hell yea, i think i mentioned racer x a hundred times on the jam but nobody
noticed.
if you are into totally mind boggling shred stuff and ass kicking heavy
metal you gotta check out the racer x releases.
but i think its four albums. the first one called 'Street Lethal', the
second one (what an ingenious name!!) 'Second Heat' (which i am proud to
have a sealed original shrapnel vinyl, that i found for 5$ in a music store
in greece). after those milestones in heavy metal they released the 'Extreme
Volume' live LP containing (boring) solos of all members, worth purchasing
nevertheless.
and i know of a second live LP they released later, though it only contains
old material as well, since the group split up very soon :-(
thats the shit, nobody notices the good stuff. As says the sticker on the
Second Heat LP:
'SH features the twin guitar assault of PG and Bruce Bouillet, who combine
for some of the wildest playing the world's ever seen. A must for true
high_tech guitar fanatics as well as for those who enjoy well-crafted, hard
driving heavy metal.'
thanks for reading, ytsegreetings.

Hey folks...
In addition to the boots coming out of Japan that were listed by OAN
Records in the previous 'Jam there are a few more that will be available
soon. I'll give details as I get them. As it stands there are two
released from the first FII Jap run that are available (tho' fairly
difficult to find b/c of small print runs). One is called "Touring to
Theater" and is from 01/13/98 Nagoya Kouseinenkin Hall, Aichi, Japan. The
other is called "Looking Into Infinity" and is from the next night
(1/14/98). I've heard both and they're of good sound quality (Minidisc
source on one and DAT on the other). Good luck finding them outside of
Japan, however.
I've got those plus most of the rest of that run (1/9, 1/10, and 1/16 -
missing 1/12) on cassette if anyone is interested in a trade. I can't
trade the two above mentioned CD boots since I got all 5 of these shows
from the original tapers (and makers of the CDs) and they don't want to
reduce sales. <grrr - only way I could get him to trade them to me, tho'>
However, the three others are all excellent quality and include some
rarities (Nicky Lemmons, Nightmare Cinema). The 1/10 show (I believe) has
the strangest timed Ytsejam I've ever heard (not the FYS version).
This is all, of course, an advertisement for trading, but hey, someone
might be interested. :) I'm looking for recent (2nd American leg,
Japanese leg, 2nd Euro leg) FII tour boots and any DP/DT/ELP tour boots
anyone has available. Check out my list - URL is in my .sig... Take care
all...

At the risk of starting the "fastest guitarist" thread all over again (and
trying to beat Madsman to the punch, since he'll no doubt respond too),
here's a couple suggestions:
-- Anything by Tony MacAlpine ("Maximum Security", "Edge of Insanity" and
"Premonition" are probably good starting points)
-- Anything by Vinnie Moore ("Mind's Eye" and "Meltdown" are both good
starting points)
-- Anything by Joe Stump ("Supersonic Shred Machine" is fairly typical of
his stuff)
-- Ron Thal -- "The Adventures of Bumblefoot"
-- Anything by MICHAEL.ANGELO. (he plays on the Nitro albums as well as two
solo CDs including "No Boundaries"
-- Anything by Impelliteri (the band) or Chris Impelliteri (the solo artist)
-- Anything by George Bellas
-- Jason Becker -- "Perpetual Burn"
-- Marty Friedman -- "Dragon's Kiss"
And if you're looking for acoustic shred, well, that's a whole 'nother story:
-- Anything by Jesse Cook ("Gravity" and "Tempest" are both excellent)
-- Anything by Billy McLaughlin ("Fingerdance" is a great starting point)
-- Anything by Michael Hedges ("Aerial Boundaries" is his masterwork)
-- Oscar Lopez -- "Heat"
-- Anything by Bob Culbertson (Chapman Stick not guitar but has a very
acoustic feel to it -- "The Touch" and "Cafe San Francisco" are good
starting points)

I would like to publically congratulate Brian Cox on our 1st Anniversary.
One year ago today I sent Brian 4 DATs and $3 to cover return postage.
Brian was going to clone 4 Dream Theater shows for me. Instead, a year
later I have nothing. I have traded with many people, all over the world
and have never been screwed until Brian. I have told him in the past to
forget cloning the tapes and just send the 4 DATs back to me using the $3 I
sent him for postage. He will not even do that. I have to assume he never
will since he has not replied to an e-mail in almost 3 months.
I know some people feel that publically announcing a bad trader is not a
good idea because some are good traders that have some misfortune. I
disagree. I think reporting bad traders helps everyone in the long run. I
mean think about it. There is NO reason, outside of death, to have
someone's tapes for a year. Especially when I told him to skip cloning the
DATs and just send the blanks back using the money I sent him.
I apologize if I have offended anyone. My advice to everyone is do not
trade with Brian Cox.
Thanks,
Richard

