Nope the intro is sung by a Finnish choir boy named Cantores Minores.
Destiny is without doubt Stratovarius best album to date IMO.
The use of choirs and an orchestra is done really well, giving
    everything
a more 'epic' feel, there's seem to be a little more depth with the
    songwriting.
Jens also seems to be given more space to strut his stuff.
Timo Tolkki's guitar playing is certainly more emotional, his solo's are
    full of
feeling and melody, but he still shreds too :)

    Zero Hour self titled
This is basically a quite superb packaged demo CD, that looks and
sounds as good as any major progressive band could release.
The music is heavy and powerful prog and they have a great vocalist too
    boot.

I donīt like this album very much. There are only two songs that come
close to the usual Strato-quality I have come to expect from them(S.O.S
and Cold Winter Nights). Why, you ask?Simply because the melodies(The
melody that starts the song Destiny is so lame that you donīt know
whether to laugh or cry)arenīt very good and because this album seems to
lack itīs own style.Itīs only Visions part two.Except itīs not nearly as
    good as Visions.

The Japanese Tab books contain the Full tab and notation for al
instruments but what everyone fails to realize is sometimes these
notations can be DEAD WRONG. I have the books for WDADU, I&W and Awake
and I'll tel you that quite a bit of the stuff is wrong. Like for
example the notation for they keys in 6:00 is so freakin wrong I can't
believe it. I mean I even typed it into my comp to double check that I
wasn't playing it wrong cuz it sounds nothing like 6:00. anyway but if
your looking for the general jist of these tunes, these books are a good
thing, you just need to find a way to get em from japan.........

So i'm working late and Limelight (that Rush tune) comes on the radio. I'm groovin'. Said killer song ends. As I reflect upon the coolness of all things Rush, the DJ casually announces that he's got a copy of the new Rush, Different Stages Live, AND he's going to play some of it right now! A wild whoop of joy reverberates from the walls of my office. Then, as Wild Koba might put it, I was anally raped. He played 5 seconds of audience noise, then stopped the CD, saying smugly, "OK...I just played some of it." What a cocksmoker. Kindly forgive my venting. --an aural hand

Questions I have include: 1. I never heard 4-8 weeks. I assumed since the discs might have arrived by the Powermad dates, then they would have been mailed out close to those dates. 2. Weren't they letting you buy tickets that let you get in for less money but you wouldn't get a cd?

Ya know, I don't have any formal training in music theory - just the little bits and pieces I get from the "teach yourself..." books. Now that I've identified myself as a total ameteur, lemme share some things I've noticed. Nobody likes whole notes. I dunno why, but instead of saying, "everytime the big fat hairy guy smacks the drum, I'm gonna say it's a WHOLE note", it's instead called a QUARTER note. Lookin' at my dream theater tabulature, I notice that a lot of times, triplets are used that break a QUARTER note into 3 pieces, or 12th (maybe "dodecets"?) NOTES. By saying a theme repeats every time 5 of these mutha fuckas pass by, isn't that 5/12 timing? Looking at my Yngwie tabulature, I notice that a lot of times, he takes a quarter note and instead of breaking it into 2 pieces (EIGHTS), he breaks it into 5 (TENTH Notes). Play these twice as fast (like our good ol' herring-choking buddy loves to do) and you have TWENTIETH notes. Be a completely self-indulgent prog freak and make a theme repeat every 9 or so of these notes, and you got 9/20 time sig. I fail to see how any fraction is un-realizable using this methodology. I guess it just ain't kosher to have something in the denominator that ain't a power of 2.

As an Electrical Engineer - I run into this a lot...you get so educated at something that you can't see an idea unless it's explained using engineering geek parlance. Too smart equals dumb sometimes. I'm as guilty as the next geek.

    Hey everyone-

< *sniff* ... smells like open ass. CDNow says October 27. No listing at Music Boulevard nor at CD Universe. Where've you been looking? >

Well, to name a few - CD World (www.cdworld.com) CD Source (www.cdsource.com) CD USA (www.cdusa.com)

    They're all major, professional sites...

