well first of all, let me tlel you never to get a fostex x-14. No one is
poor enough that they have to go that cheap. if a bum on the street wants
to get into 4-track recording, he should hold out till he can afford the
next level up. might as well use a tape deck. in fact, that'd be more
useful. i won't go into details unless you want me to, but let me just say
again, don't get it :) i dunno about the cheap tascam 4-track, tho. besides
that, it depends (like almost everything in life) on how much you want to
spend for features. There's the cheapie ones like the fostex x-14 and the
tascam porta-02 that cost circa $160, which usually have
one-track-at-a-time recording, the simplest mixer possible, probably 1
instrument and one mic in and maybe an RCA in if you're lucky (for
recording over a tape deck input or something like that). The next step up
is things like the tascam 414 or the fostex x-55 that are around $330
(quite a jump, that's why i went for the fostex x-14 initially) which have
a few more features like recording two or maybe 4 tracks at a time, usually
2 or 4 line inputs and 2 mic inputs, simple EQ (high/low), maybe dolby
noise reduction. After that come the $500 units such as the fostex x-77 and
the tascam 424 MKII (the one i'm currently lusting after). These will
probably have 4 mic and 4 line inputs, 3-band EQ (high/mid/low), auto punch
in/out (good for when you wanna try a solo over and over, you hit record
before the part and you've already told it where to start and stop
recording so it automatically starts recording exactly where you want it to
and you can be ready to play right there), full logic controls (electronic
hence more precise as opposed to the mechanical push a button in kind), and
multiple tape speeds (usually two - 1-7/8 ips and 3-3/4 ips - 1-7/8 is
normal tape speed, and 3-3/4 is a higher speed which gives you better
quality but less recording time on a tape), and it might have nice counter
features like return to zero and location points. Anything above this level
is either 8-track or digital or things like that - if you're getting that
you're either already involved with recording so you don't need help, or
you're one of those spolied rich kids who get the best of whatever they ask
for like in The Toy :) That's about it. Hope it helps. Any clarifications

Well, in an interview with Quentin, he only put the band-aid on the back of
Marcellus' head because he had a scar or something there that didn't look good
on the comera. Plus, he also said that even he doesn't know what was supposed
to be in the briefcase... of course I am sure that he has his ideas.....

I don't have any recording equipment to call my own either, but I saw an article recently in the premier issue of 'Home Recording' magazine (with Phil Ramone on the cover.... the producer of many bands, not someone from the Ramones :) ). There was an article in there showing reasonably priced (and this was list price) 4-tracks and 8-tracks for home recording. I expect that someone else will post with their own personal encounters with recording machines, but this is what I know for now. Later -

I'm not a musician, and I don't know what kind of schedules the record labels can keep in a pinch, but it sure sounds like they're cutting it close.

Actually you are thinking of an old Gypsy legend. Through salt behind your back to keep the Devil away. There are a lot of variations of this especially in the Romi culture (Gypsy culture).
There is no place in the Bible where anything like that is written (I know. I have read it :))

the first time i heard of LOTR may have been different than most. i was listening to a newly released Led Zepplin album (yeah, ages ago--their 2nd album i think) when i heard the lyrics, "...and Gollum and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her.. er, her... er, her... shit." (or sumptin' like that -- it's been awhile since i've heard this album and i've had waay tooo much fun since ;-)
immediately i was asking everyone, "Who the fsck is Gollum?" it didn't take long for someone to point me into the right direction. it's the only series of books that i can say that i've read 3x. really kewl. really glad LZ turned me onto one of the best set of fantasy books ever.

Try "Ever" from 1993, it's no concept album like "Subterranea" but at least as good. Their earlier stuff is more 80s-commercial-neo-prog, some great moments, but never as good as those later albums. Go to www.insideout.com for a brief history of the band (just saw that they "forget" the '86 album "Nine In A Pond Is Here" in the English bio for whatever reason).
