First off who is Hank Marvin?

Steve Stevens is probably best known for his work with Michael Jackson.
You know the Thriller album, maybe others. I think he also played on
some of or all of Vince Neil's solo discs.

I finally received the Empty Tremor demo. The band is not bad and
definitely has potential. So far I feel the songs lack cohesion and the
production (as others have mentioned) isn't that great. I dont think
they are worth the hype that the Arash bros have shoved in our faces,
    but they are good.

    Some more cd reviews:
    Black N Blue-One Night Only-live
Not proggy but I like them. I bought this disc at Powermad. The booth I
bought it from also had their first cd for $75! That's crazy. Black N
BLue was one of those 80's hard rock bands that should have made it big
during that time but for some reason they didn't. This disc is good but
either the production is lacking or the band hasn't played together for
quite awhile. The studio versions are much better.

    Angra-Holy Live
Bought this at Powermad for $8. Angra live. The band sounds great live.
They are definitely a band worth seeing live if I ever have the chance.

I really wouldn't call him famous for it, but he sure is good at it. Some of that Spanish stuff he does on Black Light Syndrome kicks incredible ass. That whole song, actually, is chock full of really awesome playing from the three. It has to be one of the best two songs on that album.

there's a patch on my roommate's Korg X3 that sounds almost exactly like it. I just noodled around with some different notes in that basic Seinfeldian rhythm, and nearly got it. it's pretty cool. But I gotta go buy Terry Bozzio's new album now, so I shall bid ya'll a "see you later!"

I just received Charlie's "Vintage Clips" video. The video is a home movie but it has been professionally mastered with effects. A very nice job in my opinion. It includes complete versions of AFiL, TOWHtStS, and a version of Crossroads. It also has footage of the band clowning around. The autographed photo IS a reproduction but it is on Kodak Photograph paper and really doesn't look like a copy. All in all, it is definitely worth the money. If you were thinking of ordering but were not sure if it was a scam or not, it isn't. I recommend it for collectors or even just fans.

Open letter to the jerk who started that stupid Derek rumor:

Dear Moron, The next time you think of starting up the rumor mill, DON'T. If you were trying to be funny, guess again. Did you think Derek would be AMUSED by that? What the hell is wrong with you??? I mean, what possessed you to post something so completely idiotic and totally uncool? It was positively SLANDEROUS, and I'm absolutely HORRIFIED that a fellow Dream Theater fan would be foolish enough to do something like that to someone in the band! Having Derek (and Mike, as well) participating in the Ytsejam digest is the coolest thing a fan could ask for. How many other performers get this involved with their fans? Not many, let me tell you.

Derek happens to be one of the SWEETEST people I've ever known (famous or otherwise), and I'm PROUD to call him my friend. I'm simply OUTRAGED that someone would be so mean to him, especially when he takes the time to get so involved with his fans.

Get something straight: Lies suck, slander is not cool, and you are a callous butthead. 'Nuff said.

Sincerely, Derek's VERY pissed-off friend and business associate, Christina

Ok, today I am going to talk about a cd that had a strange effect on me. It is Therion's Vovin.

Style: Celtic Frost-y doom/death with opera-ish (not operatic) vocals

Musicianship: Not bad, but no one is going to mistake them for virtuosos, either.

Songs: They get a bit same-y after awhile. See conclusion.

Background: I wanted to get rid of that annoying Explorers Club cd, so I put out a trade notice on the Perpetual Motion board. Minutes later someone offered to make this trade. I said ok. Got the cd at Powermad, and listened to it on the way up on Saturday. Hey, this is great!

Conclusions: It sounded a lot like Frost's "Into the Pandemonium." However, after repeated listens, this cd started to bore me. The only tune that stands out is the one that Ralf Scheepers sings on. It really doesn't fit with the thematic tone of the cd, and maybe that's why I like it. The cd is nice, but it's one of those things you have to be in the mood for. I would recommend it to those who enjoyed Celtic Frost, or are looking for a little expansion of the Death genre, but otherwise, steer clear.

This one is the disc I have been listening to the past two days. Mercyful Fate's "Dead Again." If they were trying to get across a message of repetitiveness, they succeeded.

