    hey jammers...
does anyone know if there is a European online store cos i dont want to send
my cash to the US all the time (rather expensive, so it doesnt really pay to
order, since i'd have to pay the same as if i bought it in the store here).
i think theres some german jammers here so thanks for helping (and if there
should be an austrian jammer, contact me please, but i dont think this happens)

    see ya

You could try "CDnow Europe" at http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1450242330/pagename=/RP/CDN/mainmenu.html/lclst=1 (I know that's an ugly url, but it's really not through anyone's credit account).

You can use that link, or just go to the main CDnow page http://www.cdnow.com and click on the link that says "Shipping to Europe or the Middle East?"... it's on the left side near the top of the main page.

ROFLMAO!!! Andy DeLuca?!? Hehehe... I know him pretty well... :) He's a fantastic bassist... he started as a full on metalhead like my friends and I. He was really into Metallica and Iron Maiden when he started out. He got into prog because of Rush and DT and stuff, though he hates everything after I&W. Spent about 2 years at Berklee, where he was nicknamed "Death Metal Andy" (he HATED this) because he was working on lots of Cynic, Cannibal Corpse, and Death tunes, etc. He's also (last time I heard him play) big on jazz. Been doing the Aebersold thing. He's pretty schooled... he was accepted to Miami, but I think he declined for money reasons. He's got perfect pitch, and has done the "6 hours a day, every day" practice regimen for about 7 years now (I think that's how long he's been playing bass). He's definitely a natural talent. He was the bassist in one of my high school bands, as well as someone I used to hang with up until this past summer when we got in a pretty huge fight which left him Greyhounding it back from Tampa (we made every attempt to contact him.) This dude can keep up with just about anyone on bass... he did the Racer X thing and the death metal thing. He was a big influence on me getting into jazz, as well as getting myself into a better practice schedule. He was working on a project with another temporary Berklee-ite named Santiago Dobles, who is a great guitarist (7 stringer). This project involves Sean Reinert of Cynic on drums and percussion, and probably a guest slot by Sean Malone on Stick (not a full member of the band, as he's just started his Fellowship at one of the Oregon Universities.) He also had 2 projects with Eric Rutan (Morbid Angel, etc) that I don't know what's up with. I guarantee you, DeLuca is AT LEAST as capable a bassist as Miller, in any technical aspect (you should hear him do his Wooten/Oteil stuff!) and probably moreso. I know he'd hate to have me talking about his playing, but since I think he hates me now anyways, that's life. I don't know how his writing is, because as long as I knew him, he only showed me like 2 of his own compositions (over about 5 years or so). BTW, I THINK he's 23, but I could be mistaken.

I figured I would share a bit of news with YtseJam from the King Crimson mailing list, Elephant Talk. I haven't seen this subject pop up at all here, but I figured some jammers would find it interesting. As of the present day, Bill Bruford is no longer a member of King Crimson. Why? Robert Fripp is an arrogant asshole (but he is still, IMHO, the greatest guitar player of all time.) Just figured I'd let you guys know!

I always thought that "Piece of Mind" was Iron Maiden's classic. Lots of great songs on that one. (With the exception of "Quest for Fire", which is the lyrical equivalent of Velveeta).

I just ordered Tyranny, so I will check that out later. But this is exactly what I thought when I received Superior's Younique and found that Andre Matos' only sang 10 or 20 seconds on the one of the songs toward the end. The guy absolutely rocks so you have to give him at least a little time. Maybe a chorus or something. Sure, you have to keep it within the realms of the band, but there are some badass singers out there.

If you get a badass jazz player in to play, you dont let him just play a background, you let him have a 5-10 minute solo.

    Just my thoughts.

    Hi

Since a lot of you seem to listen to the two bands mentioned in the header I was wondering if you could help me. I am thinking of buying a new prog album and have listened to clips of both SB and ET. The question I have concerns vocals. The major stumbling point as far as I'm concerned with in a prog band are the vocals. This is probably because the first prog band I liked was DT and the vocals can't get much better than that, (please don't start a flame war about vocalists). I like the instrumental stuff that I have heard from SB's latest album especially The good don't last (I think thats the name) its got a really good classical feel to it. However the only track I've heard with vocals is Cakewalk on Easy street and I'm not too keen on the vocals. So my question about SB is are all the vocals like this or only that track and also is there more instrumental work than vocals.

The ET stuff from Apocolokyntosis sounds really good. The only let down is the vocals again. The vocalist sounds like He's a really good singer, great technique and all but the tone is a bit too top end for me. It reminds me a lot of the 80's. However the instrumental stuff is really good. So what is the rest of the album like? since it is hard to tell from such small clips.

Sorry if I sound picky but sometimes you can end up paying quite a lot for a CD because not many people listen to this kind of music.

Please email me privately as not to take up jamspace.

If anyone else is interested in what people say about these bands email me and I will forward the messages to you.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm looking for advice on some of our other favorite prog bands. Specifially under the Magna Carta label. I'm wondering about World Trade, Royal Hunt, Cairo, and Altura. I have tried most of the other bands under that label, but don't necassarily like them all. I love Shadow Gallery and Magellan, like Lemur Voice, and could pass on Enchant and Tempest. If anyone is familiar enough to make some recommendations, I would really appreciate it. E-mail me privately, of course! :)

Hey, no fair. Somebody stole my brain...

    1) IME Rules. 'Scenery and Fish'. Get it.

    2) Tyranny, taken by itself, is a really good album.

    3) Here's where I start to lose it. I get Tyranny in the mail, and the first thing I see when I open it is the picture of the band. I think to myself, 'Gee, not a SINGLE guy looks any different than they did three or four years ago' and then I think 'SYMBOLISM'.

Sure enough, the music hasn't changed either, it's just lost some of its rougher edges and the production is much better. Does that mean I don't like the album?

    No!

But does it mean if the next SG album is another 'variations on a theme' I'll rush right out and get it?

    No!

I don't want 'Carved in Stone' Part III. I know it's unfair to compare bands, but let's take someone like, say, Dream Theater. Say what you want about the more commercial aspects of FII (I like them), I think a great many people would agree that 'Lines in the Sand' rules. Could you imagine LitS on Images & Words? No. Awake? Maybe, but that's stretching it. The truth is, Lits is Dream 'looser, funkier' Theater, and band far down the musical road from where they started. Where is SG's LitS?

Maybe I'm all wet. SG is obviously a band about incremental changes to their formula, not radical ones, and maybe I should just appreciate them for what they are. But dammit, I want music to surprise me a little, and with Tyranny, I knew EXACTLY what I was buying before I'd even listened to it. I don't know that that will work the third time around...

I am really happy to see popular bands with a prog influence, etc Tool even though its small, they know what people want to hear but the still play the way they want. Most people say progressive muisic is ahead of its time. My God when is it going to be time, we've been saying this since the early 70's with bands like Genesis and Yes, but Yes was playing what people are interested in even though they were progressive. I think it is very possible to do. Bands, in order to make money, have to play what the general public wants to hear, sorry fellow jammers but most of our views are outside the general public. I really think DT did this on FII, (I'm going to get hanged) it is really a nonmusician friendly album (did you ever play metropolis for someone who likes top forty, they just don't get it). Alot of the songs on there have potential for radio play, if they want to make money and keep playing. Don't get me wrong I've liked everything they have done, my favorite album is I&W but I think they have become musically better, hey its to be expected. Sorry to get off they point but in reallity all music has to progress, and if progressive music does hey maybe it will get to the top forty(evil words)
