            First of all . . . some people do get to see more than one show.
    Cities are close enough that it's not too inconvenient for many to see
    multiple shows in a short period of time.
            Also . . . why would anyone want to see what everyone else sees?
    If anything, I would think that seeing something unique is much better than
    seeing a standard, rigid "show" that is the same everywhere and everynight,
    no matter what the mood of the performers is, the location, etc.
            Many bands have too many good songs that warrant live performance
    to fit into one set list. By looking at each concert as a unique entity
    instead of as merely specific occurances of "the show," things are usually
    much more fresh and interesting.

            Uh . . . this is from the same person. Let's use our heads here.
    It turns out that, if artists have a larger repertoire of songs that they
    can draw from for each concert, there is a much better chance of obscure
    songs like "The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun" being played _at least_
    sometimes. Sometimes is better than never in such cases. Standard sets
    usually contain fewer rarites (usually one or two of the same ones on an
    entire tour). In that case, it would be impossible to hear live recordings
    (official or otherwise) of most rare songs in a band's catalog, much less
    see such songs played live.
            Ever notice that there are only two songs Dream Theater has
    released commercially that they have never played live? This is a very low
    number, even for a band that has relatively few albums. That's because
    they (wisely) realize, to some extent, that standard sets blow (even when
    they're by bands that certainly don't blow, i.e. Rush). I commend Dream
    Theater for varying their set lists, and I hope they continue to do so to
    some extent.
            When I finally get a band together, don't bother coming to see it
    if you agree with the person quoting above. You'll be disappointed.

            It's called "Ben Kenobi's Theme," and it is reoccurs (in various
    forms) throughout the movie. I believe Mr. Petrucci plays it, since I
    remember seeing him do it in Boston on December 13, 1997 (I believe)
    between "Burning My Soul" and "Voices." At the time, I considered it as
    part of the end of "Burning My Soul," but perhaps it's in the beginning of
    "Voices."

            I'm pleasantly surprised to see that Greg Howard has been mentioned
    here. I highly recommend his music (which, unfortunately, is only
    available through him I believe) while stressing that it is not rock.
    Also, it is not overtly solo-oriented (unless his newer recordings are
    different than his older ones). The only reason I know of him is that I
    studied with him (no, not Chapman Stick). Now that he's getting more
    attention for working with Dave Matthews Band, maybe he'll be able to play
    venues larger than bookstores and coffee shops.

    I finally got my CD and video from the Time Warner site and it just =
    rocks!!!! I was SOOOO surprised to see how well they performed live =
    now. The latest video I have ever seen was the "WOWOW" show from Japan =

    I made 3 unsuccessful attempts to locate 5YIAL at the best record stores here
    in Columbia. Funny thing is they all had plenty copies of OIAL and the old
    LIT video. Hmmm. So, after my ill luck with the "most likely to have 5YIAL
    places"...I called Best Buy on a whim, expecting to hear "Dream who??"....BUT,
    the actual response I got was "yeah dude, we have 3 copies". That didn't
    register at first....so after picking up my jaw from the floor and asking him
    if he was sure and said "yes", you can bet your sweet ass I was crusin' up the
    inny to snatch me a copy! It was $19.95 (not too bad). Plus some more good
    news....when I get there only TWO copies remained. So....I guess I'm not the
    only die-hard DT fan in Columbia, SC! Maybe the other one subscribes to this
    list......???

    I guess the best arguement to that would be to take a step back and look at
    the setlist for the Falling into Infinite tour. Notice how it all blended
    together, how thematic it was? There weren't many parts on the disc where a
    song simply ended, the band paused, and then jumped into the next song.
    IMO, I thought that in itself was VERY impressive and was something that
    obviously had alot of thought put into it. I can only imagine how damn
    difficult it must be for DT to pull off what they do in the studio, but then
    they come out onto the stage and do it LIVE and have fun with it. I mean,
    if they were just playing song by song like Megadeth does, and played the
    same setlist everynight, I could see reason to complain. But begging for
    deviation on such a thematic setlist is like expecting Titanic to end
    differently each time you watch it. :P

    Besides, as I mentioned before, the average DT concert-goer is likely to
    only go and see them once. I like Megadeth alot, but I probably would only
    see them once if they played in town two nights in a row, regardless of
    setlists. DT obviously put on a damn great show using this setlist through
    the tour and I think it would be stupid to deprive everyone the priviledge
    of such a show simply because a small minority wanted variation. It'd
    be like shouting "The Lady Wore Black" while QR were halfway through
    Operation: Livecrime, IMO.

    Now, if they played the same setlist every tour (like, as you mentioned,
    some bands do)... I think that would be a legitimate gripe... But I don't
    see that happening much with DT, yet. :)

    And I think Mike Portnoy would agree.

