we have a saying in my company (which is probably used in a lot of
other places) when a discussion turns in to something very offtopic
and very long-winded. It's called a rathole. Well, the damn
discussion on 12th notes is JUST THAT. So, basically, this is the
SHUT THE HELL UP email :) Take it to private email if you want to
continue, but not on the ytsejam anymore. This is NOT the music
theory mailing list. I know sometimes discussions like this come up
and I don't mind, but this is out of control, so it ends now.

    thankyouverymuch,
    Skadz

Hello, I was just wondering if there is an LTE FAQ so I could find out where they came up with the song titles, I mean, it must be difficult to put a title to an instrumental track, right? Saying that, they've done it *perfectly* with Kindred Spirits, Freedom Of Speech, and most obviously State Of Grace. Am I the only one who believes that the last third of Kindred Spirits actually makes them want to play the song to their own personal kindred spirit, someone who thinks and feels the same as you??? That's what it makes me want to do, everytime, I just need to find my kindred spirit now so I can play it to her....

I have put up a new Message Board system on my website, and would like some people to go check it out and let me know what you think. The link is: http://www.ivorygate.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro

This is currently the free version of this board software, but it looks pretty good, so I'll probably be getting the commercial version as soon as I can scrape up the money (in between new CD releases!) The commercial version has many more features, which I think are really cool (searching, etc.).

I currently have forums set up for Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Other Bands, Trading Post, and one for YtseRadio (good suggestion saveur!), let me know if you have ideas for any others (especially if you wish to be the moderator).

Here Here. I'll second that!! Dream Theater is the kind of band that gives me hope for the music scene in general.

I am anxiously awaiting the new live DT cd, Liquid tension experiment 2, and anything else Mike Portnoy and the rest of the guys in DT care to give us for our listening enjoyment.

Long Live Dream Theater and their 'SuperGroups'!!!!!

What the hell? There's always something to love. Somepeople love watching operas. Some people love watching Stone Cold Steve Austin plant Vince McMahon facefirst into the mat. Some people *gasp* love their wives. I, personally, love anything that will willingly jusmp on my lap and let me lick it's ears clean. (God, I love my cat). Love is all around you, you can't hide from it. Every once in awhile it likes to reach out and grab you by the uvula and stick you to another being. It all depends on how much control over the situation you have as to whether love will give you an emotional lobotomy in the end. :) Now if I could only find a nice girl who wouldn't mind me licking her ears clean and I'd be set! :)

    Lisa,

Your Top 20 favorites is exactly what we want! :o)

    And once again:

    Hello Ytsejammers!

    It's time for another survey!

To participate in the survey, send a list of your Top 20 favorite recordings.

The survey will run until Oct. 31, 1998. Results will be posted on the ytsejam and on a DT website.

    Send your list to: ytse_classics@yahoo.com

One list per person. Order of the list does not matter. Each recording will get one point. List each recording only once.

    Example list (Artist - Title):

Dream Theater - Falling Into Infinity Dream Theater - Awake The Rollins Band - The End of the Silence Def Leppard - Pyromania The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds The Beatles - Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band Snoop Doggy Dog - Doggy Style Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta Sting - Nothing Like the Sun Peter Gabriel - Security Genesis - Duke Led Zeppelin - Presence Voivod - Nothingface Scorpions - Love at First Sting White Zombie - La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol 1 The Cure - Disintegration Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill Sade - Best of

It usually works best to make a large list over several days, and then narrow it down to 20 before you submit the list. This may keep you from forgetting something.

Don't send your list to the ytsejam! Once again, send to: ytse_classics@yahoo.com

    Jam on!

I think you may be confusing this with polymeters, where one time sig is played over a different one. The end of Lie is like this, Petrucci is playing in 3/8 and the other guys are in 4/4 (according to the guitar tab, I dunno if thats right). Yes did this a lot too.

the longer and longer I read about this 5/12 crap, the more it reminds me about that big disscussion we had about music theory in general a few months back. Some people said that you couldnt venture outside of theory, some people said you could. This is the same type of disscussion

The fact of the matter is, the only numrical ways notes can be written (in a time sig) are 2 (half notes), 4(quarter notes), 8(eighth notes), 16 (16th notes), 32 (32nd notes), and 64 (64th ntoes). Any other strange rhythms dont result in time sigs with made up notes, but are in fact polymeters, one time sig played on top of another, resulting in multiple rhythms. As far as the conga drums, it really just sounds like the one guy was ACCENTING the 2nd note of a 5 pattern every 2 measures or so. You can do that too. About someone refering to a signature that means something to themselves is alright, but when you bring it to anyone else outside of your method of writting notes, time measures, etc. they will be utterly confused as 12th notes do not exist in the musical theory of the western world. The term of 4/4 being refered to as a "mother rhythm" is a good example. A very common way of saying 4/4 in standard notation would be "common time" (often refered to by a "C" where the time sig should be. I guess someone though, "well, 4/4 is probably the most common time signature, why dont we make another way of saying it "common time" the people Bafu refered to probably thought the same way, but called it "mother rhythm" instead. But if you went up to any musician that did not know this term for 4/4, they wouldnt know what you were talking about. Thats all I'm gonna say.

Hey all. I for one didn't see Mads inquiring about an open bodied jazz guitar, but if anyone wants one and has $10,000, feel free to contact me. I have a 1939 Vega jazz guiat, all carved out of one piece of wood. Ever since I found out how much the damn thing is worth, I cant play it!!! Mike Portnoy, I love you man.. don't ever play with your shirt on. Speaking of Fate's Warning and the live APSoG sessions, anyone know who played keyboards for them earlier this year? I saw them at the Whiskey in Hollywood, and the keyboardist was phenomenal. He looked about 17, and he was playing with his eyes shut.

    Cheers, Amanda

Hey, reading the guitar solo for UAGM, I noticed that (with the time sig in 4/4), Petrucci plays a string of 16th notes in groups of 11, but only two of these strings of 11 are in one measure. Can someone explain to me how to count this (and PLEASE dont give me a non-existant time sig ;-)

Also, watching a video in Global Studies today about ancient Rome, they showed an old theater that was ordered built by Agustus. they pulled out into an aerial shot and guess what? its the same thing on the head of that guy on the cover of OiaLT! Guessing that, Storm took this picture of a "theater" and put it inside this guy's head or mind, like a dream. a dream of a theater, or a Dream Theater. The hand, eye, mouth, and ear pattern would refer to the hands being the hands that play the instruments, with the mouth being James' voice. The person at a concert uses his eyes and ears to experience the band. I know this all sounds weird, but this is just how Storm thinks. I have his book. Just thought it was interesting.
