Anybody ever try mp3 to MD. I don't have a unit yet, but I plan on
    getting
one in the near future. Any tips on portable units, i.e.,

Also, how do I get the best results "taping" mp3s?

I think I want to go the Sharp route as opposed to the Sony route,
    because
I can adjust recording levels. Anyone like one brand over the other?
    If so, why?

    my
    >computer's soundcard?
Find or make a cable with a 3.5mm stereo phone plug on one end, and a pair of
RCA pin jacks one the other. Use a high quality cable with good shielding.
Keep the run as short as possible and connect from the line out jack on the
sound card directly to the inputs of the tape recorder. keep other devices out
of the signal path to avoid noise. If you're using a good quality Chromium dioxide
tape, set your levels at +3db at signal peeks. If a metal tape is used, you can get away
with a peek level of +6db without worry of tape saturation. This is assuming your using
a quality deck with the record bias optimized for the tape you're using.
If the deck you're using does not offer a user adjustable bias, just use the tape
that sounds best with your deck. This applies to both cassette and reel-to-reel.

The reason you want the levels as high as possible is to produce the best
signal to noise ratio. A low level results in tape his, while a level to high can
cause tape saturation. Either one destroys a recording.

If you plan on using a stereo VCR to record this, your results will very greatly
depending on the ALC (Automatic Level Control) of the VCR. Most will squash
the signal peeks and push up the soft passages. This takes the live right out of a
good recording. You really do need to use a recorder with user adjustable record
    levels, and signal meters.

Remember to use the "Line out" jack on the sound card, not the speaker out.
If you make your own cables, pay close attention to cable polarity and channel
orientation. The cable shield(s) will go to the plug bodies, while the center conductors
will go to the right and left signal pins.

    I hope this helps.

    Hey Jammers,

A week ago, I pre-ordered the new Livetime set. And, it is cheaper than buying it at a store even AFTER shipping.

But, it gets better. CDnow has started a new promotion that gives you a discount of at least $10 towards the purchase of anything. There is no required amount to spend.

Example: I ordered the new Fates Warning live set (how come no one has commented on it yet?) at a listing of $12.99. After the $10 discount and shipping, it comes to $5.98. A 2-CD set for $6.

Folks, go visit CDnow. If you haven't pre-ordered the new DT stuff, for some odd reason or another, go there and do it with a nice discount.

Humm... You might try Nero Burning Rom (I'm assuming you're using Windows 95/98) whose evaluation copy can be obtained at <www.ahead.de> (or, at least, could).

This is one of the best programs to burn CDs that I have used, while still being small enough for my tastes (I absolutely HATE those huge programs). If you're more of a command line person :-)), then you might want to experiment a program called Disk-At-On, written by the now-so-famous Jeff Arnold.

But if you're using Linux, then the way to go is to use cdwrite + cdda2wav. :-)

CD-R's. I just bought one. A nice HP IDE burner. Burns fine and dandy with no troubles on my 166MHz machine, BUT, I'm having a hell of a time getting quality CDDA to Wav files. Basically, what I do is shut down to a straight DOS shell and use CDDA with no jitter correction. It hauls ass with my 24x CD-ROM and makes perfect rips. I'm just having one problem: On some discs i cronically get a "Read Error: 0002" type of thing and it cancels the rip and I can never get it to work. It was rather notorious for this on my Images and Words and FII discs in particular. Is there a way to solve this (does anyone know?) Otherwise I have to rip in Winblows and I keep getting little pops and cracks and jitters due to Winblows chronic lack of self-esteem (in that it runs all these damn background checks all the time.) :P And if I try ripping from my HP Burner in DOS I get the pops and cracks anyway. :P

So, I guess my question is, does anyone know if there is a nice program that rips from Windows with minimal CPU usage at a decent speed, or what I'm doing wrong from DOS (CDDA.exe) that might keep the CD-ROM from freezing during the rip?

The page below contains five good clips from some of their stuff, which is much 'looser' and more pop-oriented than Enchant, but I think still maintains something of Enchant's overall sound - imagine a Level 42-ish kind of thing...

You know, now that I finally made tapes of my savatage albums so I could listen to them in the car, which means all the time, I have noticed that they are even more formulaic than iron maiden. But, as good as maiden is, 'tage is a lot better! Hey, if it's a GOOD formula, why not use it?

Also, everyone on this list should own Tool's aenima album. It's great! It has a lot of prog influence, too. It just really kicks ass. Plus, these guys can be really funny. In the title song about wanting the world to end: "I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied. Learn to swim." And I just found out, for anyone who cares, that track 10, which sounds like a nazi speech or something, is actually a recipe for poundcake.

Guitar FX (pedals and rack gear): As far as distortions go, I don't know much about distortion pedals (I have a triaxis, so I don't have a use for 'em) but I do have a Danelectro Cool Kat Chorus pedal which is really nice, vintage-warm sounding. If the Dan-o distortion pedals are anything like the cool kat, they sound awesome for a more vintage tone, which sounds like it's what you're going for. Just be sure to play with it before you buy it, if you can.

    > No >distortion pedal can save that solid state Fender tone (ech). well, solid state clean sounds generally aren't all that bad, and they make a decent foundation for fukking around with pedals and effects and stuff, but you're right, solid state distortion generally does blow.

As far as rack gear goes, so much depends on your budget. You can get a basic one for around 400 that will do the job, but not be brilliant, or you can shell out 1500 bucks or more and get everything PLUS the kitchen sink. I would recommend Rocktron gear if you're on more of a budget (the Replifex is really good for the money, about 550-600 new i think) as well as Alesis; Lexicon and TC Electronics for a much higher budget (more than 1000 dollars); and Eventide if money is no object (about 4000-5000 smackers right there, but it has a really badass active-matrix screen, so it's worth it!) Just don't expect the rocktron intellifex (~400) to sound as good as the Lexicon MPX-1 or TC G-Force (Both ~1500-2000)

Poe: There's a movie for Masque of the Red Death?! That is my favorite Poe story (unless you count the Simpson's version of The Raven). I now know what I must do...

Musician Bashing: I'll admit, I've done my own fair share of musician bashing. I said that Korn sucks just last night after seeing a few of their videos on MuchMusic (I think this is a fairly justified opinion, especially considering the clickety-click bass tone). One thing to keep in mind, though, is that when someone says "Ing-Vay sucks", you can just about always put the infamous "IMO" right in front of the proclamation of that musician's suckage. I don't like Yngwie, personally, I think he's an arrogant snob stuck up on his speedy classical playing and his ferrari (look at some old guitar mag ads or interviews, and you'll get the idea). The music of his I've heard sounded sterile and boring to me. His speed was very impressive, I don't think I'll ever be able to play that fast that cleanly, but it takes more than speed for me to like a piece of music. The main reason I don't like him, though, is that it just ain't my thang. I'd rather listen to The Tea Party, Dave Matthews, or Al DiMeola. My tastes tend to run more towards straight up rock and jazz than classical (I think that's a big reason I like Derek better than Kevin). Just keep in mind, it's an opinion!

Oh, yeah, all of this is an opinion.

Good night, sleep well, I'll most likely kill you in the morning.
