You know, over the years I've tried all kinds of shit for
dampening my kick drum. I tried muffle rings but,
unfortunately, they do exactly that, muffle. Not dampen.
Any attack I had gotten out of my kick was instantly
transformed into mush. Especially when playing with others,
The punch just gets lost. I used a pillow for a number of
years, but then on a lark, I stuffed my old Masters of
the Universe sleeping bag in there. This has been the
best solution I've come up with thus far. I haven't tried
non Masters of the Universe sleeping bags, so I'm not
sure if they'll work as well. :)

My only problem with these things is that they work really
well only when you're playing fairly aggressively. Try
playing something (like...Take Five, for example) that
requires different intensities on the kick and the softer
notes get lost. I'm going to cruise home and try Dan's
         twisted t-shirt method.

         Two posts. Fuck yeah.

Unless of course, you have a real good, original story. (i.e. something
other than hearing PMU on the radio in '92). Just a suggestion.

I was wondering if any of the guitarists on here had the 2120 and would
be willing to tell me the parameters for some of the artist presets
since I have the 2112 and was interested in the presets but I don't want
to pay about =A3100 to get the upgrade chip.

I don't think that was the question. Yeah, you're going to get something every time you 'play' the trivia thing, but if I'm someone who is continually raking CDNow over the coals (and I am) I'm wondering if I'll ever get more than the $5 discount. Having said that, the first time I played, I got $10 off, and the second time, I got $5. Think I'll get $5 off from here on out? I don't know...

P.S., I got the Hamm/Gambale/Smith album for a total of $7.98. It's a great album - more jazzy than I'm used to, but Gambale seems to mix it up a bit - one moment he sounds like he's still playing with Chick Corea and the next he sounds like Satch.

But I got it for Hamm anyway, who is great on it. Did any other Hamm fan notice that the extended solo in the middle of 'Wrong and Strong' is really one of the tunes from his second solo album 'Kings of Sleep'? THAT kind of honked me off, but I can forgive the guy since he's my favorite and if there was no Stu I'd have to become a huge Wooten fan, and as much as I like Victor, he's SO good that he sometimes wanders into wankerville. How's that for flamebait?

Hmmm.... How I was turned on to Dream Theater...

OK, I was dating this girl about four and a half years ago and we were absolutely crazy about each other MOST of the time...the other half of the time she was either sucking up my free time (MAN'S PERSONAL TIME:== BITCH LEAVE ME ALONE - not to any female jammerz trying to understand the complex inner
workings of a man's psychi) or hitting on every other guy in sight. To make a long story short, I joined the Marine Corps and we broke up. The guy she rebounded onto looked/talked/acted/had comparable sense of humor to Bob Saggat. Eeeesh. 'Nuff sed.
Where does DT come in, you are wondering?
Well, after boot camp, we start talking and have all these happy wonderful feelings for each other and all that shit, so I come over and she's playing DT - who Bob Saggat introduced her to. I don't notice DT cuz I'm in the process of getting down her pants (female jammerz - this is male insight
#2...pussy takes preferrence over music any day.)
So Bob Saggat finds out and flips.
And the two get engaged like every other couple that gets pumped out of my college, and set a date. (logical thing to do after she cheats on you, huh?)
Enter DT. At this time, yer ol' pal Looeee is wondering how he can dazzle the socks off this chick and cause her to leave Bob for good. I pick up the DT CD that I vaguely recall hearing that night, a guitar, an amp, the tab to I&W, and decide to learn guitar and master every song on the album within
8 days - the day they were getting married.

I failed, they got married, and I was left with a crappy Yamaha guitar.

However....they are now miserable, I got a chick with WAY bigger bazoombas, and I got irreversibly hooked on DT as a result. Still haven't "mastered" even one of their songs (although others tell me I'm pretty damn good), but I have fun trying.
    Life kicks ass.
    Sorry to bore y'all.

I think that's pretty much correct. Although the "too 80's" label is
usually directed at glam, I think it also includes most of the 80's
    metal.

I've interogated some people who don't like DT, and usually it's the
vocals which immeadiatly put them into the "oh no, it's too 80's"
mode. (We're talking about the high pitch and general style). Any
amount of lead guitar also tends to put them in this mode.

I think it's all a reaction to the excess of guitar gods and glam (ala
Poison) that occured in the 80's and early 90's. It just got too big
to be "cool" anymore. Plus you had all of the complaints that it was
too technical, you can't dance to it, it's not "happy" music, the big
hair and make-up look ridiculus, etc. Rap took over, and then mutated
into hip-hop (for all of those people who wanted to dance). And then
grunge arose for those who wanted the rock sound, but didn't want the
    80's stigma.

It's just the same thing that happened when disco ruled the world in
the 70's/early 80's. Everyone got sick of it, and for many years,
anything that resembled disco was looked down upon. Punk took over,
and then mutated (and split) into "New Wave" and "speed" metal. Speed
metal pretty much combined again with classic rock, metal and glam,
and we then have what some people refer to as "too 80's". So really DT
is as 80's as it gets. They are a combination of all the rock styles
that are called "too 80's". (Classic rock, speed metal, and a little
    glam).

But hey, look at disco. It came back, and so will metal. DT can make
big money sometime around 2010, doing a progressive metal nastalgia
    tour. ;o)

            Hi, All.

