Here's my take on the whole "categorizing" thread:

Bands that sound like Dream Theater: Dream Theater
Bands that sound like Fates Warning: Fates Warning
Bands that sound like Symphony X: Symphony X

I know I'm no fun, but that's my take on it. Pbpbpbpbt!!!

    Oh, here's some another ones...

Bands that sound like Rush: Rush, Triumph
Bands that sound like AC/DC: AC/DC, Accept, Jackyl

That's the ONLY way to truly categorize!!! ;)

9/8 time is counted as 1 & 2 & 3 because it consists of three dotted crotchets
to a bar. It is basically 3 beats per bar with swing, simple as that. No
need to make it sound like rocket science ...

Actually while we are on the subject of TIMING, check out a Mike Portnoy drum
clinic if you can. The way he explains thing is EXCELLENT, even non-musicians
can understand (I was with one of these disadvantaged individuals at such an
event in Paris at the end of February).

I've wanted to meet Dream Theater after every single Dream Theater show I've
ever been to, and I actually have met them a couple of times. I wanted to meet
Steve Vai after G3, and I did. None of that makes me "nuts." Over half of the
people on this mailing list have driven long distances to see DT shows, and
have all had desires to meet the members of the band afterwards. According to
you, are we all nuts? Maybe I'm just misinterpreting what you've written...

If I don't have a life, and don't plan on ever getting one, can I say Chris
DeGarmo is Mickey Mouse? If I want to meet Chris DeGarmo AND Mickey Mouse,
will I have less of a life than Harmon?

My wife used to hang around with QR once in a while in her old groupie days
<grin>. This was well before meeting me. Anyway, she always said that DeGarmo
was very fake and his sincerity was definitely a big act. She really didn't
go for that, which may have been part of the reason she got tired of QR. She
always has good things to say about Rockenfield, but that's it. So, to hear
this, it's no surprise to me. Plus, the dorky clothes are hysterical. Grunge
    is over, Chris. Wake up.

In a message dated 98-10-16 08:54:02 EDT, you write:

    << Hey all-
Well yesterday a buddy of mine and I drove to Atlanta from Athens (about a
1 and half hour drive) to see Chris Degarmo, formerly of Queensryche of
course, with Jerry Cantrell. We only went to see/meet/talk to Chris cause
I don't know anything about Cantrell. After waiting for around 3 hours
outside the venue the tour bus finally arrives and 30 minutes later Chris
and the gang emerge from the bus. Chris was wearing a hat, leather
jacket, these dorky looking huge sunglasses and dark jeans. Immediately,
we both felt a sense of
awkwardness as we introduced ourselves. He looked at us funny like, "what
are you guys doing here?" I, of course, had my Mindcrime shirt on so I
imagine that contributed to it, but he was so indifferent as if he didn't
care at all. He did say he would be back cause they were runnin to do
sound check, but he sure didn't act thrilled.

After waiting another half hour and then another half hour of watching
Chris talking to a security guard, looking back at us and turning back
around with no recognition he finally walks down the stairs towards us.
Once again, he said very little as my friend and I attempted to ask him
some questions. After a couple of standard questions like "We drove out
here to see you Chris", with no response I might add, my friend Mike began
to ask him the following: "So what was it like...?" At the moment Chris
cut him off, gave him the stare from hell and said, "We're not going to
talk about any of that!" (meaning Queensryche related information of
course) If only there had been a picture taken at that
moment cause our faces musta been in complete shock. Stuggling, we tried
to ask him a couple of other things but at that moment it all seemed in
vain. Thirty seconds later Chris says: "Well I'm going to head back to
the bus." This after he'd only been there around a minute. We slowed him
down some to get a couple of things signed and managed to get a few
pictures snapped, but overall this was a terrible experience for me.

Considering this was my first experience meeting a member/former member of
the band which started me down my metal highway I was extremely
dissapointed and in shock. I realize the guy's not in QR anymore, but
his indifference was not needed. What I realize now is that something did
go down between him and the rest of the members of QR, but its something
we'll never know. Chris did say he still got along with the rest of the
guys, BTW. He may be struggling with his life or whatever, but that just
didn't excuse his actions in my opinion. In conclusion, I felt yesterday
as I tried to converse with Chris that I truly was looking into "The Eyes
     of A Stranger".

Hmmm. I don't think this is quite right. The top count would give you a
sig of 7/8 and the bottom one would give 10/8. Try something like this:

ONE two three four eat shit goddammit

or, if you like to avoid taking God's name in vain,

ONE two three four I will kill my dog

    Happy counting!

Well, as a catalyst in all this mess (I'm the originator of the "pussy over music anyday" remark), I feel obligated to say a few things, especially to our good friend Chris:

    1) Pussy != love (that means "DOES NOT EQUAL" for anyone out there who replies faster than they think...) 2) Anyone who compares a dude who is pissed off at the world cuz love sucks to HITLER has some serious friggin' issues with reality (caugh caugh MAX caugh caugh). 3) Women *ARE* evil, and we (or at least I and the occasional lesbian) love 'em anyways 4) The LTE group should enlist the aid of the new Petrucci kid (Kiara?) - since by the age of 5 days, she is probably playing faster and more accurately than most of us... 5) Saturday was my birthday - I'm an ancient and decrepit 23 years old 6) There has to be love, because Alice Cooper's 1974 classic "I love the dead" would make NO sense otherwise 7) Anyone have or seen a review for the Great Kat's music intruction CD-Rom? 8) Happy birthday to me

Well that's all. Appreciate any comment/flames/ RESPONSES ON GREAT KAT CD-ROM.

    Have a great day!

All right, everyone, settle down. I'm weighing in on this hotly debated topic. The Perfesser screams: you're all correct. There is no "wrong" way to count any time sig. There are "standard" ways, and if something is done differently, i.e. three groups of 2 and one group of 3, it can lead to a disparity in notation, or at least differences of interpretation. Regardless, let no one tell you how to accent anything; play what's in your heart. In Supper's Ready by Genesis, there's a part entitled "Apocalypse in 9/8" where Tony Banks plays running triplets while the band turns the beat around as such: ONE two three FOUR five SIX seven eight nine. Which sounds like 3 measures of 9/8 if you take the triplets as the eighth or one measure of 9/8 if you follow the guitar/bass/drum pattern. Interpretation, Shminterpretation. Whatever.

    THIS SUCKS.

Hey, dump Portnoy and get Paul Craddick (could there be a more under-appreciated player out there?) to do it.

Seriously, I LOVE Mike' playing, and I realize that this is going to be total flame-bait, but why does every supergroup now revolve around him? Well, I can answer that myself: Mike (and DT's reputation) sells records.

It's tough to be us, isn't it?