These all say the release date for the video is *October 20, 1998*.

I trust CDNow more than them, so they're probably wrong, etc....

P.S. #1: CD Teleshop (www.cdteleshop.com) lists OiaLT (CD) to be released Oct. 23 (this Friday) !?!

P.S. #2: CD Cellar has promo copies of "Burning My Soul" with the LP version, edit, and a short audio bio. I thought it sounded pretty cool, though not nearly as cool as the Japanese Hollow Years single (just ordered mine :-() ).

P.S. #3: Does anyone else just love "The Way it Used to Be"? It has so many different styles wrapped up in one little song: The late-Floydish playing/singing on the second verse (1:20) and guitar solo (5:00), the Edge/U2-ish intro, the shitkicker rock section at the end (6:30), the kick-back keyboard interlude (4:40), the King's X riff (6:10), etc. I just think it's a great song (and James wrote the lyrics!). Also some very cool (not terribly difficult, but very cool) bass playing. Too bad it didn't make the album....

I never claimed that Berklee's a guarantee for anything. I wanted to further my musical education because I really love music for myself. I worked my ass off at that school for 4 long years and reached a level of musicianship and maturity in all facets of my life that I will always treasure. I accept that my degree is pretty much useless- it won't get me a job unless I want to pursue teaching at the university level. No thanks- I play in bands and teach privately for a living. What do you do MooBoy? I would highly doubt you have as much fun doing what you do to make a living as I do. If you do, good for you. You won't find me making assumptions about a part of your life which I know nothing about, however. Put down Berklee if you know what it's like. Plenty of students- current and past- do. But find something out about it before you make sweeping generalizations about it and it's students- including myself.

Oh well- musical academics are not for everyone. Berklee, I've noticed is a very touchy subject on this list- what isn't for that matter? I happen to like knowing as much about music as I can. I don't feel that it has stunted my growth musically or altered my feel by clouding my head with technicalities. It has only opened up my ears and showed me the possibilities in which exist in music. If you don't know or don't even want to know anything about something which absolutely consumes your life 24 hours a day like music does mine, and wanting to take the steps to try to help yourself in this very difficult course in life, fine. But don't assume that those who want choose that course are delusional. I know it's not a guarantee for anything. But I was the one who chose to accept that risk and am now reaping it's rewards.

    Hello Ytsejammers!

It's time for another survey! Often questions arise on the ytsejam such as "what other recordings should I pick up?" or "what's the best Iron Maiden to get?". To answer these questions, it's time for a survey by and for ytsejammers. To participate in the survey, send a list of 20 of your favorite, all-time classic recordings. These should be recordings that you would call "the best of genre" or "desert island collection". Real high quality stuff! Any recording can be listed. It doesn't have to be progressive metal or even rock. The survey will run until Oct. 31, 1998. Results will be posted on the ytsejam and on a DT website.

    Send your list to: ytse_classics@yahoo.com

List your top 20. One list per person! Each recording will get one point. List each recording only once. Order of the list does not matter.

    Example list:

Rush - Moving Pictures Rush - Permanent Waves Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Gray Dream Theater - Images and Words Dream Theater - Awake Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime Yes - Close to the Edge Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Genesis - Selling England by the Pound King Crimson - Discipline Tool - Aenima Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Live Art Living Colour - Stain Peter Gabriel - Secret World Live Bozzio/Levin/Stevens - Black Light Syndrome Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik Primus - Frizzle Fry Metallica - ...And Justice For All Alice In Chains - Dirt Faith No More - King For a Day, Fool for a Lifetime

It usually works best to make a large list over several days, and then narrow it down to 20 before you submit the list. This may keep you from forgetting a long lost classic.

Don't send your list to the ytsejam! Once again, send to: ytse_classics@yahoo.com

Please keep this survey among the ytsejam community. Do not try to manipulate the results! (i.e. Don't tell all your friends on the "Barney" mailing list to send e-mails pushing for "Barney Sings the Blues".)

    Jam on!
