pull off a live show and sound as good they are on record. Well..from what I experienced they DO pull it off and do it with such fluidity its scary!! They are most definitely NOT robots who just stand there and play their instruments. Romeo and Miller were always smiling when they were playing (I'm sure they werent happy with the tiny stage setup). Whenever I took my camera out for a picture they'd always pose (even though they're in the middle of an insane riff or something)...absolutely ZERO attitude. Just a bunch of great guys who are amazing players!

I wish I saw more of Pinella but his keyboards were too high and I couldnt get a good view...no matter....because its what I "heard" that really mattered. Since it was so small I could see EVERYTHING that Jason Rullo (yes he's back!) was doing...he's ten times more intricate than I thought...really mindblowing live. Russel Allen was THE consumate frontman. As well as delivering an amazing vocal performance his stage presence was great...totally into it, jumping around, interacting with tons of fans, handing out the mic, etc.. It was a great surprise to see such a technical vocalist deliver such an energetic performance.

Now .....Micahel Romeo..he's got his fair share of detractors but they can't say shit till they've seen him live. Its just unbelieveable how fluid and complex his playing is, yet still maintains a great sense of melody. I thought that at least some of his solos would not sound as great as the studio...but goddamn was I completely wrong....he's just amazing to watch live...VERY clean playing (no Yngwie slop here >:))) Seriosuly, I was watching him solo and couldnt help but clap and cheer every 10 seconds because I'd have NEVER expected him to sound SO GREAT live!!!!

The sound was fantastic..maybe because of the small venue but I heard EVERY instrument and exactly what they were doing. Every little bass fill, every harmonized leads w/ Romeo and Pinella, every ride cymbal...EVERYTHING. I couldn't have wished for more.

Like I said before....VERY friendly bunch of guys (they signed autographs, took pictures, chatted a LONG time..etc.) and just AMAZING musicians that just explode in a live setting....god my mouth was on the floor. 100 minutes never went by so fast.....

To see "The Accolade" and "Divine Wings of Tragedy" live is all one needs to experience before they die. Song seleection was great too. "Candlelight Fantasia" was a real surprise treat...I didnt expect that one....their versatility is amazing. Russel Allen shines on that one!!! SYMPHONY X ruled that night.....

I spoke with Russel (who has short hair now) afterwards and he said how much he'd love to play more in the states but its pretty difficult and their record company doesnt want to invest in tours here..damnit :(

Bottom line: See them live whenever you can, whatever the cost....its truly a surreal experience that will leave you breathless.

    cheers, Carlo (Fates)
