    Hey,
So I did my research and determined that there is one head that sounds
like its just what I'm looking for: Rivera's S-120. That's if I'm dead set
on stereo, which I may not be. But this thing sounds like the shizznitt
from a spec standpoint: 2 channels with a footswitch-selectable gain boost
on each, "claims" to go from Fender to Marshall tones with two separate
pre-amps (we'll see on that), chorus, 6-spring reverb, switchable impedance
for different cabinet configurations, 60wattsx2. Now the bitch of it will
be finding a dealer with it IN STOCK. But the Knuckleheads and M series
come close to the specs of the S-120, so I'll be on the lookout.
But on the flip side, I did start doing some field research and went to my
local mom-and-pop music store, where I was directed to the Crate BV-120H
(Blue Voodoo). Not bad, but the clean channel wasn't very warm and had NO
boost/gain option. It did have separate EQs and reverb for each channel and
did spread nicely from overdrive to crunch on the second channel with a
gain tweak, but I don't want to be playing with dials all night to go from
blues to metal (yeah, I know: try a Triaxis). The price was reasonable: he
said they had it retailing at around $750, which meant he'd come down. But
I will be trying out some more stuff before I even consider this.
On the down side, I tested the amp with a Washburn WM100, and that is one
of the most uncomfortable guitars I've ever handled. Granted, it had a set
neck and Duncans, but who would pay the money they're asking for it?
And on another note, I hope to be hitting the East Coast Music Mall this
weekend in Southern CT (not Cheap Trick) where they just got the Ibanez RG
520QS in according to their website. Methinks I'll be testing a few amps
    with that little number!

Stodgers is beginning to feel a lot like Xmas...

What I think that person meant was that OIAL could be the turning point album
for DT, much the same as "Live at Budokan" was for Cheap Trick and "Alive!"
was for KISS. Those were groundbreaking albums for those bands, and there are
more that I just can't think of right now because I'm way too tired to wrack
my brains. It was most likely not a comparison of the styles of music.

Of course, there's every possibility that DT could be as huge as CT, the
state. They could crush it like Godzilla, and then the entire east coast of
the United States would shake in utter terror at the horrific majesty (pun
intended!) of Dream Theater!!!!! Of course, I could just be really, REALLY
tired and in need of a nicotine fix and some herb tea. ::::shrug::::

    Hello,

    >Does the fact that CDNow is shipping promotional copies
    >of OiaL bother anyone else?

This would bother me. I have a simple suggestion: CDNow has a 30-day
guarantee policy, if I'm not mistaken. Send back the CD you got and either
buy it from a store or buy a new copy from CDNow. I can't believe that
Elektra would just say "sell everyone promos" and wash their hands of it.
Record companies aren't that stupid. They want to see a cut of the sales
figures. This is a case where I have to say that we should support the boys
despite a small inconvenience... Of course, my disc is fine, so I can say
    what I want, can't I?

<<However, a possible explanation came to me last night as I was casually
glancing at the lettering around the edge of the disc itself. As I
glanced, I was alarmed to read, "The record company may demand return of
the CD upon request." WTF! I thought. Reading backwards, the magical
words, "For Promotional Use Only" appeared. Did anyone else get one of
these from CDnow? Why would they sell me a promotional copy? It boggles
the mind. Anyway, it's pretty cool, just thought I'd add my 2 cents to
    the OiaL lore.>>

Mine has that too! I just got mine today from CD Now, with no "2CD" on the
side, and sure enough, on the edge of the disc "for promotional use only."
    Pretty weird.

WOW!!! OiaL is awesome! Sounds amazing and you actually can hear
everything! Great job Mike and friends!!!! Thanks!

But what I want to state is the jamming throughout the discs. I
remember back a few months ago when there was a rather large discussion
on why DT doesn't jam during concerts. Well, just play TTT and tell me
there's no jamming going on there. Just a little thing I noticed.

NDTC: Does anyone know if Billy Sheehan and Bobby Sheehan (Blues
Traveler) are brothers? They both have the same last name (obviously),
both play bass and damn it's just ironic if you ask me.

    That's all for now folks.

