I'd like to see you explain that to all the Elvis fans who migrate to
Graceland every year and weep when they are shown the fatal toilet of Kingly
Deprivation. Perhaps they might end your life mercifully and quickly.

One should not be posting to a mailing list about getting a life when one
most abruptly replies a defensive message mere moments after the originator
places his. :)

What? Mike on BLS? Is he the producer/mixer/whatever? Or does he actually play on the record? I thought that Bozzio played all the drums (I don't have the album, so I can't check it).

I wish Dream Theater would make more use of those infamous 12th notes. I could use some more vaporProg in my collection. Please oh please reveal the identities of these "that will remain anoymous" pieces that contain 12th notes. Do they really need to be protected from the ravenous music theory junkies in the world?

What's wrong with 5/12? A 12th measure is typically played as a shuffle, or in 1/3's. So start counting. Tap out a 12/12 pattern or just tap a 4/4 beat then tap triplets to each beat, then you get 12/12. Next, make your self only tap 5 times then start over. It's actually a rather prog rythmn. :) I like it. No one ever said a tripet had to be grouped with 2 other triplets. :)
Hell, no worries about the people who try and tell you what is legal theory or not Nicole. :) These people who create limites on their theory way of thinking only limit themselves musically anyway. :) -- KorgX3's last post of the day, seriously...

Yep, Warner Chappell Music Publishing have some. I have seen the guitar music and tabs books for IAW and Awake in a shop so far.

Not a very exciting story, but here goes.
About 2 or 3 years (I was about 16) ago I got guitar world (magazine) every month (still do in fact) and in their there was some guy called John Petrucci who wrote all these columns on strange things like dorian grooves, which at the time was far too complicated for me. Anyway now and then he would go through bits from songs by this band Dream Theater that he was in. So one day when I was down at my local library I was looking under "D" when I come across Awake. So I decide to get it out (ooh errr, what in public).
The thing that hit my little commercial metal brain at the time was that whenever I thought I knew what was going to happen next, based on hearing commercial music, something completely different and strange would happen.Yet instead of sound really bad and out of place it was really cool. After listening to it constantly I decided that I was going to get the tablature book so that I could play all this cool stuff, little did I know that when I got the book I would take one look at some of the stuff and realise that it was far harder than it sounded.
Mind you the one thing that sticks in my mind is that I listened to that album constantly on my walkman on my way to and from school during the winter, and still when I listen to some of the tracks especially Scarred it gives me the same feeling as I had back then which was that the environment was all cold and snowing yet I was feeling warm.
Then eventually I bought all the other albums and I don't regret buying any of them.

I'd imagine that a 12th note is a dotted semi-quaver or 16th note. So 5/12 could be played as 31/32 depending on how you play it. Now that is a strange sig to see 31/32.
Some one mentioned before thinking that 1/4 is strange, yet DT use it a lot especially in ACOS. It's quite often used as an end to movement.
Come on then I set a challenge to all musical jammers. What is the strangest time sigs people have used in their own music. No making things up, and it is not a competition to see who is the best, or most warped, it just might be interesting since in prog music playing with time sigs is normal.
I'll start the ball rolling with two sections from three different songs of mine.
1. An introduction to a song that alternates between 7/4 and 15/8
2. A groove type riff that alternates between 15/16 and 7/8
3. A classical guitar passage (very fates warning APSOG) that is 7/8, 8/8 then 5/8

Hello Ytsejammers!
It's time for another survey! Often questions arise on the ytsejam such as "what other recordings should I pick up?" or "what's the best Iron Maiden to get?". To answer these questions, it's time for a survey by and for ytsejammers. To participate in the survey, send a list of 20 of your favorite, all-time classic recordings. These should be recordings that you would call "the best of genre", "desert island collection" or "10 out of 10's". Real high quality stuff! Any recording can be listed. It doesn't have to be progressive metal or even rock. The survey will run until Oct. 31, 1998. Results will be posted on the ytsejam and on a DT website.
Send your list to: ytse_classics@yahoo.com
One list per person! Each recording will get one point. List each recording only once. Order of the list does not matter.
Example list (Artist - Album Name):
Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy Steve Vai - Sex and Religion Joe Satriani - The Extremist The Gathering - Nighttime Birds Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Dream Theater - Images and Words Pink Floyd - The Wall Pink Floyd - The Division Bell Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood Type O Negative - October Rust Queen - Greatest Hits Queen - Classics Red Hot Chili Peppers - BloodSugarSexMagic Ani Difranco - Not a Pretty Girl Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Gray Ministry - In Case You Didn't Show Up Phish - Rift Ray Lynch - No Blue Thing Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
It usually works best to make a large list over several days, and then narrow it down to 20 before you submit the list. This may keep you from forgetting a long lost classic.
Don't send your list to the ytsejam! Once again, send to: ytse_classics@yahoo.com
Please keep this survey among the ytsejam community. Do not try to manipulate the results! (i.e. Don't tell all your friends on the "Barney" mailing list to send e-mails pushing for "Barney Sings the Blues".)
Jam on!

I swear, you know the two negative posts I've recieved for my post haven't even had their facts right. The first one said I drove 3 hours to get there which was wrong; it was hardly half that, but who really gives a shit. (like Matt said) And secondly, neither my friend nor I asked him one fuckin thing about Queensryche as the "dissapoinment" post suggests. If you're gonna post something about a paticular post, especially a controversial one, the least you guys could do is read the original post a bit more carefully. It doesn't take too much brains to figure that one out. Chirs was a dick only because we were Queensryche fans, nothing more. It is not because we asked about the ryche or anything else. He felt like giving us a hard time and that's exactly what he did. That doesn't mean I can't and won't complain about him. Give me a break...

Well, your right in the sense that I DID terribly over-react, and what I said makes me seem just as big a jerk. And just so you know, the only reason I posted my message here was because Chris posted to the list. And I'm posting now because it's become a big thread. Anyway, several others out there handled themselves much better than I.
He was NOT saying music over hopeless love, though. I would definitely agree that love is often not "worth the pain that you feel". I've been hurt, too. Every single time. And I want to just completely give up. Sometimes I feel that ALL girls in the world (but most guys are just as bad -er, actually most are worse) are just out to play the guys just because they CAN.
But he posted his insults directly to the list. That's why I felt the need to do the same.
If I was beaten by a mob of black gangsters, even if it happened every time I got too near one, I would still not announce to the ytsejam that I felt all blacks were cannibals or Satan-worshippers, and yell "White Power" at everybody. First of all, I would be DEAD WRONG, even if it seemed that way a lot. Personally I have _never_ felt that way, and I've never been in gang fights or anything. But even if I DID choose to believe that, it is seriously uncool to go on Ytsejam and spout off my attitudes. I mean, I did over-react, but this Chris guy needed to be slapped.
Unfortunately, I now seem evil too.
