I received the following notice from Denver (Colorado) Sidewalk this
    morning:

    Events :

    -- Dream Theater --
    Guild of Ages
    9/17 -- Eck's Saloon
Original '80s-ish drama rockers in the vein of Dream Theater.
    http://denver.sidewalk.com/detail?EID=33997

    -- Dream Theater --
    Guild of Ages
    9/22 -- Live Rock Pile
'80s drama rockers in the vein of Dream Theater and Zebra.
    http://denver.sidewalk.com/detail?EID=34079

    '80's Drama Rockers...hmmmmm...that's a new one for me. I won't take that
as a slam, though. They don't have any additional information on this band
at these links. Has anyone heard of Guild of Ages before? If so, are they
any good? I'm particularly curious if they play covers. Does anyone in the
Denver area want to check them out with me? I haven't found anyone around
here that will go see live bands (unless it's Big Head Todd, Phish,
    Widespread Panic, etc).

DTC...(well, at least Platypus content) -

Since I live in the states, and I couldn't wait January for the new Platypus
CD, I went ahead and ordered through TeleCD. I understand now that there
are several online US companies carrying this as an import. I don't know
which ones, though. It took them about 2 weeks to get my CD to me. It was
actually shipped from California, rather than having to go through customs
from Germany. I've only been able to listen to it 1.5 times, but on first
    listen, I really like it.

Ty Tabor Primer - for those of you who don't listen to King's X, there are a
couple of things you should know about Ty Tabor. First off, Ty is quite
white. By this I mean that he does not have the incredibly strong soulful
voice that Doug Pinnick has. This may be a plus for some of you who didn't
really care much for Doug's additions to LiTS. Ty's vocals are very
"Beatle-ish", and this shows through on several Platypus tracks (both in
vocal performance and vocal recording techniques). Many of Ty's vocals are
often layered with fantastic harmonies, particularly on choruses. The
second thing about Ty is that he is NOT a shredder. Although he can and
does play some very technical parts, he is more about tone and feeling than
lots of notes. Ty is probably one of the best at using volume swell
techniques (think: intro to Scarred), and it's peppered all over Platypus.
None of this is to say that Platypus doesn't have plenty of ripping leads,
both from Ty and Derek...it's just tempered by Ty's occasionally understated
    playing.

The CD is about half instrumental and half songs with vocals, performed by
Ty (and Derek in Platt Opus). Ty wrote all of the lyrics. I haven't
listened enough to give a song by song review, but I can say Platt Opus is
fantastic! It really showcases everyone involved. Derek is very aggressive
on this tune (makes Crack in the Mirror sound like a ballad). The guys did
a good job of producing the album themselves, and Ty Tabor was quite up to
the task of mixing and engineering. John M. shines on several of the
tunes...but most of the time functions much as he does with DT, holding down
the groove with Rod Morgenstein. Rod isn't MP...but he's quite good,
slipping in some odd time sig. stuff occasionally and really amazing me with
some of his high-hat work (this CD begs for headphones!). I'm sure that
I'll get lots of mileage out of this CD. The people at the stoplights seem
    to like it! ;-) heheh...

Last thing...thanks to whoever it was that posted the free CD offer from
Music Blvd. There isn't much of a selection for the free CD, but I did find
Al DiMeola's Elegant Gypsy. I've read a lot of good things about Al here on
the jam, so I'm giving it a shot. With shipping, it only cost me $2.99!
    What do I have to lose?! One nice thing that I noticed about Music Blvd;
they give you a choice of MP3 (two different qualities for those with low
bandwidth) or RealAudio samples for CDs in their catalog. I've dealt with
CDNow in the past, and they only have RA (cRAp) samples. What little I
heard of several songs off of Elegant Gypsy makes me anxious to hear it all
    the way through.

Well, if I post much more, I'm going to get nothing but a rejection notice
onto the jam...so I'll shut up (and play my guitar).

    Hey all,
            On the epic Dune:

    >dune - with sting, music by toto and brian eno, I saw this when i was very
    >little and wanted to watch it again to see if I was missing something
    good,
    >I found it boring...

