So I happened to hear today that Ray Gillen of Badlands died 5 years
ago. Damn, I'm bummed. I never heard the news. I must have seen them
play live just before he died. They played several new songs that were
to be released on their 3rd album (that never was released).
The good news is that material that was supposed to be on the 3rd
album will be released soon (recorded live in the studio.)
Anyone know how he died? When and where?
hasta, BH
P.S. If you like straight ahead rock in the style of an updated
Zeppelin, you should try out Badlands. Great playing and excellent
songwriting.

Who dared to say that having a long trip for seeing a band is STUPID???!
:)
I traveled through 2 countries to see Dream Theater! Not 3 hours, 20
hours! Stupid?
Just consider yourself lucky that you have chance to attend ANY concert
you like over there. At least in USA you have concerts of your fave and
hated bands ALL the time! You can choose! In my country we don't have
that privilege and you bet I would go to foreign countries to see some.
Stupid? Get outta here!
DT gig was my first big concert I attended. And I'm 23. :) Many of you
maybe saw Soundgarden, Metallica, Iron Maiden, DT, and bucnh of other
famous bands and you're just 18!!! :)

Well i seemed to have opened up a big 'ol can of worms 8) with this
odd time thread. I appriciate all the responses pub and priv. Now to sit
down and devoure all the info! (the fun part). The more I look at the DT
songbooks and listen to the music, it amazes me how fluid they make it
seem, especially on I&W.
Thats all for now, take is easy until next time!

If it wasn't for school taken up all my time i'd drive/walk/hitchhike
to see a clinic. Has anyone checked out his Progressive Drumming video?
A friend of mine is letting me borrow the Myung vid, and it's nice..i
don't play bass, but it was great to see how he approaches the

Or it could be that Mike just refuses to sit still for more than ten
minutes at a time. I swear, if you wanted him to stay in one place for more
than a couple days, you'd probably have to tie him up. I know why he plays
drums: if he doesn't whale the crap out of 'em for several hours each day
he'd be too keyed up to go to sleep.
Lucky for us that we get the product of that excess energy: drum clinics
and oodles of side and solo projects.
Ta,
Phil

Well, although it is not 100% yet, it doesn't look like this project is going
to happen right away (keep your fingers crossed for next year!)
In other project news, I got this message from Nick van Dyk:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ray, Mark and I are working on a new side project, tentatively
called Maggie Speaks. It's an eclectic mix of music
(some atmospheric stuff ala APSOG, but mostly more aggressive) that will
have the energy of No Exit-era with some
additional progressiveness in a more "90s" sounding package. We're busy
writing now and are hoping to get into the studio before the end of the
year for release sometime in the first few months of next year. It's
unclear whether this will be distributed solely through the internet or
whether a label will pick it up for distribution. Stay tuned for
details.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know who Nick is (but I am sure someone will fill us all in), but keep
checking my website for the latest details...

About the 5/12 thing.
The way I see it, if people want to count with so called "12th" notes then let them go for it. Personally, I think I'd just set the metronome 1/3 faster and count in 16th notes.
Anybody want to disagree?

Yes, but you see, its not just counting when WE DONT KNOW HOW TO COUNT A 12TH NOTE BECAUSE THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ONE! I even asked my High School Music Theory teacher that I had last year and my band's drummer, who is very good with rhythms (and I mean VERY good, and he is going to Berklee next fall semester) if there was, both their answers were no. You can have 5/2 maybe (half notes), but not 5/12. Explain to us how you count a 12th note, and what it looks like on the staff, then we will know for sure, instead of you just telling it exists and not actually explaining HOW it exists. OK, I'll shut up now ;-)

Ok all-- I have to get in on this because I AM ODD METER BOY!!! So that I don't sound like I'm trying to teach anyone anything, I'll be quick and somewhat simple (although there is nothing mathematically simple about odd signatures.) 9/8 can be easy or hard, symmetrical or assymetrical, all depending on the number and length of the subdivisions. If you do it in 3+3+3, you're going the waltz route, merely 3/8 circling in on itself. You can also do 4+5, easy enough, just add an eighth to 4/4 and you're in business. However, John Petrucci himself (his most high guitarness) said in a long ago guitar mag interview that he had tried several ways, including 2+2+2+3, giving you four accents, one being only an eighth longer than the rest. I tend to break 9/8 down further into sixteenth note accents, because the drummer I play with really screws around with the barlines and I lose ONE all the damned time. I don't count with numbers though, so all you people who don't do the number thing, here's a new one: quarters: ta-ta-ta-ta eighths: ta-ki-ta-ki-ta-ki-ta-ki eighth triplets: takita-takita-takita-takita sixteenths: tadakina-tadakina-tadakina-tadakina sixteenth triplets: tikitatakata-tikitatakata-tikitatakata-tikitatakata I don't count past that. but the syllables make it so that you can do meter in kinda "nonsensical" words... easier to memorize and you can work your accents in a way that mimics your counting: 7/8 "taki taki tadaki-taki taki tadaki" Oh-- and when scoring-- you make your stresses and accents known to the performer by beaming eighths and sixteenths properly, and using dynamics and phrase markings. I was a music student too... can't ya tell?
--Nik --Liquid T on IRC... please don't flame me... you guys started it... I just like odd meter a lot!!!!

The description fits DR but not HC.... I wouldn't compare the two bands. I don't know what to think of HC. They sound like a typical Prog metal band, but then again they don't. They do have some catchy songs, but I can't fall in love with them. Still, it stays in my car's CD changer.... Can't explain it...

Often times the only way to figure out a DT song is to listen hard, pick at it for weeks at a piano, look at guitar tab, pick at it more, pray, pick, and cry. Otherwise, you could track down the much-sought-after Japanese tab books. They're full score tab, with musical notation. By the way, the Warner Brothers tab books have normal staff music as well, but it's mostly the guitar, not the keys (except WFS and SDV, and bits and pieces of other songs.) But the best bet is probably the Japanese books.

A twelth note would simply be a dotted 16th. A dotted 16th is equal to 3 32nds tied together. 3/32 = 1/12. So, 5/12 time would just be a time sig with an incredible jazzy, shuffley type of feel.
/me goes off to write a song in 5/12.