Supwitchall-- Phil asked what the crowd was chanting before Ivory Gates on Still Life, hoping it wasn't "TES-TI-CLE! TES-TI-CLE!" I was wondering the same thing, though I heard "Let's get stoned! Let's get stoned!" :) This is such an awesome album. It's so cool at the acoustic intro to Ivory Gates, when the crowd realizes what it is and starts going nuts. Gives me chills. And then the excitement in the air during "The Eleventh Hour" before that riff (you know the one) kicks in...and to hear Ray sing "Prelude to Ruin"...pure bliss. Live albums with smaller (by comparison) crowds are cooler in some ways to me, because it's easier to feel the individual excitement by hearing specific people as opposed to one big wall of noise. Makes you feel like you're there. Now, if only my OIAL would hurry the heck up and get here... Still waiting on the vid too, but I had to confiscate it from a friend for one night to watch; I couldn't wait for my own copy to arrive. And what an awesome video it is! I was laying on my bed with my guitar in hand, playing along with Damage, Inc., until Barney started singing and I couldn't play anymore for violent laughter...that was SO funny and really cool to see. Anyway, enough outta me.

Well, finally had time to actually sit down, without interruption (argh), and watch the vid in its entirety as well as listening to both CDs in their completeness.

I, for one, am most pleased.

About the only thing I could find wrong, anywhere, and this was really nitpicking, was the complete absence of New Millennium. But ah well, we can't have it all. Especially when we get some of the choice tenderloin grade-A cuts that were presented on the video!!!

An acoustic Cover My Eyes! Anna Lee?!? TLF!! Geez, it goes on and on. More and more stuff that you "just don't hear live every day". The video was "Compiled by Mike Portnoy" and it SHOWS. 99% of the stuff on that video is exactly what the hardcore fans would want to hear most. I specifically didn't read any spoilers so that I'd be surprised when the stuff got released, and I'm glad I did so, because it just increased my pleasure at seeing and hearing it for the first time. One little aside: jeers to Mike for just borrowing tracks from the WOWOW 1/24/95 broadcast... like we hadn't seen it already or something. ;) I'd rather have seen those Foundations Forum performances of those songs (6:00 and Voices) with Jordan Rudess... like in the PAL broadcast from MTV Europe that was brief but tantalizing. At least the WOWOW Voices was beyond compare.

Furthermore, ABSOLUTE HIGH FIVE to Mike for including all the MTV-format VIDEOS on this tape. It ain't easy to get a copy of the Hollow Years video... until now!! And Silent Man... heh... looks a lot better not in PAL, wouldn't you say? Lie, we had all seen, but it ain't exactly still in rotation. Very, very shrewd move.

I know it sounds like I'm just kissing ass all over, but after experiencing this new release, these are my honest and sincere opinions. It is a live CD and album set that any hardcore fan can be proud to have. It's... so... well... so NOT like A Show Of Hands (which I was NOT happy with the content of, in general. I mean, ONE song from Signals?!? Yipes! Not good!). All the extras were just gravy... the verdict was already in. I get such a charge from the accents and changes to stuff like Metropolis and Take The Time that I can't even listen to the Images disc anymore... it had been bootlegs for a while, but now OIAL will get some pretty regular rotation at Wizard's Tower.

By the by, sat in a smoky dive to see King's X and Galactic Cowboys the other night. Cheers to Nate Bradley and Mike Kizer, who I spotted at the show. It was overall decent... except for perhaps the venue, Mason Jar, where we are lucky DT won't ever play.

The Cowboys had a WEIRD... with a capital W... setlist. I was half impressed and half disappointed. Lots of stuff from the new album, as expected, and well-chosen IMHO... Ants, Where Do I Sign, Bright Horizons, Mr Magnet, Ranch on Mars. I expected Killer and Mrs Leslie from SIYF and there they were... but what's this in the middle of the show? Oh man... they broke out Where Are You Now!!! COOL! I don't know if it had been performed live on previous tours.. it certainly isn't on any of the bootlegs of GC that I've heard. Nothing but Pump from the first album, that's right, no Sea of Tranquility. Drag. From Fish, they played Stress and 9th of June, both decent choices. From Horse, I think the only song we got was Tilt-a-whirl. This is a big bummer because we did not get to see GC on the Horse tour. No Evil Twin, no Oregon, no Media Slant, no Mona Lisa, no Ribbon, no Breakthrough, etc. GC cancelled their Horse tour show due to illness... so I guess I'll need a DAT from somewhere. Monty wasn't as animated as usual, but was still pretty damned hyper. Wally was fantastic... I'd say near flawless. As for the new drummer... I was impressed. Technically speaking he blows Alan Doss away. But it'll be hard to get used to the loss of such a crucial part of the GC engine. And Ben was consistent as always.

