It's funny, Jon Oliva was talking about this very thing the other
day before the Savatage show. Despite the fact that Savatage has
something like 10 albums out in America in recent years, not one of them
has EVER gone gold. However, he does get royalties from two gold
records. One is the recent Trans-Siberian Orchestra Album, and the other
is from a song he did on a World Championship Wrestling album that he
worked on a couple of years ago. Strange, eh? He also alluded to the
fact that Atlantic only keeps Savatage on their label, since Trans
Siberian Orchestra made gold last year. That, my friends, is fucked up.

Oh, and for those interested, the new Trans Siberian Orchestra
will be out October 13th. Also, Jon has already started writing songs
for the next Savatage album which will be much more heavier than the last
    couple.

Just so I'm in there... the latest Helloween is "Better than raw", right?

I love the Kiske/Hansen-time of Helloween, but nowadays... let's just say that I wouldn't pay a nickle for BTR. Yuck! >-P

fearful of stating that I really get into Candlebox, but at least
someone broke the ice for me. This band definately kicks serious ass,
and would recommend checking out their latest disc Happy Pills,

I'll try to help. I'm not sure I'd put any of these bands as heavier than DT, but I'd place them at least as heavy as DT. I would say some prog metal bands with heavy stuff include Superior. I only own "Behind" so far, but there is plenty of guitar crunch throughout the album (though they have some ballads as well). Ivanhoe is another one. I only own "Polarized." This album isn't as progressive as DT or Superior, but there are a few good heavy songs on the album. From what I've seen the singer say on the Noise Records homepage, they will continue doing heavy stuff (it sounds like there first 2 albums may not have been quite as heavy). I'm not too familiar with Tad Marose (my brother owns 2 of their albums). The only song that I can hear in my head right now by them is "Trader of Souls," which starts out with a guitar crunch riff just as "The Mirror" does. Symphony X has too much classical influence to remind me of DT, but they do have progressive elements and they are heavy.

    Nate said...

    > Again, not trying to flame, just defending myself. My point is that >there's room for _some_ improv in DT. That's what I like about the >band, the variety.

It really depends, at least for me, on how you define improv. Alot of people have cited the Floyd and Metallica teasers in Peruvian Skies as examples of improvs. I personally can't call something they've done at _all_ their recent shows from the latter leg of the FII tour and the DP/ELP/DT tour an "improvisation." Something that's staged like that, even tho' it's different from the album version, is a rearrangement to me, not an improv. I agree with the original poster on the DP list - DT has _very_ little room for improvisation in their live shows. If you see something at a show you've never seen before, it's a damn good bet to say they'll do it at most, if not all, of their subsequent shows for that leg of the tour. This is the only problem I've ever had with DT's live stuff - if you didn't happen to be a huge fan of theirs going to multiple shows on any given leg of the tour would be more or less worthless... Take, for a perfect example, the several shows done in Europe before the release of FII (4/xx/97 - A Night of New Music With Dream Theater). The setlist was exactly the same for all those shows and you could tell that the crowd was much the same for all of them as well. Portnoy (I bleeve) said during one of those shows "anybody having deja vu?" The crowd knew what was coming and their intensity took a nosedive after the second or third show of that group. People started calling for different songs which eventually led James to ponder "what do you think we are - a fuckin' jukebox?" The band finally realized it tho', and at least threw in the first live Trial of Tears towards the end of that run (4/16/97). This problem (IMO) has gotten alot better recently and I attribute a good portion of that to Derek's influence. I'm not a Derek fan at all, but he does bring a much needed change of pace to the band. FII shows during the first leg were all based around the same framework (LITS, BMS -> Voices, etc). During '98 they tended to mix it up a bit more, tho', and it was very refreshing. Tho' they still used a basic framework for alot of their shows (ACOS 1/2 -> JLMB; closing with the Metrop/LTL/ACOS medely) they've started throwing in things like Anna Lee and Speak to Me (ugh) and changed the middle of the show pretty often. One thing I've gotta say about any show they do tho', they are - without fail - as tight as anyone could possibly ask for, and that's what keeps me listening.

Listening to a few recent tapes, I find myself actually agreeing wholeheartedly with something Mike Bahr said once about a year ago. Anyone who's watched the Bahr wars knew I had a good part in starting one or two of them (very unfortunately), but we are in total agreement over this one statement: James LaBrie is the MAN. He's only gotten better since the I&W tour with no apparent regression in sight. He is THE voice of DT and I really haven't heard anyone that could possibly replace him.

Also wanted to mention that I picked up Savatage's Dead Winter Dead on recomendation from the 'Jam and I'm extremely impressed with it. Thanks to everyone who pushed it....

That's my post for the month. <shameless plug> As always, anyone who'd like to _trade_ DT/prog boots please get in touch with me. </plug> Take care all...

Here is a theory that I heard that fits.

The briefcase is supposed to hold Marsellus Wallace's soul which was stolen by the devil. This theory is based on the fact that when you first see Marcellus Wallace (in the bar with Bruce Willis) you only see the back of his head which has a plaster on it. Apparently in the bible (I don't know cause I haven't read it), it states that the devil is supposed to remove your soul though the back of your neck, This explains the plaster, the code for the briefcase and the glow ( in a kind of corny way).

I hadn't notice this which is really annoying because I will probably have to watch it all again. Mind you according to statistics I should have watched it a lot more than I have (only about 3 or 4 times) to be an "average" human being.