Read the book, then watch the movie. The movie is almost like the Cliff
Notes for Frank Herbert's novel. Apparently, there is a ton of footage that
did not make David Lynch's final cut but was included in an unauthorized
edition. The movie is visually quite astounding, IMHO, but the plot lacks
and drags due to information that wasn't included in the adaptation. Note
that this was David Lynch's first AND last attempt to garner any box office
for one of his films. You can see his influence quite clearly when you
compare this to his other movies like Blue Velvet and Lost Highway.
Someone wants good movie rentals? That AFI top 100 list has a lot of great
movies, but left a few out. :) So I'll give you what are in my opinion the
    best of each genre:

INDIE - Zero Effect; This movie, like our beloved Dream Theater, defies any
explanation save that it is incredible. Some amazing performances, a great
script, and a deceiving plot make this one to watch. My pick for the best
    film this year.

    SCI-FI - 2001: A Space Odyssey; I'm assuming you've seen the Star Wars
Trilogy, so I have this Kubrick masterwork instead. It is the most
incredibly philosophical movie ever made with astounding visuals. And keep
in mind that when this was mde, no man had set foot on the moon.

WESTERN - The Wild Bunch; Sam Peckinpah's definitive work surpasses
everything in close competition. The opening sequence is among the best
    ever conceived on film.

HORROR - The Shining; Kubrick again, combined with an "over-the-top"
performance by Jack Nicholson create the most frightening film ever made.
Turn out the lights, lock the doors, and get ready.

WAR - The Bridge on the River Kwai; The best war movie ever made, and it
doesn't even have a real battle scene. David Lean created movies about war
that made you concentrate on the characters more than the action. Also
    recommended: Glory.

ACTION - Operation: Condor; Making the assumption that you've seen the
Indiana Jones movies, I recommend this Jackie Chan flick as it has the most
insane action sequences and Jackie's best cornball humor. But Face/Off
would be a close second, though I think far more people have seen it.

THRILLER - Mission: Impossible; Too many people mistake this for an action
movie and are disappointed. But this is Brian De Palma which means its a
thriller, and an amazing one at that. The "clean room" sequence still gets
    me.

ROMANTIC COMEDY - LA Story; The only movie to effectively capture a man's
view of romance. and hey, its Steve Martin so you can hardly go wrong
    there.

SLAPSTICK COMEDY - Hot Shots; No explanation necessary, I hope.

DRAMA - Braveheart; If you've seen it, see it again. And again. And again.
    You get the point.

CRIME - Jackie Brown; Since Out of Sight isn't on video yet, go get this.
Elmore Leonard is the best crime fiction writer around, and Tarantino does
better here than on Pulp Fiction mostly because the characters seem less
    stylized. Yeah, crucify me.

These are among my list of must-see-often movies:

    Comedies:
Spaceballs (the best movie in the world! Ever!)
    Three Amigos
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Princess Bride (Buttercup is one hot honey!)
History of the World, Part 1 (another Mel Brooks Classic)
    The Breakfast Club
Sixteen Candles (Long Duck Dong says it all!)
    UHF (weird al 'Da MAN!)

    Not Comedies:
The Black Cauldron (the only Disney cartoon to not have a G rating)
    Goodfellas
    Star Wars Trilogy
    Spice World
    The Ususal Suspects
    Reservoir Dogs
TITANIC (Leo is just soooooo cute!)
    John Petrucci Rock Discipline
    Dream Theater: Live in Tokyo
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (this one is pretty weird, but not
    lusciously so)
Long Kiss Goodnight (this has some awesome action!)

BTW, everyoe needs to go see Pi. it is one of the coolest movies I've seen
in a long time. It's sorta like David Lynch's Eraserhead, only everything
makes sense and there is actually a plot to follow. And the soundtrack is
    Phat!

I just got this in the mail yesterday, and I was quite shocked. Not
necessarily in a bad way, mind you, but shocked nonetheless. I have
"Behind," and I think it's a very good almost-prog-metal record. Great
musicianship, and all that sort of thing. But, here comes the new one,
"Younique." I think that was a very apt name for the disc because it
*is* quite unique. At times while listening to it the first three
times I was reminded of Mordred and even Faith No More. It took a
great deal of balls, in my estimation, to put out this record. It is
not the way to get a huge audience, but it shows that Superior are
actual artist/musicians and not wannabe moneymakers. I kind of see
this as their "Holy Land," if you will. Any band that can incorporate
wacka-wacka porno guitar, female background singers that remind me of
the chicks from Duran Duran's "Reflex" video (showing my age here),
lounge lizard jazz riffs, Deep Purple-ish keyboards, and
balls-and-chunk crunch, all within the same song has my respect.

