as ever, and all three tracks are awesome.

I would guess that it's not really a promo, that maybe they accidentally
printed that on all of the CDs, or maybe elektra had leftover promos and
shipped em as regular CDs, as in, selling em. The reason i say this is that
i have both a promo version and an officialy bought version (advance ordered
from cdnow), and the promo version has not only the writing around the Cd,
but a big stamp in gold letters on the front cover that says the same thing,
"For promotional use only. Sale or other transfer is prohibited. Must be
returned on demand of recording company." (BTW promos don't have the hole in
the UPC code or the side drilled, just the gold stamp). So if your CD
doesn't have the big gold stamp, then i'd guess that normal CDs accidentally
got printed with the promo message. Moo.

Yup,
Got mine from CDNOW as well and it too has promo only on it. Didn't
notice this at first. So... where is the rest of the concert? Is Mike
planning on another little `surprise'? I'm thinkin' Christmas CD and
I'd better send $20 across the pond to get it. Not that I'd ever join
a fan club, just want the CD.
This thing sounds too perfect to be a live concert. I usually hate
live CD's because the sound is too thin, or they don't play it right
but this is more than I expected. Until now, I've never REALLY heard
TTT. Wow! The video kicks as well. Love the unplugged part-could've
done without the chopped up MTV videos. Don't get me wrong-I just
hate chopped radio edits of any kind. They wrote the song long for a
reason.
Not sure what to think of the promo versions CDNOW is palming off.
Could it be possible that the band still gets money from this due to
a special deal? Mike? Beuhler? Anyone...?

Watching the video it looks as though JP and DS both play the entire
"Trade Off" JLMB solo together, I could be wrong and I'm sure I'll be
corrected if that's the case. Ok, a question for those of us who appear
to have got Promo copies of OIAL, hands up all those that will be
sending you promo back to CDNOW with a stiff letter.....thought so - I
won't be either. Quick thoughts on 5YIAL, the unplugged stuff is awsome
- STM and LSOAD are completely breath taking - I love this stuff so
much! And the best quote... "Making history...and you?" Cracks me up,

Fellow ytsejammers and 'jammerets
now that I've got your attention... blablabla...
Seriously, there seems to be a strange vibration about this DT band
recently. German Rockmagazines are permanently mentioning the probability
of Dream Theater breaking up. Especially in every article about one of the
projects (LTE/Platypus/Explorer's Club...).
Mike "animal" Portnoy: got any comments?
On OiaL:
Although it's a great live recording, with a very clear yet heavy production,
i have one problem with this album: the lack of spontaneity.
Sure the soloes are outstanding, but...
Maybe I'm a little sensitive about this since I was listening for 2 straight
weeks to my old Frank Zappa albums. As you might know, most of his stuff
consists
of live-recordings and these recordings really deserve the description
"live" although sometimes heavy overdubbed. This is no contradiction, since
I'm referring to the feelings that are caught within the musical content.
Imho the question still is "Does humor belong in music", and I still think
the answer is YES => I'd really like to see OFB do more improv. jams.
BTW, no sign of the 5yiaL video in Germany yet.
Phish's Story of the ghost isn't available over her either.. guess I have to
order it from CDnow.
Recent purchases:
Queens of the Stoneage - QotS: cool stoner rock, could be heavier
sometimes.. 7/10
Eldritch - El Nino: great heavy/prog album 9/10
Weissglut - Etwas kommt in deine Welt: album of the week!!! Really heavy
sound and
great german lyrics. 10/10

Last night's yahoo/sonicchat was cool, but slightly dissappointing. I
would have hoped for a more informal gathering, but it seemed instead
sort of like a PR conference. But Mike, thanks for doing it and it was
definitley a killer event.
And now, the rest of this post is dedicated to jose, the
peurto-rrrrrican(suave) jammer.
Jose, you punk:
You clearly have no understanding of netiquette, and you were probably
one of the people last night that kept asking, OVER and OVER, "Is mike
here?" "Is this the chat?" "Hey, where's mike?" "Hey, how do you ask a
question?" "Hey, where's Mike?" "this sucks!"
I asked three or four questions and one of them got through. Each time I
used a different question. You probably used the same question, over and
over again, and do you think that might piss off the moderator? Yes! And
did you bother to learn what the caps-lock key means before you asked
your questions over and over? I bet, No!
BTW, Puerto Rico looks damn nice in the commercials. Quite a place, I
hear. but you're still a punk.