Hello,
Since this is the second time I saw this post, I had to reply:
>1. Are all the songs taken from the Paris show?
Yes.
>2. Is it the Fasten Your Seatbelts version of the YtseJam?
Dunno.
>3. Do they play Caught in a Web or Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool
Garden?
CiaW. Obviously you haven't heard CiA9ITG, or you'd realize that the verses
have the same riff as New Millenium. Not a flame, just observing.
>4. Does Peruvian Skies include the snippets of Have a Cigar and Enter
>Sandman?
Yes.
>5. Do they actually play all of Metropolis Pt. 1 and Learning to Live or
do
>they shorten them significantly into a medley?
This is a medley including the ACOS VII section. Its worth hearing for the
seamless segues into each song, though large chunks of each are omitted.
>6. What are the track breakdowns and times?
Dunno.
Hope that helped you somewhat. I at least answered three question
definitively. As for your others, someone may have the answer, or you can
just buy the CD and find out, as I'm sure you will. :)

Hey Jammers,
I said I'd post it so here it is. This is what Newsday thought of
Age of Impact. I was surprised to see it even reviewed so might pass
it on. Gives a pretty good review too, but we already know its awsome
from listening to it...over and over and over... ;)
"Listeners nostalgic for well-executed dinosaur rock - and those too
young to have lived through its heyday - may well find the Explorer's
Club's prog-rock retro-pastiche quite enjoyable.
Trent Gardiner's classically 'epic' effort, graced by such grizzily
masters as Terry Bozzio on drums, Billy Sheehan on bass, and Yes'
Steve Howe guesting on acoustic guitar, is a technically brillant,
albeit, anachronistic, showcase of vintage '70s style guitar-god
virtuosity and overblown synth pomposity.
This is not the place to look for subtlety, irony or originality;
but neither is there any pretense of such. Listening to "Age of
Impact" is roughly analogous to winessing Ronk and Roll Hall of Famers
jamming together on stage and belting out Chuck Berry chestnuts. The
significance is in the gesture, not the performance - a respectful
tribute to defunct but undeniably profound musical traditions."
-Sept. 10, 1998 NY Newsday Nightbeat Section, p. C7
Too bad no mention of JP or KJLB. After all, JP was the main guitarist
practically! Oh well, i dont think it was that bad of a review. Very
wordy. Later.

Jam,
What do people recomend as good pop songs that are out there... I don't buy
pop CD's anymore, and through the miricle of mp3, I can get just the one
good song off of a pop album... I don't listen to the radio anymore (only
the prog stuff in my CD player) so I'm completely out of the loop as far as
good pop songs go... (more like popular rock songs, since I don't like rap,
and R&B is ok, but rock is better...) So, would someone who is slightly
more informed that I, please post a list of the good non-prog songs that are
out there worth listening to?
Thanks.

better than Kevin? Don't get me wrong, I love DT's music with KevMo, I&W
is my fav. album overall, but Derek has so much more variety in the sounds
he uses, the sounds are better (that might just be due to the technology
progressing btwn '94 and '97, though) and his parts are more interesting.
I'll admit that it took me a while to get used to Derek at first, but after
a year listening to DS and KM, I think DS is far superior, and I think FII
is second only to I&W. Kevin's parts in some of the older songs, esp. on
Awake, really annoy me now. For example, on CiaW, that main keybd theme is
a pretty cool part, but it sounds pretty lame with that string sound. The
organ on the intro of the Mirror is pretty tame, too, esp. compared to DS's
organ on LitS or Perfect Strangers. It seems like Kevin is stuck on string,
organ, and piano patches. DS tends to be much more expressive in his
playing as well, IMO.
Korg gear more than just about anything else in the keyboard world (esp.
the shiney ones! ;). Anyway, all you people who like Kevin Moore better
are on crack.

Of course you could pick up a compilation to get most overview of the
band's music, if that's what you're looking for. From normal studio
releases, I would suggest 'Leftoverture', it has 'Carry on Wayward Son'
on it plus many other good songs. Personally I like the
almost-instumental 'Magnum Opus' a lot.

essential shred guitar band. Of course the guys can shred (and also do),
but the songs (at least on 'Second Heat') have (annoying) singing on
them, and the guitar sound is also the typical 80's reverb-to-the-max
sound, which also IMO sucks. Anyway, I'd strongly suggest you to listen
the mentioned records/artists (including Racer X) to find out what suits
your taste best. In the list, I've included what I consider to be the
best of the best, so feel free to disagree.