Well, after reading many and many 'jams, I'm now motivated to
learn to play an instrument. I'd like to learn how to play a guitar.

I'm not pretentious to be a super shredder (to be honest, I don't
like most of the shredding I know, with some notable exceptions like
Liquid Tension Experiment, but other than that...). I just want to focus
on some music that I find beautiful, like some Dream Theater songs, the
acoustic passages from the Opeth albums, some things Steve Howe has
composed and some Baroque music (for instance, Bach's lute concertos).

Of course, before I start specializing on some techniques, I'll
need to learn the basics. Given my preferences, do you have any
recommendations? Any books that will give me a solid introduction to the
instrument (and that I should buy)? Any hints on how to choose a guitar??
I think that I'll start with an acoustic guitar, since it's cheaper and
    doesn't need many accessories.

Please, keep in mind that I know next to nothing about music. I'd
even dare to say that the most I know about music is how to press the
"Play" button of my CD player. :-)

Thank you for any recommendations, Roger...

OK, I apologize for blatantly baiting that last one. It was something that just sprung full forth in my mind and I wanted to blurt out to see what the hardcore DT contingent would think.

Would DT indeed have been more like Tool in another day and age? Perhaps. Tool never impressed me early on... Undertow I didn't like, and then of course when it caught on, every Johnny Bandwagon bought Opiate and played it, and I didn't like that either. It was not until AEnima that they finally made an album that I would consider as having conceptual cohesion... and the vast improvement in the bass playing and the lyric work was what finally got me thinking, "YES, these guys are FINALLY doing something somewhat like prog. Now I have something to listen to until DT's next album."

But obviously this opinion isn't common nor even accepted CW... the Tool fans by and large defend Tool's earlier work, and DT fans that don't like Tool definitely aren't about to give AEnima a listen (not that they don't hear Stinkfist, Eulogy, H, 46+2, and AEnema on the radio every day) so it's a question that will remain largely unanswered.

On to a similar subject with a different band: Galactic Cowboys. I've heard ATEOTD about a hundred times now. They REALLY don't know what the word "subtle" means. Initially I liked the album a great deal... but now it's... well, too obvious. Not rewarding. Just a big whine. I dunno. I was expecting more. It's a good thing the MF suite SOUNDS so good, or I'd really be let down. Look, GC, we know you got shafted by Geffen. Enough already... write about something else. Opinions, anyone?

sometimes, at least for me, if I'm learning a song with some odd stuff in it, or perhaps its an original, I tend to learn the riff or chord progression and get the "feel" of it, and not worry about counting over and over in my head "one two three four five, one two three four, etc). Although, sometimes its really a necesity that you do count (in one of my band's originals the riff alternates 4/4 and 9/8, and you REALLY have to count the 9/8, you cant feel it, at least I cant yet, its a new song ;-) Anyway, on the 7 string, if you are wanting to learn more Jazz 7 string style (rather than shred or metal), I suggest tuneing your 7th string to a low A, which is what most Jazz 7 strign players do. I dont know the exact reason for this, but I believe its because you have the bass strings in 5ths now (A and E) as opposed to 4ths (B and E) which (I'm guessing) makes it easier to play bass type stuff on. I know a lot a Jazz players will use something like a .080 for the low A, but then again, most of them use .011 sets or even 12's. If you';re the one to use lighter sets (.010 or .009 sets) you'd prolly want to try a .060 if you are planing to tune down to A, otherwise, a .056 is what most guitarists use for the low B.

my story aint that interesting (neither is my literary style) but here goes: last summer (97) i was listening to the radio, 94.1 WJJO, Madison's Solid Rock, and there were two songs that whenever i heard i turned the stereo up cuz i absolutely LOVED them: Burning My Soul and Trust or something by Megadeth. I actually thot that Trust was better, and originally thot Trust was by Dream Theater, and was dissapointed when i did some research (downloaded the official songbook) and didn't find that song anywhere. So I go to the store to see if they carry any Dream Theater or Dream Theatre, something, i knew the name, and lo and behold they don't , but , neverfear! i am a member of BMG music club! so i decide to purchase Images And Words and Awake hoping that BMS was on there (dont even ask why i didn't know it wasnt despite already checking out the songbook....) So i receive them, dont think much, you know i didn't notice any of the musicianship being only 14 and having only mainstream exposure up to that point. Actually if it weren't for Dream Theater, Bush and Nirvana, arguably (or whatever) similar bands, would still be my faves...... but i got them and thot the transition from The Mirror to Lie was cool, and kinda listened to some parts, initially liking Pull Me Under and other such songs. Then one day I come racing down to the bus stop with a revelatious (don king version of "revelation-like") expression and continue to exclaim "I LOVE DREAM THEATER!" it just happened, the songs had sunk in! and after many moons, i gave other songs a chance, eventually realizing i'd love any song they made , so i'd listen to all of them knowin i'd like em soon enough and damn , when i noticed BMG got Falling Into Infinity in stock, i was so bleepin excited, and when i received it i almost had cardiacal malfunctions but haha~! i had heard none of the stuff about it so i developed my own opinions of the songs and loved em all!!!!

    anyway, there you go.....
