You know how when you compare inches to centimeters it always seems more
logical to use the metric version, especially when you're doing any
sort of calculation? Well, think about this: when music notation was
being developed, they based everything on 2. If you have one time span,
call that a whole note, if you cut that in half, it's a half note. If you
cut it into 3rd's, you have a triplet, or 5th's you have a quintuplet,
or any prime number, you have a whateverlet. It gets kind of arbatrary
and that leads to the discussion of where there are or are not 12th notes
(which there aren't). What if music was metric? What if instead of a time
signature, you had the beats ber minute, and the length of some note,
ie 1 or .5 or .25, perhaps 25 centi-notes. It might be interesting.

Ytsejammers never cease to amaze me.....
OK, lets get this straight RIGHT NOW.
_IF_ you get a warning message from me, it is _NOT_ a personal attack
in any way, shape or form. I am just pointing out that a post you
sent to the jam was inappropriate for some reason or another, that's
IT, nothing more. I am trying as hard as I can to keep up on the list
and send out messages as often as possible to attempt to get people to
keep the content of the ytsejam within the context of the mailing
list, but I don't always keep up 100%, so don't send me mail saying
well you sent this to me, but did Mr X get one? My answer to that is
"It doesn't concern you"
If you have questions/comments/etc about this, please _ASK_ me, don't
whine to me.

Well, as explained in this month's (or last month's?) Modern Drummer, Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure was titled because the photographer that took the studio shots kept calling Mike and Tony the names Chris and Kevin (respectively...). So later, while being creative, Tony (or maybe it was Mike, but I think it was Tony - correct me if I'm wrong, you who read the article) suggested the title for the song and Mike (or Tony....) thought it to be fairly humorous and it stuck....

Well, a Space Dye Vest is a piece of clothing - a vest, actually :). It is sort of a weird, irridescent, woven material that looks somewhat "spacey", if you will. I have a mail-order clothing catalog (Chadwick's or Land's End or something) that sells one. I'll try and scan a picture and give it to someone to post on a website, since I don't maintain my own....

To all the stupid retards who still think there are $#!+ notes,
Fine. Twelfth note all you want. 35th note all tou want.
The fact is you cannot notate them to anyone else.
If you still think it's about closed-mindedness, then FINE!
Whenever I write music now, I'm not using paper or a 5-line staff for that matter. Closed-minded establishment. I'm going to use an elephant.
AN AFRICAN FUCKING ELEPHANT!!!!!
And I won't WRITE the music, no, no... writing is establishment.
I'm psychicly using bugs to put designs on it.
So when I send you an ELEPHANT with pink and blue triangles and swirly designs and polka dots, in Apple/Pie/Banana time signature, and then tell you that's the music that you're supposed to play exactly the way I hear it, well I guess you'll just have to figure it out.
.. And I guess you're just going 2 tell me that's OK, huh?

Sorry to post this to the jam, but I just got 'Jam 4361, and the last one (before that) that I got was 4356! I was thinking that the numbering is just fucked, but on 4361 somebody replied to a post I made, which I never even saw (my own post, I mean). So I know I missed at least one Jam. Could somebody send me the missing 'jams, or email me the address of where the old Jams are? If it's ftp://ftp.dreamt.org/pub/ytsejam/ , that's way outdaded, and the last one on there is 2382. What's up with that?
OK, thanks

Hey Jammers -
Well, I'd just like to comment on Mike Portnoy. He is definitely the man. One of the first DT songs I ever listened to was "6:00", and I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the drum intro.
Mike, you're amazing - I'll see you at your clinic in Tempe....
P.S. And to the other Mike - it's OK - we're all human... :)