CD of the Day: Superior - Younique

    Ok, this is it:

    * Genesis have made a 4CD boxed set with material from the Gabriel years.
It is mostly for people that loves early Genesis. Lots of rarities, not so
many hits (understatement..) You saw a documentary about this.

    * Gabriel and Hackett have rerecorded some parts for live tracks, and so
are involved. The footage you saw presumably was from the press conference
at an UK airport, where even the old drummer John Silver turned up.

    * There are no plans for reunion album or concert.

    Well....here goes...

Paul "The Man" Cashman delivered as promised. The CD was in the mailbox
    today. Naturally, I played it.

Rather than going into a track by track review, I would rather just
make a summation point. This CD is different...different from Behind.
In fact, it's like a 180 degree from Behind. It is good, but tuned
down from the Behind type music we are all used to. I would have to
say that this CD is very mellow in comparison to Behind, but it
still retains the excellent musicianship the fellows behind Superior
    hold.

If you have never heard Superior before, it will be no big deal to you.
However, if you have been listening to Behind for a while, you will
reel back in the change their music has taken. It is a good disk,
just a bit different. Like Bernd said on #Ytsejam, you're in for a
    surprise with YOUnique.

    Take care,

    Jeff E.

"Oh! Oh! I see the sky; it's becoming a very, very bright red, almost
an orange, a red-orange. And it's like I'm suspended, and the light is
so bright it hurts my eyes. And I see this huge ball. Now in the
    center - it's, it's a gray colored ball, almost - oh, I don't know
what it's made of, but a rock - like formation. But as it's turning
now, it's beginning to change color, becoming a purplish, hazy, orange
    - looking ball. And now it's beginning to gather great speed. And as
it's going faster across the sky, part of it has broken off now, and
it's going now behind the sun. I see the huge ball of the sun. It's a
ball of fire. And this is another ball of fire. And a piece now is
broken off, and it's hitting into the sun. And there - oh! Oh! It's an
    explosion. Oh! I can't look. Oh - h - h! Oh - h - h!

Everything seems so still, and I see people now holding onto the
chairs in their houses. Everything's rocking. It - it's like the very
foundation is rocking in the houses. And they're all frightened. And
many are running into the streets. Oh, but others are running and
closing their windows. They're pulling down the shades. Oh! Oh! Others
are looking - I can see them looking through their windows, but they
do not go outside. They must not go outside. I see a great mist coming
in the sky - a great mist. And there are pieces of - they appear to be
    rock or dust rock falling.

And the people who are outside, they're stumbling. Something's
happening to them. They don't seem to - they're like drunk; they're
stumbling. And now the ones I'm watching, two of them have fallen.
They've fallen on their faces now, and they're trying to get up. Now
    they're - they're falling forward, and they're not moving. And I see
now this darkness - a great, great mist. And then a deep, musty -
looking haze, and it's now going and passing across the moon. And now
there's no moon; there's no light. The moon's absolutely covered. I
can't see it; there's no light.

Now the sun also seems to be shooting out particles - I don't
know - it's particles. And I can see this other ball that looks like a
small sun now; it's coming from behind. And it's still - it's
twirling, but it is also shooting out particles of, of rock, fiery rock.

Now one piece is very large, and it's falling down now, and as it
    - it's falling into the water. And then the water is just like
steaming and fizzling; and there was force, I guess, when it hit the
water, because the water is rising very, very high. Oh!"

hey folks, finally managed to get my stupid ass resubscribed. Ha! Just
goes to show the faq is always a good thing, whether you are a newbie or
not. in any case, I was staring at the schedule for Savatage's mini-tour
leg, and was wondering if anyone was planning on going to a show, and which
one they were planning on going to. I can't think of anyone who would be
going of my friends around here, which is a BIG bummer for me. I'm up for
the jersey or philly show on the 12/13, although the Jaxx would be more
convenient, as I'm in southern VA at the moment!! private email/posting is
    all good.

my Symph-X is STILL backordered from CDnow....two months later. Grrrr.....
