    Hey Partha, what's up bud?

    > about Labrie's contribution....anyone wanna give me a track time?
    > haven't heard it yet.....

I know what you mean. It's hard to catch at first, because the
transition from Baker to LaBrie is really quick and smooth.

    Here's the scoop, though.

Here's the lines that Baker/LaBrie sing in track 8:

    Baker: (at approx. 2:05)
    "My father's final moments
And I was there to catch his last breath
     He spoke so eloquently
     Said-"

    LaBrie: (at approx. 2:21)
"Listen boy the way it goes is solely
Up to you and you alone
To live your life in strength that's been passed on
     Blood to blood"

and that's it for LaBrie's lines.

    > same goes for DC cooper's line/s

    This one is easier.
In track 11, the first spoken words (at approx. 27 seconds into the
    song) are Cooper.
It starts off "Good day my fellow citizens...."

    > heard early buzz on tyranny saying that it sounded like they had been
    > listening to a bit of Savatage.....I don't really hear that influence
    > much,

I do, to a certain extent. They don't sound LIKE Savatage per say, but
    I think there's a bit of Sava
influence as far as the "symphonic" quality that Tyranny has. And, as
you know Partha - I consider that to be a good thing! :-)

    > but there are bits and pieces in there that remind me of another
    > band that I am totally failing to come up with the name of right
    > now......so it'll have to wait........

Did you think of that band yet?

That was me, back before my ISP *craaaaaashed* and lost all my web space. It was "Music that Kicks Ass" and was fun. Now I just play stuff on ytseradio (or did before my CD-ROM broke).

Anyway, "No Pain, No Gain" was off Buckshot LeFonque's self-titled album. Everyone here should check out Buckshot if you haven't already. They have two albums of cool hiphop jazz, and they're damn funky.

At the risk of being mistaken for a hootenany, yes, disco returned. But I'm talking about San Francisco here. And I'm talking live music mainly. But on the radio, there must be at least five FM stations playing "classic" disco. There's only 1 station playing classic rock, (and the occasional DT song).

Lot's of the clubs in SF have live bands where they all dress up in polyester, bell bottoms, big afros and play disco all night. This has been going on for several years, so I thought it was fairly widespread. All of the old big name disco groups are doing nostalgia tours right now too.

P.S. I'm pretty diverse musically, but I don't own any disco recordings!

    Hi all!

OK, I know there were many same posts like this but...:

A friend who helped me getting my Budapest DT ticket via his Hungarian friend, after hearing from me all that talk 'n whows 'n heil DT 'n best band 'n stuff, expressed desire to listen some DT! So he asked me to tape him 1 tape. Let's say it is 90 minutes one. Just for your info, he isn't AT ALL prog/rock fan. He likes techno, he liked my Jean Michel Jarre tapes, he used to listen Depeche Mode. I don't know the rest of his background but he is around 25. You'll be right if you think he might like easier tunes but here's what I noticed while listening DT having him on mind: While AD, Surrounded and similar stuff WILL make their final way to that tape, why not putting some more progish stuff? Me being a non metal head, PMU is not my fave DT song, but when I listened it, the singing is quite melodic. Yeah, it can easily might be interpreted as stupid loud song by the rest of the world, but if listening closely - that's not the case! Also other DT stuff - although the rock quite a bit, the music is never too loud or straight metal and vocals are ALWAYS quite melodic. So even Metropolis is possible to find its way on the tape! :) TOT is a must have I guess!

Cutting the philosophy and I'll appreciate some suggestions. But not too many I hope. :) That was quite thankful from my side, wasn't it? ;)

So, let's start converting people! :)

"And now for something completely different!"

I would appreciate an advice from some guys who might work part time job in radio station. Me and my friend, having ALOT music in our homes and knowing quite much infos + older days me copying and collecting all music articles/reviews I could find = we want to start making music program in which we will play music we like! It means HUGE variety if stuff, from Jean Michel Jarre to Frank Zappa, from blues to DT ... All kinds of quality stuff, heh! :)

BUT: - I'm still a student on the most difficult university (we both are) in my country (remember, it was the almighty Macedonia ;) so I wonder how much time will take 1 show per week. I guess preparations should be made 'n stuff.

    - We don't expect to open a Swiss account (read "getting paid a lot"), actually the situation with this stuff is quite tricky here. We just want to share our music with the masses, noticing all this ignorance about good music and massive illusions that "Take That" are best band and quite possibly only music band in the world EVER!

Someone must take care of the youngsters nowadays, otherwise I seriously think that all the past and present good music will disappear being not wide popular and known. -- Later, CyberDuke

    > >Hey, I was just curious how everyone here initially heard of Dream >Theater. I >can remember my first time (uh...). I'd like to hear everyone's >stories about >their introduction to DT. > I first heard of them when they were mentioned in the "thanks to.." listing in Fates Warning's "No Exit" album. The name caught my attention. As it turned out, I had a pen pal at the time living in New York who was taking guitar lessons from John Petrucci. I asked him about DT and he sent me a dubbed copy of "When Dream And Day Unite." It has quite a bit of playing time in my walkman! This was around 1990 or 1991. So then I saw "Images and Words" in the store a year or so later, thought the cover was cool, and bought it without hearing anything off of it. It was one of the few albums I've bought which required no growing time whatsoever. And here I am today, a prog addict!

    > > >Hey everyone, > >Is the Laser's Edge still in business? My bookmark to the website >doesn't seem to work. Do they have a new web address? > >Thanks, BH > > I just ordered from the guy a couple months ago, so as far as I know he's still in business. As far as I know the web address is:

    http://www.jersey.net/~lasercd

Or you can e-mail him at:

    lasercd@aol.com

However, I would NOT recommend ordering from him. While he's got the best prices around, he doesn't seem to keep much in stock and if he's out of something he doesn't really bother to reorder. Plus, he seems to be kind of rude. And what's with the $75 minimum order if you want to use a credit card?! I'd try Dream Disc.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids......

