I wouldn't exactly call that review positive, although I would hardly call
it negative either. It just didn't come across as glowing. Let's see, they
called this album a rip off of dinosaur prog rock, called any kind of
technical ability overblown, and compared this album to old geezers
jamming at the rock and roll hall of fame. Funny, how they call this a
nostalgic look at dinosaur rock, but when a grunge band does a cover of
Neil Young, this is art. matchbox 20 is the most generic derivative crap I
have ever heard without a shred of originality or creativity. You want
originality? Ben Folds 5, and yet they aren't nearly as big.

Let me add to this. Non prog music, well, I will go a little way into the past as well. Firstly, I think Pearl Jam's first three albums are great. Lenny Kravitz is awesome, Ben Folds 5 is awesome, Live is pretty cool, Van Halen, Led Zeplin, Billy Joel, Journey, Styx, (semi prog, sorry), Phil Collins, (sorry, I do like some of his poppy stuff even though he is a sellout, his last two albums sucked, though), The dorrs, and I think ... I am out of ideas. Check them out.

Its amazing that when a DT fan finds something they don't like with DT, they tend to blame it on someone that isn't a DT band member. Or in Derek's case, a NEW member of DT (which is overextending the term "new"). Sure there are outside forces that shape the final product of a Dream Theater release, but why must it be as black and white as "good = Dream Theater member / bad = non- DT member"?

This is the first album I have heard from the band. To me they sound like a Brazilian Queensryche (must be the vocals) but also have DT and Rush influences. The guitar playing on Fireworks was pretty good but I must check out their previous stuff. Can someone enlighten me on album titles/info please?

    Many thanks.

    1. whenever it comes to rhythm changes like 4/4 -> 7/8 and then 4/4 again (or 6/8) whatever i get really confused..i can count in odd meters like 5/4 or 11/4 or 9/8 etc but not always..do ya know of any sites on the web that could enlighten me?

    ****************************************************************************** **

Well a tip would be to listen to the song over and over while learning it and then try to do it by FEEL. Problem is, once you start trying to count AND play the brain DOES get confused. If you really listen to the groove your brain will subconsciously take over the time thing. That's how I do it anyway ...

Someone requested updated information so here goes.

    1. All the songs where taken from the same night in Paris.

    2. It IS the "Fasten your Seatbeats" version of Ytsejam, and Mike does not give the "Derek S. on Keyboards, He wrote this" quote. Which as we all know is from Spinal Tap.

    3. They play the normal version of CiaW, not Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden.

    4. Peruvian Skies has there Metallica and Pink Floyd rip offs.

    5. They play the fucking LtL/Metropolis/ACOS VII medley instead of each individual song.

    6. As for the track list, check any DT web site. The first disc clocks 76 minutes and change, the second at just over 78.

Someone asked: "How do they remember all that shit?" (more or less)

D-man hit it right on the head. They put so much effort into writing it (and rehearsing it over and over and...) that they know the songs backwards and forwards. Hey, even if the song is a collaborative effort, once you practice something long enough, it's ingrained. The only problem I personally would have is on the solos--a lot of fans learn and memorize the solos and demand to hear exactly the same thing every time they hear the song. To me (which is IMO, for those of you with inferential disabiities), that becomes stagnant. But then, what do I know? Not having heard them live yet (I keep kicking myself but after a while it just hurts), I don't know what the band does in regard to faithfully recreating a studio version. Can't wait for the live joint! Peace and much love.

To anyone who could offer advice on a used Korg T1:

If you can buy one used, is it worth it? How much would you pay for a used T1 in working order?

I understand this one in particular has 88 keys - but that's all I've been able to find out so far (the guy who's selling it hasn't called back yet). Are they weighted? What's the polyphony of the T1? How many sounds do they have? Are they any good? Is there any way to add more sounds? Can you make new sounds?

All these questions and more - if anyone has helpful information, it would be appreciated - please respond by private e-mail, since most people on the 'Jam probably really didn't want to read this message, let alone any follow-ups.

    Thanks,

just to let everyone know, unless you have prior arrangements with me, there are no more XXL shirts available. At this time, and probably for the next several months, the largest shirt yu can get is the XL. I apologize for the inconvenience; this is a result of my underestimating the demand for the larger sizes.

If shirts continue to sell at this rate, I'll place another order in a few months, and at that time I'll make sure to get plenty of xxl, xxxl, and whatever else people need.

D-Man and others who don't know what the hell I'm talking about: I'm selling the new ytsejam shirt, pix and info on my page, see the sig, blah blah blah. you probably figured that out from the first two paragraphs, but i like to type. Ok I have to come out of lurk mode.

I know this is a bad post, but I have to speak my mind. Please refrain from the complaints. Derek is a great keyboardist IMHO. He has taken the role of the keyboardist and made it cool again. Just like back in the 60's & 70's they had John Lord, Keith Emmerson, and many other greats, today we have Derek. His sounds and style are in a league of their own. He can play circles around any of the keyboardists we hear in bands today and this is no exaggeration (let me tell you that there are some good musicians out there). His attitude and style give a bit of an edge to the somewhat boring prog scene (visually). And not only is he a great guy, but he actually puts up with our shit. So with that in mind I say goodbye to you all, I will go back in to lurk mode.

Steve Vai said long time ago that he was going to do this and now he says he's going to do it on a DVD, let's see what happens...

I wonder what would happen if the MP3 format begins to gain commercial power...I guess people like Prince (the artists or whatever he calls himself) will start releasing CDs full of MP3s....he releases a box set every year so I guess he would like the idea...

this would be cool, an enhanced EP of Dream Theater with metropolis 2 on it and on the enhanced part demos from DT and majesty era in MP3 format.... --- MP3 of the week - "The Ben Stiller Show Theme" By Dweezil Zappa http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/2025/
