I'd say a good HEAVY band would be Nevermore (my favorite CD of theirs
being "The Politics of Ecstasy"). They have a good vocalist Warrel Dane
who doesn't sing in the high range (like the singers of most of my
favorite bands), but he has such power. The music... I wouldn't call it
prog at all, but it seems to be quite technical (keep in mind that I'm not
a musician). They're currently working on a new album "Dreaming Neon
Black" for all those who are curious as to what they're up to.

    > Conception: I've never heard 'em before......... could somebody tell me
    > something about these guys?

I usually call them melodic prog/power metal. Their vocalist Roy S. Khan
is in my top 5 favorite vocalists (in the company of JLB, Geoff Tate, Ray
Alder, and D.C. Cooper - to give you an idea of the kind of vocalists I
like, not to start a top whatever list). The rest of the band seem to be
good musicians as well (still keeping in mind that I'm not a musician).
I'd say Queensryche is an influence, though I hesitate to compare
Conception to any band. They definitely have their own style. And
Conception is a little heavier than Queensryche IMO.

All I can say about this fine work of fantasy and trying to make it
into a movie: Don't. I'm sure they (the Powers That Be in H-wood) are going
to try anyway, and massacre an incredible work. Any attempt at trying to
force 3 (or 4 if you count the Hobbit) long novels into 2 hrs is going to
be disaster. The animated version by Ralph Bakshi kicks major ass and is
more than enough and had to be split into two movies (it's too bad the
second one didn't look nearly as good as the first).
Regarding scoring of the soundtrack, they'll probably wind up recruiting
Danny Elfman, which would be cool, or James Horner (not so cool). Now,
another option could be to make a rock opera out of it and have Sean
Connery lip sync JLB <sarcasm>. But Mad Magazine already did something
like that with song parodies many many moons ago. In conclusion, it would
be nice if the movie could be done without ruining the story, but chances
    are slim.

This is a hillarious review, the guy literally sits there at the show watching DT do the take-offs on Pink Floyd and M*tallica during Peruvian Skies and then runs home to his computer going "there's no room for improv in DT". Alas, if they only could've had more time on stage to jam out Metropolis. Hell, yea! I saw them once live as starter for Psychotic Waltz (R.I.P. :-(..... there are two singers which makes them sort of interesting. i have no album though. but i think you can check out some mp3s on Moshes Feast. didnt like the demos too much, to be honest. seeing them live was cool, but on the tape it loses some magic. worth checking nevertheless.

PS:Dushko: MetII has already been recorded and is locked away in EastWests safe wiatin to be released. Mike said that in an interview with german mag "Heavy oder Was?" He said: "MetII is lying in the safe of our label an is waiting for its release. We have pushed to our limits all the progressive elements so that we sort of settled down for the other songs (of FII). Actually it should have been on FII, but we would have had to kick too many other songs." Qestion "what are we gonna get in MetII?" MP:"Sickness!! Totally overdrawn. We reworked a lot of elements from Part I and got totally into it. As we gained back our consciousness the thing had grown to 25 mins." Hey all, Reading all this speculation on the LotR soundtrack gets me laughing. I don't think Peter Jackson is going to have much of a choice on the music, that'll likely be up to the producers. Jackson isn't exactly a Hollywood name. I wouldn't go with a band at all anyway. Most movies that have non-orchestral soundtracks sound dated even after a short time. Queen's soundtrack to Highlander, though quite good, is WAY 80s. Then there's AC/DC's Maximum Overdrive stk. <gag> :P My choice as a composer for any dark, brooding movie is Danny Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands). For a cheerful, exciting film I'd take John Williams (Star Wars, anything Speilberg). And when you just want to cry your eyes out, there's James Horner (Braveheart, Glory). There are others in there (Vangelis was good for some stuff, as are Ennio Morricone and Maurice Jarre), but these are my top three. I see Elfman for the LotR saga. I believe he scored Jackson's The Frighteners (great movie), so he's got a leg up there.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids....

