Hey guys - about 2 years ago, on the jam, we set up a tape tree where
people would put some great songs on tapes and trade them with other
    jammers.

I'm trying to track down who sent me a particular tape. Unfortunately,
I've lost the tape, so I only can do this from memory.
The contents of the tape were, among other things:

Blind Guardian, The Gathering, Tiamat, Opeth, Moonspell,
    Dark Tranquility...???

That's all that comes to mind. If these bands ring a bell and you
think you might have made this tape for me way back when, please contact
me. I've got some questions for ya!

    Thanks!

    - Dr. Teeth

P.S. Isn't it time for another one of these tape trading trees???

    Well, here's what Tony says . . . (www.papabear.com/tlev.htm) . . .

    October 11th
"But now I'm at a studio nestled in a remote corner of New York State - the
autumn leaves are bright gold here, and when it's not raining, the air is
wonderfully fresh. But that's for the horses to enjoy, cause we (Liquid
Tension Experiment) are again locked in a studio without windows, writing
and recording round the clock. Ten days to write and record an album - why
do we do this to ourselves?? I'm again impressed by how many notes per
second the other guys can play! (Jordan Rudess, Mike Portnoy, John
Petrucci.) And, as in the last recording, I'm the one struggling to play
these blazing parts, and grateful that the others are patient with
me. I did, since I knew this was coming, practice my speed Stick playing a
bit, so am not hopelessly left behind this time. It's pretty cozy here -
four guys, three bedrooms - no wonder we'd just as soon rehearse till after
midnight! Quite a change from the Crimson rehearsals, which usually break by
6pm for dinner and time alone to do the many things which Crims do! I DO
have my faithful Saeco Profi machine set up here, so coffee breaks are as
they should be; with good fresh espresso."

    Hey Jammers!

Some have asked who is Laura Jaeger, who sings the duet with Mike Baker on
the song Spoken Words, off the Tyranny CD by Shadow Gallery. She's an old
friend of Gary Wehrkamp's from a while back, and I believe that Gary told
me they used to perform in a band together way back when.

This song is one of my fave tracks off Tyranny, gives me chills everytime I
    hear it.

    >From: Michael Bahr <durnik@goodnet.com> > >Tool is what Dream Theater would have been had DT started ten years later.

Hmm... I don't know if I agree with this or not. I think it would depend on whether or not the members had gotten together ten years later and formed Dream Theater or if they had been born ten years later and followed the same path that they all did. In the former case, I think they'd be a lot like they are today (maybe a little more like LTE than anything else). In the latter case, I think they'd be a lot more like Tool than they are now. But I don't think the core 'progressiveness' of the band (and by 'progressiveness', I mean the mythical, etherial stuff that makes DT what they are) would be compromised in either case.

    Just my $.02.

And I'm listening to "Show Me What You Can Do..." with Stu Hamm, Frank Gambale and Steve Smith. So here's the inevitabe comparison between SMWYCD and Vital Tech Tones: stronger performance by Smith this time around as opposed to Vital Tech Tones - he seems to be more comfortable with the improvised jazz format begun in VTT, and this time lets loose a little more. Hamm seems to be more up front than Wooten was, but I think that has a lot to do with his tone - it's a lot snappier and brighter than Wooten's. Gambale's tone has more chorus on it than Henderson's, which fills up a lot of the space on the tracks. The songs seem a little slower and laid back, and the tracks don't seem as strong as they were on VTT (maybe because they seem a little jazzier and less rocky), but the sound of the musicians seems a little better, and compensates for it. If you liked VTT, it's worth checking out.

BTW, Opeth is my favorite band and I've set up an Opeth mailing list. If you'd like to know more about them, please, feel free to check <http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito/opeth/>. It has information on how to get into the list and many links to other Opeth homepages.

Road update: Oct. 11, Milbrook NY., Out of the frying pan...

Crimson rehearsals in Nashville were interesting - but as often happens, after much making of music, we're not quite sure what we'll be playing on tour later this month. Hopefully a tape of what was played will be sent to each of us to be studied.

But now I'm at a studio nestled in a remote corner of New York State - the autumn leaves are bright gold here, and when it's not raining, the air is wonderfully fresh. But that's for the horses to enjoy, cause we (Liquid Tension Experiment) are again locked in a studio without windows, writing and recording round the clock. Ten days to write and record an album - why do we do this to ourselves?? I'm again impressed by how many notes per second the other guys can play! (Jordan Rudess, Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci.) I DO have my faithful Saeco Profi machine set up here, so coffee breaks are as they should be; with good fresh espresso.

My book went off to the printer's yesterday -- it's going to be a crunch getting it printed and shipped to Woodstock in time for first orders - perhaps unwisely I took an ad for it in Bass Player Magazine which hits the subscribers at end of October. Seemed, at the time, that I'd have it done by mid October. I'll put another excerpt up here soon.

Hey all! Long time no type! Work's been hell, but what else is new? Some general responses to 'jams of late:

Cyberduke asked: > Can someone PLEASE tell me the URL for the CDNow quiz? But > no www.cdnow.com please, the EXACT URL!

The exact URL for those who can't find the damned icon is: http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=994881857/pagename=/MN/promo.trivia /trivia_home.html

Don't forget, the trivia game is for residents of the US and Canada (with the exception of Quebec), so sorry to all our international 'jammerz.

Joe DeAngelo bitched about Detroit radio: > Bad enough DT doesn't get in regular > rotation...... but they won't even play it as a request!

Yeah, well at least they admitted they've *heard* of DT. Houston radio won't even admit that they exist. But yeah, that's a pretty lame response. Here's to CDs! ;) *Kirby downs a Bud Ice Lite! ;)

Now about MP3s.. I'm a pretty new WinAmp user, and I've got a question regarding playing multiple MP3s in a row (specifically MP3s on CDR). When the next song starts, the wave balance resets to the maximum setting. Anyone know how to fix this?

Well, that's it outta me. At least I'll make a guest appearance on this month's MFP list. ;)

I could be wrong, but I think the intent of that song is to point out that stereotype. It would be right up Tool's alley to do something like that. They're very into pointing out how most people let others do their thinking for them/make their decision for them. So they write a song that is meant to evoke images of a nazi party rally and see who notices.

Hey Man, it's OK, think of it this way:

80's = Rush, Queesnryche, Yes (Rabin), etc. 90's = Grunge, and all of the other shit you were complaining they play all of the time!

BTW I realized why I like DT, Savatage, Spock's Beard, and even Shadow Gallery (a little) so much. It's because they're a lot like what I liked most about 80's rock. The fact is (IMHO) it started in the 70's (Zep, Yes, Genesis, etc.) and continues today with the bands talked about on this list. The DJ is mistakingly referring to a style (prog) as "80's" because his feable-close-minded-brain (which BTW caters to other FCMB's) can't comprehend the concept of "progressive rock." Be happy. You are musically more intelligent, a man of taste, and above the lowly masses - elite even.
