    About Iron maiden

Joe, depends on what your other tastes are.....and knowing at least one
of them to be Savatage, I would tell you to pick up early to mid-Bruce
    Dickinson Iron Maiden......

meaning, albums like Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave
as starters.......would the rest of you concur with that 'tage
    comparison?

those are my fave maiden albums, in reverse order, anyway.....

as for the enhanced discs, i saw them listed at CD Now, though i didn't
see if they were already released or if they were now only on
    pre-order........

"Somewhere in time" and "7th son of a 7th son" are probably the most
prog-like Maiden albums, if any can be thusly described.....

the later stuff.....ummmm.....let's just say Adrian Smith left the band
after 7th son, and maiden suffered for his loss......imo, of
    course......

of course, with the vagaries of e-mail, this will probably show up on
the jam BEFORE the other two or three i just sent.....trust me, and you
know ou can, that i ain't the next dreamnday......

    Initial thoughts on Tyranny

    1) does it sound like Carved in Stone part II? musically, maybe,
although there are no annoying, and cloying acoustic interludes between
    EVERY track.....

    2) production is far better, i think.....i mean, something is far
better, because I am truly enjoying this CD, whereas Carved in Stone
remains #1 on my "Failures that I bought based on #ytsejam
recommendations" list (not that there are many, y'all just overhyped CiS
way too much)........they might have done well to beef up the guitar
parts a bit production-wise, still a little lacking for my tastes (and
    Mosh's)

the vocal harmonies might be a bit cheesy, but hey, who cares, because
I'm enoying them....the piano/acoustic tracks, some of the weaker points
on CiS, are strengths here, especially that duet with Laura
Jaeger....I'm with Graham, any onfo about her might be appreciated......

about Labrie's contribution....anyone wanna give me a track time?
    haven't heard it yet.....same goes for DC cooper's line/s

heard early buzz on tyranny saying that it sounded like they had been
listening to a bit of Savatage.....I don't really hear that influence
much, but there are bits and pieces in there that remind me of another
band that I am totally failing to come up with the name of right
    now......so it'll have to wait........

Well, I have this to say about JP: The first time I REALLY noticed JP's
skills was in "Pull Me Under" (just before the chorus, each time), and I
was amazed even there, because I have never once heard anybody play at the
speed in which he does. As a matter of fact, I didn't think it was
possible for a person to pick a guitar string that fast at all. I
understand that Derek is there on the keyboards with him in a lot of that
song, especially on the fast phrases (at first I thought it was actual
harmony on the guitar, but then realized that it was keyboard), but that
is still some of the absolute most lickety-split guitar playing I've ever
heard. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if that guitar tablature book is
    accurate, though.

On another note, this is my first post to the list (yay me), after having
read it for probably a week now. I hope to post more often.

    >shipping :) moo.

Screw you. I only got a measly $5 discount. Still got Still Life for $11
    though.

And I tried getting a second discount by just doing the quiz over again,
and it went through and gave me another $5 discount. I didnt actually go
through and all but order a CD to see if I would get it for real for a
second time, but it seems like a pretty glaring hole...I checked out the
rules and regulations, and it said that you can only have one per week, but
it still gave me a $5 discount the second time.

I have to say that Galactic Cowboys: At The End Of The Day is pretty
impressive. I really enjoy some of the vocal workand harmonies. I think
that is what makes this band. That and their variety. They play somewhat
mainstream stuff, but they always manage to add something to give a song a
    catch.

When I say mainstream, I just mean not as complicated as DT. King's X is a
very good pick for a band similar to GC.

OK. I was listening to the radio the other day at work and I had on
97.1 Extreme Radio (formerly called K-Rock) here in Detroit. Now I
don't normally listen to the radio, but seeing as I was at work (and the
store had just closed) I figure I'll change the radio station from the
crappy top 40 station to some rock (granted this is crappy rock, but
it's still better than Top 40).

Alrighty, so I'm listening to the bullshit they're playing, and they
come on and say the phone # to call for requests. I think to myself
"that would be fantastic if they'd play some DT for me!" What the hell,
I pick up the phone and dial. After 8 or 10 rings, this guy comes on
and asks me my name, where I'm calling from, and what do I want to hear.

I figure I'll make it easy on the guy. I'm not going to be picky - I'll
    settle for any song. Here's what transpired;

"Yeah, could you please play some Dream Theater for me? It doesn't
    matter which song. Thanks!"

    "No."

    "Huh?"

