No, not as big as Connecticut, but Cheap Trick. Some misguided fool said that
the new DT could be as big as "Live at Budokan" was for CT. I have to laugh.
Nothing against DT, but they don't have ANY songs as commercial, catchy, and
poppy as "Surrender" or "I Want You to Want Me." This is NOT a bad thing, I
might add. You gotta face the facts that DT's material does not lend itself
well to commercial consumption - at least not on that scale. My opinion.

This is on my cd too, it's not a cd problem though, I'm sure it's just
James' track, a problem during recording maybe? I'm glad they included
Voices anyway, it is such a kicking track and the version on OIAL is
incredible. I love how JP cuts off the guitar just before the first bit
of singing (the quiet bit), it is very cool indeed.

It depends though. Listening to Hollow Years and Take Away My Pain from
OiaL on the way to work I realized how damn good those songs sounded live
and how radio friendly they sounded. Oh, yes... May I add the comment...
Kevin who? Oh, LaBrie? :) (I still love Kevin, but I'm a full fledged
    Derek convertee now.) :)

    >>The thing I want to point out is the sound clipping (sound failure?) in

Notice how the clipping is so conveniently placed at the points where James
voice starts cracking? :) It's so we listen and go "Did James just croak
there or was that Mike using his snare mic for a ride cymbal?"

Humorous DT content for the day: I just love the way the crowd kept trying
to clap along with the band in various parts (especially JP's solo) and then
the tempo would suddenly boost or the song would change times and the crowd
would suddenly be lost. :) I could just see John P.'s face when the crowd
was clapping to his solo. "You think you can clap with me... No one can
clap with me! I am above the LAW!!!!" Then he'd start playing faster than
even Paul Reubens could slap hand to gland.

    Just my thoughts. :)

OK, some thoughts. First, Mike is the man !! He promised a truckload of material and is coming through on the promise. And Christmas is right around the corner. Oddly, however, I haven't heard as much on the following issues that I had expected so far. Soooo, here goes.

    a) First and foremost, "where are the drums in the mix" ?? Yes, I can hear them but I guess that I am just a sucker for getting my ribcage rocked a bit more.

    b) Doesn't KJL sound great when he is a little more restrained ??

    c) Who did DS pay off to get such prominent placement in this thing ?? If only we could hear him close to this when they play live (shit, I hope that Vinny isn't on the list or he will kick my ass into tomorrow ...... or ask if I want advice on how to pick up the trash).

    d) There *had* to be some vocal overdubs. Had to be.

hello everybody.. someone asked what the click noise was on disc 1 ,track 1..time 1.25 ... i think it is just JP checking if he turned on the volume on his guitar(or some sort of check) i think this must be it because almost all guitar players,i have worked with, check if the turned on their volume ... also the characteristics of the sound makes you think of a guitar...

    anyone has a beter alternative???

So I get home after buying OIAL, and it works just great, but then I put it in my car CD player, and it makes the hissing sound, and proceeds to skip every 2 seconds or so. This is the only CD that my car does this to, and the CD looks perfectly brand new without a single scratch on it. Has anyone else had a problem like this with car CD players? It's almost as if it can't even grip the CD properly. I can't listen to this CD on road trips, which really bites. Also, I wish they didn't cut Scarred so short, but other than that it's a cool CD. Sometimes it almost sounds so good that you don't really get that gritty feel of a live record, and it almost seems like an alternate studio version. Maybe then it's just a testimony to how tight a band they are! Anyways...

Hey, 'jammers. I got my OiaL on Tuesday from CDnow, and the first thing I noticed was that it didn't have the little "2CD" logo found on the slimline case of my housmate Matt's disc bought at Sam Goody. So, oh well I thought.

However, a possible explanation came to me last night as I was casually glancing at the lettering around the edge of the disc itself. As I glanced, I was alarmed to read, "The record company may demand return of the CD upon request." WTF! I thought. Reading backwards, the magical words, "For Promotional Use Only" appeared. Did anyone else get one of these from CDnow? Why would they sell me a promotional copy? It boggles the mind. Anyway, it's pretty cool, just thought I'd add my 2 cents to the OiaL lore.

BTW, the vid kicks ass. Kudos the Mr. Portnoy. My favorite part is Barney Greenway singing Damage, Inc. Classic. Well, gotta run. Remember, there's no such thing as playing a stereo too loud when DT is in it...

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids....

Listening to Fates Warning's newest "Still Life" on my way home from work today, I started wondering a couple things:

    1) What in the blue fuck is the crowd chanting at the start of "Ivory Gate of Dreams"? It sounds for all the world like "tes-ti-cle, tes-ti-cle", but I hope to hell that isn't it. Anybody wanna hazard a guess?

    2) How many of the solos are Jim Matheos and how many are Bernie Versailles? When Fates toured my town on the APSOG tour, Jim was the only guitarist on hand, so I don't know how much of the smoking leads are his and how many of 'em are Versailles'. Can somebody who saw the tour with Bernie on hand give a rough approximation?

    ta, Phil

Just curious, I just got my OiaL from CDNow delivered to my work (damn...2 hours until I can listen to it!! AAaarrrghhh!). As I was checking out the actual discs, I notice that there is green text around the edge stating "For promotional use only. Sale or other transfer is prohibited. Must be returned on demand of recording company." I've seen this disclaimer on promo stuff before (usually with a big embossed stamp on the cover), but never on an actual consumer release. I just thought it was pretty strange. Does everyone else have this on their discs?

Looks like my 5YiaL won't be here until tomorrow....I can't wait for the weekend (and the drive home tonight)!

Whoever mentioned LaBrie's "Steve Perry" picture on the inside cover was dead on! Heheh..

The new DT font is alright (although I was just getting used to the FII font!), and I really like Storm's new cover...much better than FII (my nipple).

BTW...for any Denver area 'jammers. I've done a little research into next month's Mike Portnoy Drum Clinic. The info is as follows:

    Mike Portnoy Drum Clinic Rupp's Drums 303-756-5777 2045 S. Holly Denver, CO Saturday, November 21, 1998 6:00pm Tickets: $8.00

Guess I'll be making a trip down to south Denver for my tickets real soon! HEY MIKE...do you mind if I bring my camcorder along? I know that last time you were in the area (Arvada, CO), several people had cameras. Is this a decision made by the people who put on the clinic, or you? What better treat...a double CD, a video, and a drum clinic...all in a month's time! Thanks to you Mike, for your neverending efforts to provide us, your fans, with as much that is Dream Theater as possible (I still can't believe that you talked E/W into a double CD AND a video! That clicking noise is most likely Petrucci accidentally (actually I don't think he does anything by accident) hitting a muted a string with a pick or something before he comes in for the heavy part of ACoS. The first 1:25 is recorded (not played live by the band), except for MAYBE the drums/cymbals leading into the heavy part, but I don't know about that.

I'll third that. I not only preordered the CD and Vid from CDNow, but then I couldn't wait the whole day to see if the FedEx man would show up, so I slipped into Best Buy and slipped out with both, for just $40.73. When the CD showed up(later the day of release), my coworker(who I just recently turned on to DT) said that he would just take both from me, so I didn't even have to return them to Best Buy(the CDNow versions).

In summary: Got to hear OiaL the morning of release, got to see 5YiaL that night, and made a new DT fan, all in ONE DAY. Is this a great time to be alive, OR WHAT?
