Hello Ytsejammers!
It's time for another survey! Often questions arise on the ytsejam
such as "what other recordings should I pick up?" or "what's the best
Iron Maiden to get?". To answer these questions, it's time for a
survey by and for ytsejammers. To participate in the survey, send a
list of 20 of your favorite, all-time classic recordings. These should
be recordings that you would call "the best of genre", "desert island
collection" or "10 out of 10's". Real high quality stuff! Any
recording can be listed. It doesn't have to be progressive metal or
even rock. The survey will run until Oct. 31, 1998. Results will be
posted on the ytsejam and on a DT website.

Each recording will get one point.
List each recording only once.
Order of the list does not matter.

Actually, I have mine. Continuing in the theme of Powermad1998 in general,
the mailing got screwed up, so some people have theirs already, and some
won't get it for another week or more. If anybody really wants to know the
story, email me, and I'll tell you.
They do exist, though, and it's a pretty decent compilation. If you don't
see it in another week or so, THEN let Keith have it. :)
I don't think he's trying to scam people - I've said it before - but he
certainly screwed this up.

Fudgejammers, Yesterday I got my elegant hands on Once in a Livetime. Guys, if this cd sucked, I would tell you. This cd rocks with a flow. Derek really makes this album interesting. All you people will smile when you hear the new arrangements. The only question is "What are they going to do with LaBrie"? He is so good he sucks sometimes. On the studio version of "Take Away my Pain", I don't believe him. He doesn't sound believable when he sings TAmP. This is what makes a great singer from a good one. During Take the Time, he still does that annoying "come on, come on" trying to urge the audience to sing along. If he had control of the audience, he could stop doing that. I've come to the conclusion that Derek fits in really well. For an example of a guitarist who is godd but plays with no feeling and respect for the original music, look to TRACY G. His playing on Dio's "Inferno" slobs the knob. Tracy G needs to bend over and get poked for embarassing Dio. The G certainly does not stand for guitar. But you've got to hand it to Tracy G for making it to Dio's band! My recomendations for eclectic jammers this month is: - HELLOWEEN " Better than Raw" this cd will please people who love double bass drumming, harmony guitar solos, heavy intelligent riffing, clever ideas, classical ideas and Helloween. - YNGWIE JOHANN MALMSTEEN " Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor" no drums here. the guitar is in the spirit of the violin. some ideas are recycled but work very well. for the people that flame Yngwie, " you guys always say the same things about his personality. stop jumping on the bandwagon and create your own original ideas. remember, whenever you critique someones persona, its probably true about you". The girls will melt if you play this while eating dinner or making love. Just ask my penis.

Just for everyone's information, the Powermad cds DO exist. I have seen a few copies with my own eyes. Keith "spellchecker" Menser may be slow and dull- witted, but he *IS* sending out the cds. Supposedly he paid some guy to do a 5th class (something like that) postal order, and the guy took the money. Anyway, one of these days, you WILL get your discs. I don't have mine, but I have at least SEEN them and can verify their existance.

The following are some short reviews of my recent purchases and recommendations to DT fans: Empty Tremor 'Apocolokyntosys' Arkhe 'Arkhe' Black Jester 'Welcome to the Moonlight Circus'
All three of these Italian progmetal bands would receive favorable reviews from the typical DT fan. Empty Tremor and Arkhe receive high praise. Both of these bands cite DT and members thereof as a source of inspiration. Musicianship is excellent. All feature strong keys along with skilled axe. All are available through Knights of the Round. --------------------------- Hydrotoxin 'Oceans'
This German band is exceptional progmetal. Like the Italian bands above, this band displays very high musicianship, featuring both strong keys & axe. I might change vocalists, but this may just be a matter of taste. Also features interesting cover art. This CD may be hard to obtain from any US/Canadian sources. Although it's listed in the Laser's Edge catalog, it was 'Out of Stock' the times I inquired. The dude from Knights of the Round, said he'd heard the CD & thought it exceptional as well, although they do not carry it. SO I tried a web search and found it at several European online sites. I'd recommend the Dutch Rockhouse site. They had both good prices and service. I was able to purchase my copy for under US$25, including shipping, and it arrived within ~week of purchase. The CD price at all other sites was significantly higher, as was shipping costs. --------------------------- Eternity X 'The Edge'
This is a must if you like concept prog/progmetal. This one ranks with QR's 'Operation: Mindcrime' and Marillion's Fish-era 'Misplaced Childhood' both of which may be listed as influences, along with Peter Gabriel-era Genesis circa 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'. The musicianship bleeds great instrumental work (axe & keys) around great lyrics featuring split-personality lead vocals. It even features a snippet of 'O Fortuna' from Orff's 'Carmina Burana.' Buy this CD: You won't be sorry you did. --------------------------- Shadow Gallery 'Tyranny'
The CD many of us have been waiting for. And it certainly doesn't disappoint. It's a some-what loosely knit concept album with more great music & lyrics from the boys. Equals and surpasses SG's 'Carved in Stone'. DT's JL has featured vox on one number while Royal Hunt's DC Cooper also appears on the CD. In my opinion, another MUST BUY. And kudos to Carol 'Coldfire' for making the Special Thanks list. ---------------------------
Angra 'Holy Live' This 30+ minute EP features excellent live renditions from both 'Angels Cry' & 'Holy Land'. I know it's been out for a while, but if you like Angra, you'll want to get this CD. --------------------------- Digital Ruin 'Listen' Heaven's Cry 'Food for Thought Substitute'
If you prefer Voivod & Stabbing Westward over Shadow Gallery & Symphony X, you'll want these CD's. They have a more industrial, experimental progmetal sound than I'd personally choose, although they have their own high points. Digital Ruin , IMHO, is better than Heaven's Cry. I'd much prefer Fates Warning, with whom some might compare these bands.