Ok, I listened to the entire album twice now, and let me say that it truly
rocks. I do have the clicking sounds as well, but they are brief and I was so
into the music that I hardly noticed. Its a live album, what the hell can you
do? Anyway, I was able to locate all the inserts except PlatOpus. I have
never heard the album, so I wouldn't know what to look for. My only guess was
at the beginning of Scarred. Is that where, somebody please let me know. One
last comment, Petrucci's solo got me out of my seat, absolutely amazing.

My CD's have the promo warning, too. Only, I didn't buy the album from CD
now. Mine came from a local store. And they had quite a few copies. I
wonder if they were all promos... Hopefully there's a reasonable
explanation for all this promo nonsense (like a printer mistake), because
the band deserves every cent that they can get from OIAL. BTW, this is my

I happen to like the fact that JM isn't so loud this time around. You
can still hear him on the disc. The few times I've seen them live, the
bass has been so loud and distorted it's actually annoying. It takes
away from being able to hear all of the intricate things that JM is
doing and drowns out many other sounds that are going on at the moment.
Perhaps the next wave of CD technology will have each instrument's track
seperately accessible, so you can re-master the individual tracks and
mix 'em anyway you want. "I........am........STUDIO MAN......read 'em
weep, Shirley BOYEEEE"!
> On the flipside of that coin, Sherinian must have paid said soundman VAST
> amounts of money. He sounds friggin' GREAT. :)
Maybe a nice blonde swing dancer? :)
Or perhaps they just got tired of all the bitching about him on the jam
:) Not that I'm trying to start another K v. D debate or anything...
MUHAHAHAHAHAHA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some more impressions:
The audience seems to be enjoying themselves somewhat :)
I've only heard some songs on it, but no complaints here. In fact, I
haven't even listened to an entire song yet, because the kid in me gets
too anxious. I look at the liner note thingies and go "OOOO, OOOO, JLMB,
no....wait...um....heh heh ...yeah....LITS....yeah that tune kicks
ass...no....wait....gotta hear that part again where JP plays faster
than the electronics can sample!!!" :)
The transition/bridge/whatever_it's_called into PULL ME UNDER is
shuhweeet!
I really like the acoustic piano shiz in YTSEJAM.
Mike is as always: expressive and tight.
I'm sorry, but JP is not playing some parts of that solo. He's got a
little pedal switch where he can put it on auto-pilot and the super
computer takes over. Human bone joints simply can't tolerate that kind
of speed.
Imagine some kind of Monty Python like skit where JP's gets it up around
300 BPM, his hands come flying off, and the truly sick and twisted (no,
not me, fool :)) fans in the audience rabidly fight over the airborne
digits, just so they can scan them in for their web page.
"I went to a a DT concert, and damnit, all I got was this middle
finger!"
:)
Only one negative:
Tower didn't have the video the first night. Guess they ran out of room
on the delivery truck, what with the REM/Phish/etc. taking precedence.
Dickmunches!
disclaimer: I don't necessarily hate REM/Phish/etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This whole thing with the cover tunes just doesn't seem to affect me the
way it does some, I guess. I could be in the minority, but I just don't
care whether they play something original or not. There'll be plenty of
original tunes coming from DT in the years to come.
I know that when they do cover a tune, that it'll be a fresh twist on an
old idea, yet still respect it enough to capture the 'flavor' of the
original. I've heard some of those tunes so many times, I know all the
little subtlties in them, and it's fun to hear what the guys do with the
various parts. You can hear the audience identifying with it.
Ditto the above when it comes to composing something that some consider
more slanted to the 'commercial' side versus 'pure prog' or 'prog metal'
side. Someone mentioned variety? Well it comes in all different flavors,
not just during a song but the song itself as well. THAT's what keeps me
listening to these guys as much as anything else (like prog or metal).
You just never know what they're going to surprise you with next. I take
a song for what it is, not for what it isn't compared to some other
song(s). These guys re-invent themselves over the course of one album,
even!
Regards,
Jon

That's because it's not really a "trade-off" solo, it's a full-on
guitar/keyboard duet. In the studio, Kevin Shirley punched in and out on
the final mix to get the feel of it being a trade off, even though both
musicians were playing the thing all the way through. That's evident on
the DT Christmas CD '97.
