I posted before about a 12th note (mind you I am not talking about 5/12
time), having a swing feel USING THIS TERM VERY LOOSELY. It has no
practical purposes except for sequencing a drum machine.
Check out the book The Art of Digital Drumming and do not take my word for
it take theirs. So yes because sequencers are not human and do not have
feel we have to pretend they do by giving it odd note values.

Kerrang! have just published their review of OiaL, and it was decidedly
    uncomplimentary. Flametime. :-)

They also briefly mentioned Superior's "Younique", giving it three out
of five together with a snide racist comment about their name/nationality
    combination.

    Kerrang! sucks.

ok, i won't argue with you that you could play somethign and call it 5/12, although i'm pretty sure there's a way to label that in the traditional system, i just don't feel like thinkin about that right now - my point is, true, you can "feel" 5/12 and play it and all, but when you write it down and send it across the country so your second cousin in california can see how much cooler the music you're playing is than what he's doing with that crappy surf-rock band of his (no offense to any surf rockers on the list), how would you write it down? would you write it as 5/12? what does a 12th note look like on paper? i'm not arguin the fact that you can play something that you call 5/12, just that when you write it down you'll have to "translate it" into traditional notation. Unless, as people have mentioned, you make up a new notation system for your own private use, sorta like shorthand (this one friend of mine shortens every word, even "a" becomes a sort of weird little squigly slash, its like a code, i cant tell what anything means when i borrow his class notes) but if you plan on sharing it with other musicians you're gonna have to use traditional form unless you're one of those strange dudes who likes to be seen as a weird artist by society or whatever (no offense to any strange dudes on this list who like to be seen as weird artists by society or whatever), in which case i would completely abandon traditional notation and take up Brian Hayden's system of base 3, and while you're at it make up completely new symbols for notes (please don't use staffs, those are really anoying in the current system), like maybe a little drawing of a big mac for a whole note, a whopper jr. for a half note, a (duh) quarter pounder for a quarter note, those little buddy burgers burger king used to have for eight notes... d'oh, never mind, we're in base 3 now. well anyways you get the idea. Moo.

Yes, but the purpose of musical notation (ANY knid of notation, whether it's tab or staff or whatever) is to provide a way for the composer to instruct the performer(s) without actually being there. You can write in a bizarre, twisted notation style, but if the performers have no idea what you are trying to convey, then ultimately, it's pointless to write it down. You'll be the only one who knows how to read it, and you don't *need* to read it - you *wrote* it. :-)

I dont know about others on the jam, but for me, it turns the whole email blood-red and the mime-html come out like takatuta stuff they were posting the other day :} 2) as for the technical stuff, its just a faze, we'll outgrow it in a week or two when we start bitching about something new :} (refer to Mike Portnoy's post)

That way, everyone who's clamoring about how there is or isn't such a thing as a 5/12 time sig can review it on their own and decide?

Yes. Yes I am. I hereby asign that gay "Prince" symbol to be the official symbol of a twelfth note. Turn the mother fucker upside down, and you now have the "Looooeeeee official 13th note" symbol. Lets see if we can't get some usage out of this queer-ass little character.

The only point in this discussion that was made clear to me is that a time signature can be any fraction and still be meaningful, but blue smoke and sparks will come out of the ears of any "true" musician that sees something other than a power of 2 in the denominator. I hope someone from OFB steps up and sez "I *ACTUALLY* wrote that piece in 27/15 time", JUST TO SEE HOW WELL THE HOLIER-THAN-THOU THEORY FREAKS DEAL WITH THAT LITTLE PARADIGM SHIFT.

judging from the lack of responses, I guess no one has seen or baught that Great Kat instructional CD-Rom?

OK.... more Iron Maiden! Firstly, thanks a million (& a half) to everybody (all 200 of you! *grin*) who keeps pouring in I.M. suggestions and advice! You guys are fucking awesome!

Well in addition to my "Virtual XI" (commence booing and hissing now), I just received my copy of "Piece of Mind". After 2 listens, I'm pretty impressed. YES, I do like it better than VXI, and YES Bruce is superior to Blaze - no question about that. I still think VXI is pretty cool too though. My favorite track so far is "The Trooper". This shit just kicks ass! "Die With Your Boots On" is a rocker too! And I was surprised to find that "To Tame a Land" is based on the Dune books by Frank Herbert! KICK ASS!

One question though...... what the fuck is that messed up backwards talking at the beginning of one of the tracks ("Still Life", I think)?

Honestly people, sometimes you can *anal*yze something to death. All the points have been made. If you want to keep arguing, take it to the personal level, that's why we can see everyone's personal email address. If you're thinking about posting a response to every nimrod who spouts his personal opinions on the list (in which category I include myself), take a minute to think first. The **th note thing is really an abstract, conceptual exercise. Leave it at that: if you don't think it's possible, fine, if you do, fine. I don't give a flying leap one way or another. Oh and one more thing: no self-respecting trumpet player is going to play 5 ascending notes for 5 minutes. He would much rather say "fuck this" and walk out.

Meanwhile, between the demented ramblings of undereducated musical types, Al thoughtfully inquired: >[paraphrase] How come you don't get your undies all in a twist with the live replacements of KevMo?

Apparently, everyone is still just blown away by the production. Besides, Kevin never officially joined FW. Therefore, the die-hards can't whine bitterly about freedom of expression, nor can the Moorehaters crow.

If we actually devised a notation for #@th notes in Finale, could we call that font "Sherinian"??

On behalf of all the musicians on the list, I apologize for wasting the bandwidth on an irrelevant topic of notation.