Background: I always liked Mercyful Fate, but the stuff they have put out since the reformation has bored me semi-stiff.

Vocals/Lyrics: King Diamond. You like him or you don't. I usually do. But. Big but. The lyrics absolutely suck. How many times is King Diamond going to sing lines like, "Confess, witch" ??? Didn't we already hear that shit on "The Eye"? How about more references to Lucifer and Satan? How about allusions to "666" and the number "9"??? But, taking the cake is the title track, a satanic stream-of-consciousness dreamstate that unintentionally brings the theme to the old "Garry Shandling Show" to mind ("this is the theme to Garry's show...") and has some really lame rhyme patterns that would embarass a seventh grade budding rapper. When he sings the line, "Why do I keep on doing this?" I can't help but ask myself that same thing. Vocal styles include the normal lunatic, grandma, and the rest of his familiar voices. Blah.

Musicianship: Not bad. Not anything like the heyday of King Diamond (the band). Enough interest is raised for me to at least listen a few times. This is not Mercyful Fate, in my opinion. Only Shermann and Diamond remain, so this is more like King Diamond (the band) - Part Two. Blah.

Conclusion: Don't buy it unless you are an idiot like me who has to have everything certain artists put out. Buy a copy of "Melissa" instead. Or "Abigail." Or "Them." But not this, and not "Time," either.

Just got my copy of the new album today, can't beat Elektra reps there pretty damn fast. My rep got five copies and sent one of those to me, one out of five in the Philly area, pretty damn good. Well all of you don't care really about that so let me go on with the cd review and shit.

First let me say that I haven't made it all the way through yet, I'm on disc two listening to an amazing version of "Take Away my Pain" with the sax guy who I guess was supposed to play on Another Day. BTW, anyone know what will happen with the Acoustic show?

Of course by now everyone knows the setlist. Look for a different version of Derek's solo then from the American dates of the tour, drum solo is pretty much the same. "Lines in the Sand", "Scarred" and "Voices" all stick out early on for me. These are my favorite studio songs and the live versions on the disc translate very well.

Just now hearing the transition from TAMP to CiaW, and I don't like it that much, to fast. CiaW, however, sounds amazing. This is the best I have ever heard the backing vocals by the guys. I loved when the started doing it but thought Mike and John needed a little work, of course comparing them to James is a lofty thing. But the vocals on this album sound amazing.

Once again Kevin Shirley did an amazing job on production. I'll post more when I finish the second disc. Comments welcome and encourged.

BTW, the offical date on the Dream Theater "Once in a LIVEtime" cd is Oct. 27th.

I also got a copy of the new Shadow Gallery cd last week. I have gotten to listen to it about two or three times. Look for a more straight forward cd then Carved in Stone. To me it seems like they are trying to get new fans, and they relize that the fans they have are still going to stick around. A lot less of the mellow keyboards and more of the guitars and metal side of the band. The cd contains sort of a concept which I am not going to try to explain but it has two acts, and every song perfectly follows the preceding one.

James Labrie is near perfect on vocals, a doubles up a lead, rather then sings back up. So this makes this cd a must purchase for DT collecters.

All in all I don't think you Shadow Gallery fans will be upset :)

I hope it wont be just a picture of the band playing live....I hope it will be real artwork....

one question: did anyone notice that the cover for "FII" on CD was slightly different from the cover on the tape?

I think the guy who did this cover did some for Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, am I right? is this the first time he works with real people?

Now THAT'S what I call a squash, hehe. Sure would be nice if all rumors got killed this way. I think it's kind of sad that DS himself had to post in reply to this rumor, in the same way that I thought it was pretty bizarre that DS had to send in a post a while back where he ACTUALLY defended himself on this list and cited his credentials, "free scholarship to Berklee", and so on. You know, this isn't the kind of interaction I'd like to see between DT members. It really should be more like the exchange that MP seems to have going with this mailing list (correcting people's misconceptions about who makes up the set-list for DT's shows, correcting mis-statements about song-writing contributions to DT songs, commenting on discussions concerning time-sigs, etc.). But I guess DS doesn't deserve to have that kind of rapport with this list because, hey, he's just a replacement for Kevin till the band finds a REAL keyboardist.