If there's any boot Derek's gonna be talked about getting here, it will be some bootLEG or something. :) Unless you mean about how he used to post here and doesn't anymore. He left the list because a few children on here were real harsh to him and some absolute dickmunch thought it was cute to forge his email address and sned bullshit to the jam under his name. Hey all, Much thanks to Vince and Ptacek for addressing my gear concerns. So I guess the state of things is this: right now I have a 4x12 that I'm supposing would fare well for any head rated at 80 watts or under. So, taking that into account, I could sell my combo for $250-300, leaving me $700-800 to save up just for a Triaxis? Looks like I'll have to pass on that new DT cd... :) And if I'm not mistaken, isn't the Triaxis just a pre-amp? So I'd have to get a power amp too... Now I'm getting scared. :-{ So I should check out Mesa, Marshall, and Laney. That should keep me busy through Christmas... Vince: Believe me, I steer clear of Digitech products. The only thing they sell that's worth a cent in my mind is the original Whammy pedal. I was amazed at the poor quality of the RP-7 when I tried it out one day. As for effects, it'll likely be a Rocktron Replifex that I get, if I can find one used. I already have some money allocated to that end. I was going to buy the new head after that, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe that head should come first. No point getting effects if you're not using them on your main amp... :P And Chris, I forgot one guitar in the hollow-body vein: Ibanez Artstar. These are fairly reasonable (if memory serves), and don't have the added weight to the price tag that Ibanez signature models bring. I checked over on Ibanez's website, and these are played by John Scofield, among others. I also peeked at the Washburn line on their page, but as most people aren't impressed by Washburn, I'll spare you my thoughts on those. And finally, after having them on my old Washburn for about a month now, I have to give my glowing recommendation for EMG's 89 and 81 pickups. Despite their rather limited uses (not really 'blues' pickups...), I love em! They provide an even volume over all six strings and a sustain that my Washburn MG would never have on its own. The only down side is that the pots were pre-wired to fit a Strat, not an RG knock-off, so I couldn't put in the tone pot. I doubt it would have fit with the battery in the same cavity anyway. Plus, those black-faced pickups just make a guitar look mean... :)

I think I very possible made my best CD purchase ever, a minute ago at = Music Blvd. I followed the $10 off link someone posted three jams, or = so, back. I had previously earned $5 off since I happened to visit their = site as it was rebuilt and told them to mail me when it re-opened. With = that mail came the discount.
So I ended up gettin the Japanese Hollow Years single for $4.33 = including tax & postage. I love online CD shopping, and it's going to = kill me financially one day. But with these kind of bargains I'd already = be dead of too much beer, alzheimers, cancer, old age or whatever.

I keep seeing people say Derek left the list for this reason. I could be wrong, but I don't believe this is true. Sure, some dickhead was faking emails at the time Derek left the list, but if I remember correctly, Derek said something to the effect of "The tour is over so I'm taking a vacation now and unsubbing from the list", which makes me think that while he's on vacation he simply doesn't want to be bothered by Digests in his inbox five times a day, and NOT because of the riff-raff that was going on here at the time. I bet once the goings-on at the DT ranch are in full swing again that Derek will be back.

>3 >o|. > >Think of the bottom thingie being a dotted quarter. So basically, the time >signature was "3 dotted quarters in a bar." That is an instance where >music strays from the traditional power-of-two-in-bottom. ummm, isn't that exactly what 9/8 is? for compound meter, the bottom note is the division of the beat, not the beat itself. so 9/8 9 eighth notes, or 3 groups of 3 eighth notes, or 3 dotted quarter notes. since the eighth notes are the division of the beat, the actual beat is the dotted quarter. it's like the beginning of Take the Time, when the whole band enters. it's in 6/8, I believe, but you don't tap your foot 6 times per measure, you tap it twice, once for each dotted quarter, each having three eighth notes, for a total of six.
>The question is, if I don't have Dream Theater backing me up, but just have my >hands banging on the hood of a police officer's car as he checks my pants for >concealed weapons, which of my hands gets "the beat? actually, in that case, I think the beat is the "one" when both your hands hit the hood simultaneously, and the extra smacks of the hood are duple and triple divisions of the beat, respectively.
>Anyway, the woman said "Forget 7-16, check DIS." and she signaled to some guys >on her right and began what was a repeating pattern of 5 hits, with every 12th >hit being accented by her accompanying conga drummers. that's not 5/12. that's a phrase of 5 with every 12th not accented. It sounds pretty damn cool, but it isn't 5/12. It's just some cool syncopation. if anything, the 12 should be on top. accenting every xth note does not determine the bottom number in a key sig. That's more likely to affect the top number. in standard notation, there is no 12th note, but it is technically possible to divide the beat to make notes of equivalent value, but you got me as to how to write it.

well, I don't know of any dedicated music schools around here, but UT Austin (my school) has pretty much a good everything, and University of North Texas in Denton has one of the best music programs in the state. A good thing about UT is the massive amount of funding for top-notch facilities and equipment (even though a majority of it is going into the Darrel K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium expansion [say that five times fast!]). Of course, Juliard is great for Classical training (although it makes you more of a musical snob than most of us 'jammers) and Berklee is great for Jazz and Rock. If you can afford it, I would strongly suggest either of these schools. I remember a few years back there was a Guitar Player/World/For the Practicing Musician (i forget which) that talks about a whole bunch of different schools, but that's mostly for guitarists, and I don't know what you play. you may want to check the web for that article if you're interested.