King's X was just awesome. I mean they were good last time, but even more so this time DESPITE no It's Love (like it hadn't been played before, of course). They even played Go To Hell! Surprise city. Born to be Loved, A Box, Visions, Lost in Germany... and about five selections from Tape Head, the best of which was Groove Machine. Over My Head was typically emotional and yet not overlong. Ty was having a great time, especially after a fan lent him a ballcap so he could keep the light out of his eyes. :) There's not much to say about KX because the show was a lot like the last one... and that means GOOD. One point... they had a sweet T-shirt that said "10 Years of King's X" on it that I didn't get to pick up due to lack of funds... I just hope Metal Blade has some left over after the tour because they're cheaper that way anyhow.

As for "more"... well, nothing really. I won't talk CDs because there's nothing new to say... finishing out of orders continues. I guess that's it. Enjoy your new DT!!! Can't wait for Different Stages!!

Speaking of misguided.... If "Surrender" & "I Want You To Want Me" were released today, they would be flops. It's all in the timing. I have played The Ytsejam several times to metal heads, they love it! Play the same guys ACOS and they say "Play something cool." I think Ytsejam & Lie could make it in the heavy metal arena. And the live versions on OIAL are impressive, even to idiots.

Hey! It's the late 90's, damn near the new millennium. It don't need to be poppy... It needs to be choppy! Let General J.P. Petrucci lead the way!

    Hey

Bruce Dickinson in Tallinn... Yesterday. Hell yeah. Constant, accurate, intense. He proved he can still sing and is probably in better a shape than most of the attenders. Adrian Smith and Eddie Casillas need some workout, though. :-)

Lots of Chemical Wedding stuff, some from Accident Of Birth (The Darkside Of Aquarius and Road To Hell), two tunes from Balls To Picasso, Tattooed Millionaire and some mandatory Maiden songs were performed. What can I say? Dead on, nothing more, nothing less.

I've yet to hear anything, though. Never in my entire lifetime have I encountered such hearing loss after a rock concert and I know I've been to a few.

In short, go see it, they'll put on a good show, but forget not your earplugs and stay away from drunken moshpits.

To add some Dream Theater content to it... Today I'll try to pick up some latest releases. ;-) And, as usual, Chroma Key kicks major butt - and there've been nothing but rave reviews among people who I've played it for.

    Too much information, only useless.

<< Does the fact that CDNow is shipping promotional copies of OiaL bother anyone else? If these are really promotional copies, and aren't simply the only thing that CDNow could get from Elektra to send early to people (which may be the case since everyone seems to be getting them), then something seems to be wrong here. If these were really promotional, then CDNow got them for free, which means they're pocketing every dime that we sent them. Now, DT may not get much from each sale, but I at least like to think that $1.10 of my $17 is going towards supporting John P's new kid. >> If your copy has this stamp on it then it is definitely a promo from the label and no money goes to the band. Some bands' contracts actually stipulate that they pay for all promo materials (including posters and promo cds)...so DT may not only NOT be getting their royalties from these promos, they may even be paying for them! I have no idea if this is the case or not with DT, however. This is very disappointing if CDNow is doing this....sounds pretty suspicious to me. You might want to check and see if the barcode on the back of the cd has a whole punched in it. The fact that these cds have a stamp on them does not make them any more or less valuable...it just means the band doesn't get their money. Very lame... -Kyle

Amen to this. I can hear everyone fine except Myung. A good bassist's sound is the kind that you don't notice if it *is* there, but you miss if it's *not* - but this time around, you don't notice it because it's not there. This surprised me, expecially since Shirley pushed him so far up in the mix on FII. Maybe he pissed the soundman off?

On the flipside of that coin, Sherinian must have paid said soundman VAST amounts of money. He sounds friggin' GREAT. :)