"Sorry dude, we're not gonna play it."

    "Really? Why not?"

"Too 80's man. Way too 80's......"

Does that just blow, or what?????? Bad enough DT doesn't get in regular
rotation...... but they won't even play it as a request! It's not like
I requested ACOS or LTL either, for God's sake!
Not to mention, obviously the guy is totally ignorant of DT, I mean DT's
first CD was '89, and their first fairly popular/recognized CD wasn't
until '92.......... so how HOW THE FUCK is that too 80's..........

Anyhow, if anybody cares to call the radio station and tell 'em what you
think (DETROIT jammers, step up here)
    the # is (313) 298-9797

Oh, and KorgX3 - why don't you make up some nasty things to say about
    the DJ's mom. ;-)

Hi jammers Well Iron Maiden really remastered their first 12 CD or so (I think). Two of them are Live. These CDs not only have two or more bonus tracks but each of them has also at least two video clips of the period the albums where released. Here in Europe they are already released.

Joe DeAngelo asked "What CD should I start with?" I'd say start from the beginning, the classics IRON MAIDEN & KILLERS. But on the other hand maybe you should start with LIVE AFTER DEATH, one the best live recording in the history of Metal (not to say of the millennium). In that album you can understand why the metal genre owns everything to bands like Maiden, Saxon, etc. (NWOBHM), and besides its one of the best of Maiden (with Bruce on Vocals).

Be well and keep jamming Mike

I dont have that Tab book and I'm just a lousy guitarist, but I am pretty sure Petrucci CAN play quartets of 16ths at 216BPM. Why? Well,if you can play at 208-210 (and it sounds clean) then its really easy to play at 216 too,I'm not that good at guitar playing but long fragments of that etude really work..both at 208 and 216,sometimes even at 220..and -if i'm not mistaken- he plays another exercise on 3-note-per string patterns -some involve string skipping as well- at 186 BPM..that sounds much faster than 16ths at 216..get it? i just wonder if he can play 32ths at 400 BPM,i wouldnt be surprised if he actually can :) (doesnt need digital delay! ;-b)

one last thing, some guy asked about Iron Maiden's albums..they are all awesome (but No Prayer For the Dying and the 2 most recent ones) but he should really check out "The Number of the Beast" and Seventh son of a Seventh son"..

    thanks, Asmodel

same here, once i had used the discount, it gave me another one ($5 this time), but once i had gotten that i couldn't get it again, so apparently if you order sumfin and use up the discount you can get another one... don't think this is how they meant it, must be a bug, but hey :) moo.

    Hi all

here are two reviews of hard-to-get but very recommendable albums that my CD dealer finally managed to track down for me.

    ATROX - Mesmerised

Take early Theatre Of Tragedy, early Celestial Season, early The 3rd And The Mortal (especially the female vocals and weird parts), add The Gathering and a dash of My Dying Bride and round everything off with a couple of acoustic tracks that didn't make the final cut of Ulver's album Kveldssanger and you've got this wonderful album by the Norwegian band ATROX. This album has it all - varied and contrasting vocal styles, atmosphere, doominess and darkness, competent musicianship, tantalizing songs. I'm not sure whether the band are still together or even when this album was released (96/97 I think). This is an almost perfect gothic/doom album that should please anybody who likes the bands mentioned above. Bug your CD dealers to find this gem. 10/10

    ACRIMONY - Tumuli Shroomaroom

Another masterpiece is added to my rapidly-growing stoner/sludge/ doom section! Originally recorded back in 96, Peaceville released this little beauty in 97 to wide critical acclaim. This album proves that the Welsh are actually capable of doing more than playing rugby and shagging sheep. The strong and obvious influences of 70s bands like Black Sabbath and Hawkwind are combined with the massive, crushing heaviness of the 90s to give an album that is very trippy, almost hypnotic and simply cool. Fuzz, distortion and wahwah pedals abound. Seeing these guys live with Electric Wizard would be almost a dream come true (although I doubt if it would be possible to get both bands organized enough for all band members to be in the same place at the same time). Pass the mushrooms. 10/10

Buy Tool albums. Buy Bill Hicks albums. Listen to them carefully - you may learn something to your advantage. And why do so many people automatically assume that the track "Die Eier von Satan" is a sample of a speech by Hitler or something similar? That's like assuming every English sample is from the Gettysburg address. Perhaps I'm just getting more and more cynical as I get older.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: The Garden Of Delight - Paradise