I-Man wants to know, among other things: >P.S. What does 80's mean to you? And, would you say DT cannot possibly >fall into that description?

To me the 80's means "synths, and lots of 'em". :) The layered-synth sound is what made so much of the music of the 80's so great, as far as I'm concerned. More than that, though, the music of the 80's was FUN. *That* is what I miss the most about today's music; very little of it is uplifting or just done for the pure hell of it, which is why I get such a kick out of projects like Liquid Tension Experiment or Explorers Club. Where's the FUN?

On another note, Mats wants to know: >Excuse my ignorance but what the hell is this great Trans Siberian >Orchestra that I keep hearing about? I haven't really been able to put >two and two together from the disparate posts I've read through the >years. I usually do, though.

Woops, sorry. Trans-Siberian Orchestra is a side project featuring the members of Savatage, keyboardist Robert Kinkel, lyricist and writer Paul O'Neill (who writes much of Savatage's lyrics and poetry), a full orchestra, and a whole host of guest vocal performers including a choir.

The first two TSO releases have been Christmas-themed and have showcased an "orchestral rock opera" sort of approach to traditional Christmas and classical melodies, with plenty of original music thrown into the mix. They also feature well-written and emotional stories, with the full story, poetry, and lyrics included.

The next TSO disc, however, will deep-six the Christmas motif and feature a similar sonic approach to classical themes and music; it'll be called "Beethoven's Last Night" and will have its own story (its direction can be guessed without too much trouble).

The TSO releases are well worth picking up if you like 1) good music 2) Christmas music 3) new approaches to classical and/or Christmas tunes 4) intricate and emotionally written concept stories, or any of the 4. :)

here's how i got into DT. back in late 92 or early 93 i saw the video for pull me under on MTV at like 2 in the morning. i think it was on headbangers ball or somethin like that. i really liked the song. by the next morning i had completely forgotten about it. well, about 6-7 months later i was sitting in a friends car in front of my highschool waiting for school to start and he said he had a really cool tape he wanted me to hear. lo and behold, it was images and words. i remebered them from headbangers ball and decided i would get the cd. well i forgot again. about another 8-10 months later i was at my guitar lesson and my teacher had just gotten a new stereo system and he put a cd to let me hear how the whole thing sounded. once again, it was images and words. this time i was determined to get the cd. well, about 3 days later i was perusing the cds at the local pawn shop. and there it was. images and words. i instantly snatched it up and i have been salivating over these guys ever since.

    Hey -

Well, I must say that my fruitless search the other day for the new TSO album was not a total waste. I did pick up a couple of brand new CD's: Judas Priest "98 Live Meltdown" 2 CD Set and the new Sepultura "Against".

As for the Priest album, hold onto your butts, kiddies, this album KICKS ASS! 2 hours of pure adrenalized METAL! Ripper Owens sounds incredible, the band shreds it up, and the track listing is to die for. Fans of true metal, buy this album!

As for the Sepultura, I have always been a HUGE fan of theirs through the years (Chaos A.D. was BRILLIANT), but I personally thought that "Roots" sucked. Different and bold, but just not my thing, I guess. Well, as bad as I thought "Roots" was, I think that (so far) "Against" may be worse. Granted, I am only 1 and a half songs into it (cuz I just couldn't take it anymore), but wow... it's like bad punk or something. I dunno... maybe I'm just getting too old for this shit. ;-)

Anyway, I ended up having to special order the TSO, goddammit. From preliminary Jam reports, I think that this album is gonna be awesome.... if I ever get a hold of a copy. :-P

That's it for now. Take care, gang...... Matt T.

PS: I asked this before, but so far, no responses. Does anyone know who's selling the Japanese Fates Warning "Still Life" with the bonus track? Thanks.

Someone enquired about bass drum muffling.

If you 're a dedicated Remo user, try Power Stroke 3 heads, these are nice and punchy but..........the ultimate sound are the Aquarian Impact 1 or 2 for the batter head and Aquarian Regulator for the ressonant head. NO MUFFLING REQUIRED!!!!!!!! Both brands have a built-in muffling ring, the Remo has a mylar ring and the Aquarian's use a felt ring. This gives the Remo a bit more mid-range tone. The Aquarian's retain the punch plus a lower end tone Both brands come with a reinforcement patch that adds more attack. (the use of these patches are recommended, unless you are a light player) The down side to these heads are that they are expensive.

I am not a drummer myself, but have had the oppertunity to assist drum techs, on occasion. One in particular used what I believe was called a KlikPad, I don't remember who made it..but it was a small, squarish piece of adhesive backed hard plastic, used much in the same way as felt or moleskin placed where the mallet strikes the head. It does triple duty:

it dampens the kick drum it extends the head life and, when used with a wood mallet, adds an interesting "click" to the kick drums sound spectrum

The sound man loved this device! It added a whole new dimension to the kick's sound as the sound man could tailor the kick's sound with the EQ, thereby produces different sounds for different songs.

Now, this was several years ago, so I have no idea if it's still available..

Now that orders have slowed down, Bernd is working out a deal with some prog specialists (KotR at least, and perhaps others) to offer the CD along with a signed band photo at no extra charge.

For the 30 or so people who ordered the CD through me, the CDs were mailed quite some time ago now and should have been received (and indeed I've only heard of one problem with the mailing). The order-status page is still available, however, at www.crl.com/~vanyel/younique.html.
