--Look, you can't notate 5/12 time, that's all. Sure, you can count it, tap it, think it...but it can't be written down to fit in within the grand scheme of music theory. Thats why some say it's not "legal." If you tried to write it down, it would just end up looking like an existing, and simpler, time signature. Everyone counts things differently, but when you invent a time signature like that, it just confuses those of us who have "limited" ourselves to learning music theory. :)

I mostly agree, but let me show you what I do. As a trumpet player for 10 years, I live and die by the techniques of the verbalization of articulations. So if I may, lemme just make a few tweaks to your otherwise sound advice.
This kind of stuff matters when you are trying to verbalize something as fast and complex as, for instance, the solo line in Scarred...With practice (lots of it), you can say JP's lines as fast as he plays them. Small consolation to guitar players, but to me, since I have no hope of ever playing near to JP's speed, it is fun as hell singing along, precisely articulating with him side by side.
Now, Im no vocalist. Perhaps there are better ways than these to *sing*, but when I deal strictly with rhythm, I find the following methods to be the best.
Quarters: Can be either ta, tu, tee, whatever sounds right...In general, quarters move too slow to really matter. I always think tu, cuz that makes the best sound on the trumpet.
Eigths: Tu-ku-tu-ku or tee-kee-tee-kee, depending on whether the pitch you are articulating is high or low. You will find that tu-ku-tu-ku is much easier lower in pitch, and tee-kee-tee-kee is much easier with higher pitches. Anyone who whistles and has examined exactly how he/she does it will tell you that the higher the toungue is in the mouth, the higher the pitch. Saying tee-kee-tee-kee brings the tongue up to the roof of the mouth, making the articulation of higher notes easier.
Sixteenths are just eights twice as fast...Once you get good at it you can sing along to the beginning of Paradigm Shift, and songs just as fast as that.
Du-gu-du-gu is also good sometimes, but only when you have tu-ku-tu-ku down. The reason you might want to use du-gu-du-gu is that it is faster than tktk. It is also sloppier. For me, it's gotta be clean, so I always go with tu-ku-tu-ku.
Triplets are phrased either tu-tu-ku or tu-ku-tu, which ever is easier or more appropriate. If there is a long line of triplets, tu-tu-ku tu-tu-ku is MUCH faster. It is somewhat difficult to get at first, but once you do, its fast as hell...Cleanly articulating songs like Metallica's One or somethings even faster is cake.
Nick had the right idea in general, but when you have really complex rhythms, it is good to have tu ku as your duple base and tu-tu-ku as your triple meter base. With articulations like tadakina and tikitatakata, there is really no standard.
For instance, what would you do with a quintuplet? Easy...tu-tu-ku-tu-ku if it is 3-2, or tu-ku-tu-tu-ku if it is 2-3. Nick's method leaves it kind of up in the air as to what to do with rhythms other than those based in two or three.

A dotted 16th is a dotted 16th. And no way of adding or counting can get 5/12, because it doesn't work that way. It's not really a fraction. It's this simple. 5/12 means that there are 5 beats in a measure and the 12th NOTE gets the beat. If they were all dotted 16ths, they would use a different note. But that doesn't matter anyway. I'm sure a lot of you guts already know this, but for those who don't (which sounds like a majority), they wouldn't use a different number anyway. %/12 implies that the _12th note_, and none other, gets the beat. And the fact is THERE IS NO 12th NOTE!
It's nice to think about counting weird, but it simply does not work that way. 5/12 does not exist. But 5/2 does, and it IS very rare and unique, as most would just make it 5/4...
Trust me on that. I'm only posting because after I thought the issue was resolved, several people keep trying to explain it away. Trust me, 5/12 does NOT exist.

Sounds pretty awesome, eh? Before I had heard the album I thought that starting off with a 10-minute epic was insane, but it works really well. Otherwise I liked the album instantly better than "Visions" but nothing can ever top "Episode", it's a real classic for me.
I saw the opening gig for Strato's world tour, in Helsinki last week. They played seven new songs (out of ten!!), starting with "Destiny". It didn't work very well as a starting song, I'd much rather see it in the end of the show. I will see the band again next week, maybe they have made some changes to the set. The gig itself was brilliant (except for the lame crowd), and for me the best part was Kotipelto's voice. This new stuff seems to bring out new qualities of his voice. Very enjoyable. :-) The whole band sounded awesome.

Hey, I can beat you at that. I traveled from Estonia to Hungary, which makes 6 countries on the way. Hitchhiked to Poland, then took a train. (Include sleeping in railroad stations and camping in forests.) Spent 5 days getting there. I do need to get a life. :-)
OK, maybe I really didn't go there specifically for the Dream Theater concert and perhaps it was just an additional bonus, but hey!
Thus, I've never really understood those posts where people sigh and say, "Dream Theater [or any other band] 5 hours away from me. Goddamnit, it's much too far. I guess I'll go get shitfaced over the grief instead." :-)