    First, I would like to thank DT for being the greatest creation of a band ever known to mankind and making these gems. Highlights for me so far: DS piano solo and lines, Darkest of Winters into the Turbo version of Ytsejam, JP solo, MP solo, Tamp is phenomenal, and PS is amazing. I think this was definitely Dereks shinning moment so far. JLB sounds really good, much better than LATM. The video is awesome as well. I love that acoustic stuff. Anna Lee, Lifting Shadows, Speak to me, and TLF just blew me away. I kind of dug the heavy stuff they were jamming, but what was up with that 'Barney" guy singing. I thought he really sucked.     I received the video on Monday, and I must say that's it's completely amazing! I really enjoy the variety on it especially! The same holds true for the CD (which I got Tuesday)! Just fucking phenomenal! This is one of those (in)famous "if I were stranded on a desert island, what 10 CD's would I want with me......." CD's!

    My favorite thing about both the CD and video: The keys. The first thing I thought upon first viewing (and first listening), was "WTF? I can hear the fucking keyboards? What's goin' on here? Oh, and Derek's playing completely and utterly rocks on both!

    I also have one Q for the Jammers. On track one of disc one, do you guys hear a (fairly obvious) 'click' sorta noise, at approximately 1:25? I just want to make sure my precious disc isn't screwed up!

    Okay, so I'm like uh....3 days behind in sending any kind of the regular fanboy extaticism post, but I see the other AZ ytsecrew have already informed ya that

    Meetin' all the ytsecats i haven't seen since...uh...the Dream Theater show in May I guess...was awesome. (See, I'm still alive and postin'!) It was so nice of the bouncers at the door to play peek-a-boo with the crowd waiting outside to catch a glimpse of the Kit of the Gods being set up inside this 2 story alternative-trend-rock club being used for a talent show (go figure, eh?). Things overheard while waiting outside the club were, "Shit, I haven't seen you since the Dream Theater show," "Did you hear about the New Year's Eve gig," "Ah shit. I'm surrounded by drummers," and, "What did the guitarist do when he locked himself out of the car...damn...i forgot the punchline."

    So anyways...the clinic. We're finally allowed to enter the inner sanctum where the dj was blasting the new Liquid Tension Experiment album through the PA and some ingenious architect had dabbled in the wonderful use of black light as a primary light source, so all these hopeful musicians and drummers alike would have to strain their eyes filling out Guitar Center info slips for a random drawing of free crap.

    Just after getting all the greets and hellos in to those jammers/friends I hadn't met outside the club, some bananahead reject from a Ted Danson look-alike contest in a red plaid tuxido and yellow sun glasses jumps out onto the stage and starts talkin' smack about our homie Mike Portnoy. "BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH IT MUST BE IN THE WATER!" This guy was so damn obnoxious even I was ready to jump on stage and beat the crap out of him. Our buddy Dangerous Dan from Guitar Center Tempe was just bein' cut off left and right trying to introduce/announce the contestants of the drum off--OH the drum off;

    I had never experienced anything like this before in my life, but if yall ever get a chance to catch one of 'em, they're definitely worth your time (heheheh, especially a regional match like Monday's....) The first contestant was this fat guy from CO wearin' this CRAZY yellow and black shirt and the dude WAILED....rocked out, had the stick flippin' goin on and everything. A couple teenagers and a 14 year old jellybean later, and the local hero JAY comes out onto the stage and a deafening roar shot through the roof of the two story club. Yeah, he won.

    So after all these antics, Portnoy takes the stage, gets behind the kit, and spits in approval before wailin' on...well...wailin': Paradigm Shift, the Metropolis instrumental section (backup vocals by the Ytsejam psycho ward choir), a drum solo medley and all done on a skipping CD player. Amazingly, Mikey stayed with the player after it skipped a second here, a second there, a minute there. Now, I'm a guitar player by practice, I don't know crap about the drumming thing (I think I should learn a little though,) but Mike started nailin' himself upside the head en tempo with his fist, makin' squinty constipation faces at me the whole time; is this some sort of percussionist secret I should know about?

    ANYWAAAAYs...I've rambled on far too long for my own good. Back to the grind....

    This New Year's Eve the Bank One Ballpark in downtown Phoenix, Arizona will be opening its doors (and roof) to its first big time concert. Well, that isn't the exciting part, it's who's performing:

    Black Sabbath, Pantera, Megadeth, Slayer, Soulfly, and more to be announced/confirmed!

    Concerts like this don't happen very often in the States (I can hear the foreign jammers who've been to those European/Brazilian festivals snickering as I type this) so you can pretty much expect this thing to be HUGE. REALLY HUGE.     I am going to throw out all my Dream Theater CDs. I am going to become a Celine Dion fan.

    Personally, I think it all started with James LaBrie. If DT had seized the opportunity when Dominici left to get a sexy babe female singer, DT would be at the top of the charts here. Instead, they got a guy who looks like Robert Plant, and everyone knows that Ageing Rockers (and their lookalikes) are destined for perpetual ridicule by the British music press.

    first listen, this "Tin Can and Car Tires", with it's cover art of a redneck's backyard is sounding mighty mighty sweet, so much so that if it holds up to repeated listenings, a definite top 5 of the year candidate.......
