I was looking at the liner notes for the Explorer's Club disc and it
says Labrie and Petrucci as appearing courtesy of East/West. Derek is
not listed at all. So is Derek an offical member or a hired hand? Just
wondering...
About cdnow. I noticed that when I bought Tyrrany from CDNOW through my
cdnow link on my page I got credited the 48 cents or whatever it was.
Then I noticed that the total credited was 10.48. I dont know where the
$10 credit came from. It might be a bonus for making a first sale? Or a
bug... Regardless, I then took the trivia quiz (using the hints dont
hurt) and got the $5 off. I then bought the new TSO disc for like $1.40
cdnow says the new TSO Christmas Attic is a Christmas instrumental. So
there are no vocals on this disc?

Don't open/scroll other windows. :)
Seriously, if you do something moderately graphic-intensive like opening or scrolling in a window, it takes enough bus bandwidth to interrupt the audio stream. And having a faster processor doesn't help because the limitation isn't the CPU; it's the bus that can't handle the volume of data. There really isn't any way to solve this except not doing anything else while you're playing MP3's.

umm, I hate to be the one to break this to all you guys, but most people out in the world equate metal with 80's. It's a sad fact, but a fact nonetheless. The airwaves were so saturated with certain guitar tones and screaming vocalists that people just hear that and go no further.
This is certainly not a flame; the only crime commited by those who didn't realize that this is what the world thinks is is that they have ears that are, if anything, TOO discerning. :)

Hey folks...
I'm just trying to pick up the guitar and am looking for some advice. I know this has been asked before on the list sometime, so private email would be most appreciated.
I don't have time this term for lessons, but I want to get a good start before I do get a professional teacher in a few months. So my first question is: what should I learn first? I've been working for a couple of weeks on the ultra-basics (afaik) like simple open chord changes and some scales. What else should I be doing? Speed/strength exercises? Barre chords? More scales? All of the above? I'm working with an acoustic here (Alvarez acoustic with pickups, if that's the correct description - it's a full acoustic with volume and EQ controls on the top of the body and a line out) that I borrowed from my brother. Any suggestions on where to go from here and/or some good teaching resources would be great.
Another question that I know is virtually impossible to answer is how long will it take to get at least decent on the instrument. I started playing the intro solo to Wish You Were Here by Floyd (what I'm told is an extremely easy solo) a few days ago and while I can do all the bends, slides, etc it's really not getting smooth enough to play in tempo. I know I'm gonna get the "it just takes practice" answer, but I figured I'd ask anyways. :) I can spend about an hour a day (late night) practicing. Is this enough?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Take care all!

Dr. Teeth and Stodge have both mentioned the tape tree idea on the 'jam recently. I ran one last year, and I've learned a few things about it. Firstly, it's a pain in the ass to manage :) Second, some people are going to back out without telling me about it, leaving someone short a tape or two.

Well, I'd just like to add my 2 pesos about Tool. Danny Carey (drummer) is one of my 3 favorites (along with MP and Carter Beauford, of course). He is so clean, and knows when to have control/restraint and when to wail. Half the time he is going nuts and you don't even notice because you're not expecting it from a more mainstream band (same with DMB & Beauford). Anyway, I PARTIALLY agree with the Tool/DT statement. Tool could be said to be a more mainstream DT on acid, mixed with a twisted sense of humor like Type O Negative (big fan of them, too). :) The prog element is definitely there, however (listen to 'Part of Me', along with most of the other songs on 'Opiate').
Switching topics:
John Petrucci is the man. When I started listening to DT, I had been listening to a lot of Satch, Vai, and Marty Friedman. I actually bought I&W and ACoS because the covers looked cool (I had never heard of Dream Theater before), but that's another story (anyone else have strange stories of how they found DT?).... Take the Time was the first song I really got into. The guitar/keyboard duet near the end, followed by that kick-ass groove is still one of my favorite DT moments. I was amazed by JP's versatility, switching from songs like AD to the classical part in LTL to the infamous pre-chorus piece in PMU. I love how he uses all the latest shit, like the E-Bow and 7-stringers, etc. I think it's between Petrucci and Vai for the best guitarist out there (of course, we can't forget the master of rhythm, James Hetfield - the most underrated guitarist in the world :) )...
Also, who played that version of Ytse Jam for piano? Was it some pro guy or a fan? Whoever did that is PF good....

Actually, mine's not exactly strange, though I thought it was at the time. My sister's then-fiance played me "The Big Medley" one night, because he loved how smooth it went from one song to another and he was trying to demonstrate something about the guitar work to me. He didn't have anything other than ACoS, so I didn't get to hear anything else, and he said "Well, I don't really like much of the other stuff anyway..." I didn't think of it much after that (at that point, I didn't even know the name of the group who performed it).
Until I got to college. I met my now-best friend, we hit it off, and started discussing music one day. He told me about this great band he liked to listen to called Dream Theater. It was at about that point that I told him about this experience I'd had with The Big Medley (keeping in mind I didn't know the name of the band nor did I know the title of the song), and he exclaimed, "Oh my God! That's Dream Theater!" To which I was absolutely amazed that it worked out as well as it did. Ever since that day, when I first heard other DT music, I have been a fan.

I dunno... ive never had any problem with playing mp3's while using/opening/scrolling other applications,...so there must be Cpu dependent

Picked up the new Trans-Siberian Orchestra release, "The Christmas Attic", today, partly because I love Christmas stuff and partly because the first TSO release has become one of my favorite discs of all time.
Let me tell you, folks, if you liked the first TSO release "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" -- well, you are going to love this one. Majestic sounds, moving vocal melodies, and truly amazing musicianship from the orchestra and the Savatage boys. After a first listen, I find myself compelled to repeat what I said a couple days back: you better grab your copies quick, kiddies, because this one's gonna sell out in a BIG hurry when the tunes start hitting the airwaves or the stereos of your local music stores.
I won't give a full review of the story and lyrics because it seems somewhat nonsensical considering Christmas is still two months off, but suffice it to say that it's emotional and moving and will bring a smile to the face of even cynics like me.

Liars. There's plenty of vocals. This disc completely rules, too. It's wonderfully on par with their last effort. It has all of the things you expect from Trans-Siberian Orchestra: Great orchestrations, madrigal vocals (on one song I remember), great singers (the infamous Old City Bar guy sings on at least 3 songs), same great musicians and songwriters. Called "The Christmas Attic," I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Christmas music period. I've turned alot of non-rock people onto this disc and was still surprised noone in town (save Sam Goody) was carrying it.
I was almost afraid if only one copy turned up at Hasting's when another guy and I were asking for it, I'd have to have resorted to a classic "Cabbage Patch/Tickle me Elmo" mom-fight with the guy. heheh. *pulls hair, kick, kick, kick* :) It was actually cool meeting another Sava-fan around these parts. Don't see many of those. I'm glad I didn't have to whoop his butt. :) Wouldn't that be the best primordial Christmas fight though? People beating each other for TSO CD's? it would sure be alot more sane than scratching someone into a bloody pulp for that last yodelling stuffed doll that's only going to drive you f'n nuts the moment your kid gets ahold of it. Just my thought...