Busy, busy, busy. New jobs kick ass, but when you're also trying to change residences, find someone to take over your current lease, plan a weekend trip, AND keep up with the 'jams....well, it's tough sometimes. :)

Joe D wants to know: >Conception: I've never heard 'em before......... could somebody tell me >something about these guys?

They ruled. Conception was one of the best bands I'd ever heard. "In Your Multitude" has just about everything you need for a great prog-metal album: waves of atmospheric keyboards, crunching guitar riffs mixed in with neoclassical shredding, growling bass and drums, and haunting vocals from one of the top voices in metal today, Roy S. Khan. Sadly, they are now defunct, with Khan now fronting Kamelot.

Paul D remarked on the upcoming LOTR films: >Is Peter Jackson directing it like he has been rumoured to be doing >for the last two years??? >Coz I read an article in an New Zealand paper that said he was >casting......

Yes, he is directing. No, he is not the sole casting agent. Casting is being done now but no decisions have been made. And NO, Sean Connery is not going to play Gandalf. There is no way in hell they could afford him, and there's no way in hell he'd agree to live in New Zealand (where the films are being shot) for over a year while they filmed the movies.

http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/ for more info and an interview with Jackson (think that's the right address).

Brian H. inquired: >Has anyone heard the band "Payne's Gray"? What are they like? Are they >worth picking up?

Yes, outstanding, and definitely. Payne's Gray was my major discovery of the year this year (Symphony X was last year's) and I can't imagine why more people haven't heard of them, or listened to their amazing album "Kadath Decoded".

Imagine a concept album based on H.P. Lovecraft's "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath". Cool, huh? Well, add in some haunting music -- acoustic guitar, swirling flute, and quiet percussion -- to open the tale. Then kick it into progressive metal overdrive with a hammering wave of heavy guitars, bass and drums thundering like a chant to some dark god, with unexpectedly operatic vocals from two (yes, two) lead vocalists. Lush beds of symphonic keyboards mix with the waves of metal sound to create an amazing musical dreamland, and you'll be drawn right into it.

I consider it one of my life's missions to see to it that every prog fan buys this disc. :) More info on the band can be found at their official website:

Hi, on the comment of Japanese cd situation, I think that what you wrote is very precise. I am very surprised about this. I am not sure that Japanese version has better sounding thatn US or European version. I have only Japanese version of Images And Words, but I also enjoy the sound quality of all DT albums. One of my Japanese VH fan also told me that Japanese cd version seems to have better sounding, but I think quality of American/European/Japanese cds is almost same (I think...). I heard that if you know how to get a better sounding of cd, you cut on the surface very thininly (I do not know how..maybe, using sophisticated divice). Then you will get better sounding, but amatuer listners had better not try to do this. Because I do not want to hear the complains that this method might break your precious cd. If someone knows how to cut surface on the cd for getting better sounding, ask him/her who knows this kind of myth (cd sound quality).

Ok, basically I rather bought import cds from US and Europe at Tower Record or HMV when I was in Japan. The reason why I bought those cds at Tower Records is that 10$ cheaper than Domestic cds. I strongly bellieve that quality is not very different between US version and domestic version. If I can get some progressive cds and HR/HM cds, I tried to get cds from Tower Record as many as possible. It saves money big time.

In addition, some Japanese listeners need to read translated lyrics (because we have hard time to understand English =) and have hard time to catch what they are playing about. Therefore, liner notes and translated lyrics costs more money. Basically, if you go to Japan, you might spend buying cds about $20 to $24 dollar. That is why I avoid buying domestic cds.

Right now, I have been staying in Hawaii for long time. Therefore, sometimes I buy some imports cds from Japan (mainly Zero Corporation artists/groups). But it costs 25 dollar!!, but music is good, so I compromised buying some stuff (for example, Symphony X, Without Warning and Shotgun Symphony, Guild Of Age, and so on).

If you are curious about Japanese music scene, let me know. Right now, Vigilante, Zenith, Blindman, and Concerto Moon are hot Japanese HR/HM bands as well as United and Outrage.