Hello, Well, I went to Boston for a couple days this week and you guys loaded my mailbox with Jams. At the risk of seeming flip, they all were about Tool and CD-Rs so I just tossed em, so forgive me if I tread on covered ground. On Tuesday, October 13, I yet again was able to see the best live act in existence: Cowboy Mouth. They played the Paradise in Boston and put on a helluva show. And in a freak course of events, the opening act was another of my favorites, Fighting Gravity. I left the Paradise at 12:30am soaked through with sweat from dancing like the rhythm-deficient white boy that I am. I also managed to get a t-shirt and get all four members of the Mouth to sign it! Can I get a "woo-hoo!"? Yeah, I didn't think so. But seriously, not only did these guys stay around to hang out after, when I told them I went to shows, they seemed interested (especially since the shows I saw before this were in SC). And when they got done signing and I said thanks, get this: every one of them looked up at me, made eye contact as they shook my hand and said thank you right back. That, my friends, is the textbook procedure on getting a fan for life. New CD: Brian Setzer Orchestra, The Dirty Boogie. Haven't gotten through the whole thing yet, but I don't feel premature in saying it rocks. There are some terrific covers on here (Sleepwalk, Rock This Town, and of course: Jump, Jive an' Wail) and the presence of Gwen Stefani on one song isn't all that horrific. But you can tell this is a band fronted by a guitar player as Setzer's axe is so far up in the mix. The horns often sound a bit thin, but not so bad as to sound like synths. All in all, I highly recommend.

I'm pretty sure that since Kevin Moore left after Awake, which I believe was the first in a multi-album deal, Derek joined the band without being under contract. Its Dream Theater that is under contract, not the individual band members. This is guessing though...

Opening act was the acoustuic guitar duo - VLatko Stefanovski & Miroslav Tadik playing material from their project recently released in the States and now in Macedonia called "Krushevo". Album contains covers of old Macedonian traditional folklore songs, played by these 2 guitar virtuosos.
Anyone who's into ethno/spanish/oriental music - definilet chek otu this album! It's just awesome. Remember Paco De Lucia/Al DiMeola/John McLaughlin trio touring? Well this is similar type of music but much more emotional stuff. The Skopje JAZZ Festival in Macedonia this evening started!!! Woohoo! For all interested in the contnets go to: http://www.sjf.unet.com.mk/
Opening act was the acoustuic guitar duo - VLatko Stefanovski & Miroslav Tadik playing material from their project recently released in the States and now in Macedonia called "Krushevo". Album contains covers of old Macedonian traditional folklore songs, played by these 2 guitar virtuosos.
Anyone who's into ethno/spanish/oriental music - definilet chek otu this album! It's just awesome. Remember Paco De Lucia/Al DiMeola/John McLaughlin trio touring? Well this is similar type of music but much more emotional stuff. I can't compare it to "Night of the Stormrider", since I don't have that one. However, "Something Wicked This Way Comes" does have their newer singer, Matthew Barlow - and he's pretty good (much better than the other guy from what I've heard). Overall the album is excellent if you like melodic thrash metal (I THINK that's how I'd describe them). There's also several very good mellow (well, mellow for Iced Earth) songs to balance the album out.
Overall a good, heavy album. "The Dark Saga" is also good, though I prefer "Something Wicked..." since I find it to be more melodic.
