I don't think the discount is just to the return shoppers, I've played
twice, and both times I recieved the $5.00 discount. And I've spent
well over 300 dollars at CDnow.

I just put in quite a large order at CDNOW, $10 off would help quite a
bit, since the bill still has to be converted into Aus. dollars which'll
send it up even more. I anyone knows, please enlighten us!

Bruford is *not* out of Crimson. They're planning a ProJecKt 5
next year with the other 5 members of KC, but Bruford will be playing
acoustic drums with "Earthworks" - he's not _out_ of Crimson, but he may
be taking a nice leave of absence for a while.

I don't know if any of you have read any of the Rise Of The Mechanios
Bastardassassmental chronicles (via the URL in my sig), but I'm posting
because the latest chronicle has DTC. 'When Dream And Mechanios Unite' is
based on our excursion to the DT concert in June at The Forum, London. If
you are unfamiliar with Rise Of The Mechanios Bastardassassmental, I
thoroughly recommend reading the RMB FUQ or a couple of the other chronicles
to get a feel of what RMB is about, first.

Anyway, just thought I'd shamelessly plug our page.

    Hey,

Mike (no not that one) asked about dampening (sp?) base drums, I have to agree with Da CowGod, a pillow at the bottom touching both heads, failing that get a Yamaha DTX then it doesn't matter (that's what I did anyway).

Now onto DTC... I am making a "Rare DT" tape for a friend back in England, basically this is made up of all the MP3s I've gathered over the last couple of months (FII demos, TLF, Eve etc...). And as I sat there listening to Raise The Knife (I have a rough instrumental recording of it), I'm sure I remembered hearing a well recorded version with vocals, while waiting for DT to come on at the Forum in December. Does anyone have this, and/or a good version of Where Are You Now, these are two fantastic tracks, it would be a shame if they were lost forever <sniff>.

    Cheers,

Dave (a UK jammer - now in Aabama).

    Mike Homewks@Sound.Net"

I use a Remo Muffl on my bass drum (Tama Artstar II 16x22) and it works great. It works a lot like the EQ Pad in that when the kcik beater hits the drm head it allows it to resonate freely breifly before muffling it. I get a good balance between attack and that great Bohnam sound. I also use a small 1"-2" felt strip against the front head to lightly dampen the sound. This setup works great for me.

Ok, so here I write again just so you guys see that I=B4m alive. Since I = write seldomly you guys will forgive me for writing a little extra lines = ;)

    Part I - The Reviews

I got Angra - Fireworks and I didn=B4t like it at the first listen. Now i= t=B4s growing on me like all their other CDs did. I know it=B4s easy for = me to say "I would have mixed it different" but that=B4s the impression I= have, the vocals seem to not "fit" the song too well sonically, but hey,= I=B4m getting used to it. Who cares about that anyway.

Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding has been playing constantly in my = CD player. This CD just totally rocks. As odd as that may sound, I think = that everybody that likes Tool should give this CD a listen.

Marilyn Manson - I just heard the new one a couple times yesterday and I = think it rocks. Flame me all you want. I don=B4t like drugs but drugs lik= e me. Ok, so I don=B4t care for some of his stuff but it=B4s a fun CD to = listen to in the car when you=B4re driving around town bored with your fr= iends trying to find somebody to piss off. Rah. No wonder people don=B4t = believe I=B4m 28. Rah. Piss. Crap. Poop.

Part II - Iron Maiden recommendations

To the guy who was asking what CD to start with. Well, IMHO the "essential" Iron Maiden CDs are 7th Son of a 7th Son, Powe= rslave and The Number of the Beast. I also recommend Somewhere in Time, F= ear of the Dark, Live After Death (that=B4s a live one) and Piece of Mind= If you buy anything else and you don=B4t like it don=B4t blame me, so b= e warned.

    Part III - Symphony X

Everybody I=B4m showing my TiO CD is being totally blown away. I should h= ave brought tDWoT to Brazil too, dammit. So now I hear this guy Andy is playing bass for them - Ptacek, is this th= e same Andy we hung out with in Tampa? That=B4s pretty cool. So I guess h= e=B4s not moving to Florida after all.

Part IV - Angra concert in Curitiba/Brazil in the 16th

I=B4ll be there! Anybody else going? Please e-mail me!!!!

The problem you are having has more to do with your video driver than anything else. A CPU slower than 200 MHz can also add to this problem. Some video card manufacturers have already addressed this problem by not allowing the video card to dominate the PCI bus. Intergraph has video drivers for the Intense 3D that specifically address the WinAmp problem. I would think most major card manufacturers would have also dealt with this. You may want to E-mail your card manufacturer to see if they have done this. (they may not have this driver listed in the regular download area)

Another thing you could try is lowering the color depth in your display properties.

I have seen/heard this problem with several machines. I have also seen/heard just as many that don't have this problem. It just depends on the hardware used and driver versions. Good luck.

Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 13:58:07 -0400 From: Ivan Navarro <inavarro@mdo.net> To: DT Mailing List <ytsejam@ax.com> Subject: Too 80's - What does it mean? Message-ID: <3624E62F.5432F551@mdo.net>

I post this to stir the pot, and hopefully not create a "thread from hell"

This thread has aroused my curiosity, having had my own musical tastes shaped largely by the music of the late 70's and the 80's as was the members' of DT. What are your opinions as to how 80's rock is defined? If DT is to be labeled as "too 80's," it would be interesting to find out what exactly "80's" means. Believe me that DJ in Detroit is far from being alone in his opinion (granted these are people whose opinion means little to me and I'm sure many of you either). Case in point, while I was in NYC for DT at Irving Plaza I was with some friends including Julie Slater of K-Rock and when I asked her opinion of DT guess what she said - you got it, "Too 80's!"

As I see it, the 80's included many different styles of music, just as there are now, also some these styles held their popularity during different parts of the 80's. Off the top of my head I can think of: Disco, Dance, New Wave, New Age, Heavy Metal, Progressive, AOR, Glam. Of course there are also other categories such as pop, folk, country and timeless music such as jazz and classical which I don't think are relevant for this discussion.

To clarify: Disco - Bee Gees - Nuff said Dance - Madonna, Alisha etc. New Wave - Blondie, Depeche Mode, New Order, etc. New Age - Andreas Vollenweider (sp?), Shadowfax Heavy Metal - AC/DC, Judas Priest, UFO, Black Sabbath Progressive - Rush, Zappa, Dixie Dregs, Queesnryche AOR - Stones, Billy Joel, Bob Seger Glam - Kiss, Warrant, Poison, Twisted Sister, Quite Riot

Feel free to add categories and bands. Forgive me if I missed some important bands or if some bands crossover genres or are miscategorized as I am definitely winging it (Oh yeah let's not forget Winger). My point is that any of these above categories and bands could be labeled as "80's" so what makes a band sound "too 80's."

IMHO, "80's" in the context of "too 80's" equals "Glam" - That style of hard rock that was all about "the look" with loud guitars and high vocals.

Now here is where I slip into my asbestos suit before I command the 10,000 monkeys in my basement to type: If you 1) stripped away the visual aspect and 2) are too ignorant or too lazy and/or impatient to listen a little deeper into the music and the lyrics, then I believe a case could be made for comparing DT to some Glam. I don't mean this in a negative way or putting DT in the category of Glam. I think that Glam bands and DT where likely influenced by the some of the same music which could explain why I personally can't deny that I hear some similarities.

Personally, I don't think DT is too 80's, I think they're just 80's enough! There, I've said it, now do as you will with me!

    I-Man

P.S. What does 80's mean to you? And, would you say DT cannot possibly fall into that description?
