There are tons of Portnoys (written as Portnoi) in Russia, they are mostly
Jewish. (Portnoy means "tailor" in Russian, so go figure why Mike is
playing drums instead of tailoring.) :-)

Anyone who follows Tony Levin's road diary on his website will know that last
week he was in Nashville rehearsing with fellow Crimson members on Projekt 4
which kicks off a tour at the end of this month.
Presumably that means this week the guys will be in a studio recording LTE2
which means we'll soon have another ace album to look forward to.
Also, the ELP tribute is scheduled for release in January 1999 so I hear and
the tracklisting appears to contain some vocals from Glenn Hughes on one song
and John Wetton on two as well as JLB on two songs.

I recently looked though the video catalog at my local Blockbuster under
Music (specifically DT) and found a listing for DREAM THEATER-LIVE IN JAPAN,
MUSIC IN PROGESS, they had a separate listing for DREAM THEATER-LIVE IN
JAPAN, IMAGES & WORDS. Does anyone know anything about "Music In Progress"?
I have the I&W video and thanks to another Ytsejammer a boot of a jap.
television brodcast that has I&W and AWAKE material on it. I would like to
order the MIP video but I don't want to duplicate what I have. Can anyone

It definitely was played live because I have recording of it. It's on
the Static Progress boot from OAN. The same recording is on a different
boot as well but I can't remember the name of it. It was the one that
the extra bonus Japan tracks on Static Progress came from.

i can't find tourniquet's CDs anywhere, but fortunately you can order them
straight from the band: http://members.aol.com/~tourniqt/ Good ones i
reccommend are Psycho Surgery if you like good fast speed metal wich awesome
musicians (there's a drum solo on the instrumental track 3 and in this drum
solo ted kirkpatrick (who is conveniently the drummer) rolls with one hand
while doing other stuff with the other. woo, cool. i understand ted taught
marty friedman guitar... if someone is good enough at a SECONDARY instrument
to teach it to marty friedman, imagine how good they are at their primary :)
or Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance if you like it a little slower and heavier
but still with some fast stuff. The rest is cool too, but i'd call those
their best 2 albums, not counting the new one, Crawl to China, cuz i aint
heard it yet. the lyrics are very good, in fact i showed em to my mom and
she liked em, then i played the CD and she sorta reconsidered. parents. but
anyways, yeah. Be ready for huge words and lotsa medical terms, cuz ted's
dad is a doctor and he incorporates it plenty into his lyrics :) some song
titles from pathogenic ocular dissonance: Impending Embolism, Ruminating
Virulence, Spectrophobic Dementia, Gelatinous Tubercules of Purulent
Ossification :) But yeah. Moo.

I'll have to a little bit of checking just to make sure I'm right, but I think most of their albums were released on the Frontline/Intese label, and Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance was also released on Metal Blade. The newest one (Crawl to China) was released on a different label, but I can't really recall which one off hand (I don't have my CDs here at the moment so I can't look).

Uh, if you want to play blues or traditional hard rock (basically anything besides metal) you need to get a new amp with tubes. No distortion pedal can save that solid state Fender tone (ech). Let me know what your budget is and I can recommend something.

actually, the net "standard" for ASCII text is 80 characters, tho many ppl set-wrap to 78 or less, thus giving room for extra quotation characters. anyone who has read and follows netiquette would know this. rtfm.

Yah, I had that happen to me not too long ago, too. In a Sam Goody store of all places. There's a guy that works there who is a big prog fan. In the past when I'd gone into SG stores I'm usually in and out real quick because I can't stand being forcefed some of the stuff that the kids like these days, but that day i wandered in to be soothed by Yes' Close the the Edge. heheh. It was a shocker to say the least. We ended up BS'ing of course. The guy is a huge Dream Theater fan. I swear he has so many DT bootlegs it would make Mike Bahr cry (well, maybe not, but close). But then he's a huge Hewy Lewis and the News fan so do't be surprised to hear "The Power of Love" crankin' in there either. :)

ACOS and Eve on the original Subconscious may have been taken from the TDOE CD boot, but you can tell that it's not a digital transfer. It sounds like you copied the CD to a cassette tape first and then transferred the tape to a CD. The bass is all distorted and the high frequencies have a warbled effect.
The versions of ACOS and Eve on TDOE sound flawless. It's probably the best audience boot I've ever heard.
However, I'm sure that on the Subconscious "Gold" version, that was corrected, since I remember seeing something about Eve & ACOS being "re-sourced"

Well, I agree with you. I was once arguing with Marcelo Vanzin about this a long time ago and he insisted that it wasn't from TDoE and I kept on saying that it was from that boot, but the transfer wasn't exactly digital...
BTW, there's another way to copy the audio of a CD to a file (back in the old days when digital ripping wasn't popular, this was one method of extracting files used by some boot makers), which may have been used by Mike Bahr (just speculating here): first put the CD to play whatever you want with your CD. Then start recording with your computer to the desired file.

<<Hello, I need a recommendation on an overdrive pedal. My main setup is an Ibanez JS (dual humbucker) into a Fender M-80 (solid state). The gain on my amp is great for metal playing, but not for a milder blues tone. I know that many traditional ODs will sound like crap through a solid state amp, so does anyone have any recommendations for an effective pedal? I'm hoping for something along the lines of a Collective Soul type sound. I know that TS-9s aren't great for humbucking guitars, but I've heard good things about Danelectro pedals. Any thoughts? Sorry for the NDTC clutter...
Stodgers>>
You can try a tube simulated pedal, something like an Ibanez Tube Screamer, thas what Stevie Ray Vaughn used a lot anyway. Jim Dunlop makes a lot of really good "fuzz" based pedals, which is what all the old blues/rock guys would use (Hendrix, etc). Another pedal that is good (and if you want to shell out some cash) is the Ibanez Tube King, which has an actual tube in it, and more tone controls than the Tube Screamer, as well as more tonal possibilities (I sound like a fucking ad for this thing now, don't I?) One thing I know, in a few months I will have no need for a pedal, for I shall be the proud (and broke) owner of a Mesa Mark 4 head with a Rectifier 2x12 cab :-) Amp/tube distortion is really waaaay better than solid state or digital distortion, so I'd really recomend getting a tube-based pedal for that blues sound, or, epending on the pedal, a real good metal sound too.

Supposedly, it's the same video, because mine says so on the cover.

BTW, the upcoming Dream Theater video ("Five Years in a Livetime") will have excerpts from the Wowow/Awake video (for instance, it has "6:00" from this Japanese PPV video).
And the acoustic version of "Cover My Eyes" is incredible -- I never gave so much attention to this "alternative" :-)) song, but the acoustic rendition shed some new light on it. Amazing.
Thank you Dream Theater for sharing this gem.
