If you want to steer away from prog for awile but still want to hear awsome players, step away from the distortion. Try a little Jazz. Some good selections (my opinion): Pat Metheny............the road to you Incognito.................100d and rising. A little funky Larry Carlton............renegade gentleman Frank Gambale........Thinking out loud Anything by Chick Corea's electric band. And older stuff like Duke Ellington if you can get into bebop.
Its really a fresh thing to listen to these cats play, and after awhile you'll be in the mood for prog again trust me I always go back to it.

They played PMU, CIaW, Lie, LSoaD, Voices and TTT with Jordan and I think this gig kicked serious ass!! It's unbelievable how quick Jordan learned these songs (exactly he didn't have the time to really learn it so he played from score on stage!). I hope you remember....I was the one that sent a real big ol nasty flame Derek's way about 2 months back. I ended up talking to Derek about it via email, approx a week or two later. I'm sorry to say folks, the boy won me over. He didn't have to listen to me ramble on to him with an apology. He could have turned around and said, "Fuck You, Frank," ..he didn't....Instead, he was forgiving....
Now a whole bunch of you are going to say that were not talking about Derek's personality, we're talking about his playing. Well I know a great deal of jammers are musicians that value their craft. Tell me, if playing and personality does not completely feed off of one another, then you should place your respective instruments in a box and take up Java programming or something.
Leave this Derek vs Kev debate where it belongs, in the trash. I can bitch all my life about wanting Greg Rolie over Jonathan Cain in Journey....but folks...that aint going to change a thing....I can bitch all I want about Sammy Hagar not being in VH....but folks, Eddie wants Van Halen to control...so that aint going to change a thing.....BUT HERE'S THE DIFFERENCE with this Derek vs Kev debate....Derek actually does a good job within Dream Theater, he's a great keyboardist....and let's not mention that he gets a lot more 'tang than anyone else.... Supwitchall-- I'm very puzzled about these reports of Fireworks being "a lot different" or "not as good." I'll say I liked Fireworks on first listen more than I've ever liked any Angra album on first listen. Now, obviously I can't say if it's better or worse yet; we'll see in a year or so. But as of now this is a very impressive album which exceeded my expectations (though I concede that my expectations were somewhat lowered by all the early comments about the album). True, there's practically none of the "Brazillian percussion" sections that were present on Holy Land, but Fireworks is much more progressive. It is more like Angels Cry than Holy Land; a lot more straightforward-metal-ish (but with more complexity, odd time sigs, etc.). If you want a great power metal platter, here it is. Nothing more, nothing less.

What is this "gray area" crap? Not every one has been on the jam since it started and if its supposed to be a forum to talk about the band then why not discuss the relative merits of KM and DS? If "veterans" are sick of it, tough shit. Complaining that we shouldn't discuss it is ridiculous. Besides, I'm kind of interested in hearing what people's perceptions of KM vs DS's styles are. For the record, no, I don't think its valid to say one's better than the other. But that's not the point. The point is to get insights into each ones playing (and writing) styles and get a better appreciation of how each one fits into each song. Arguing about who is better is kind of silly, but it can serve that purpose.

Has anybody heard the swedish prog band "Timescape" ? They are really good and they've a uniqe style. A cross from Dream Theater to Queensryche, Fates Warning and their own uniqe sound. I have their debut album "Two Worlds" and it's very good. "Timescape" are one of the best new prog bands I've heard. You can't describe their music because it has a little bit of everything. ]From heavy riffs to great keyboards to atmosphering and emotional moments. This fact makes "Two Worlds" something uniqe and especial. Hear the album and judge for your self. I love it. Check out Timescape's official site for sound clips :

Well, my name's Mike, so I'll answer. :)
I find that D-Man is absolutely correct. You spend so much time working on your own songs that they simply become automatic. What's funny is that I sometimes can't play the songs OUTSIDE the band setting - it's like my memory is tied to playing it as a band.
While some may say that our music isn't as complex as DT's - which I'd agree with - I was in a super-technical thrash band before Division, and I can still remember how to play most of that stuff, eight years later. Executing it is a different story... :)

No no, you see, we beat it into the ground SEVERAL times. We did it enough that Derek himself asked us to stop. Maybe someone should put it on some web page. But really, you don't need to. There's basically 2 opinions that different people state in different words:
1. Derek sucks. I want Kevin back!
2. Derek rocks. Kevin was cool tho.
I don't think i've seen anyone actually say Kevin sucked and they're glad that dirty bastard got kicked out of DT... but I digress. My point is, there you go. That's what everyone has to say about Derek vs. Kevin. Now, if you want to get individual responses from people to add them to an Excel worksheet and kill off all of the derek haters (or lovers, whichever you don't agree with) one by one while they listen to a DT CD with the aforementioned bandmember of your dislike, then I suggest you make a petition to start a new mailing list (you can't have enough DT mailing lists, I always say) and ask everyone to tell you whether they think derek sucks or not. Practice, Practice, Practice. Or at least that's part of it. I remember reading an interview with Alex Lifeson where he talked about the recording of "La Villa Strangiato." When they finished the song in the studio, the band's consensus was that there was no way they were ever going to remember all of it. But after a short time, Alex found he could play the whole thing while watching television. You just have to keep at it until playing the parts become second nature. I've found when playing that if I have to think about what I'm doing, I'm bound to make a mistake.
I'm not sure if writing the song vs. performing someone else's work comes into play or not, as I'd be hard pressed to play any of the songs off of my old albums at the moment. Of course, why anyone would want to hear me do this is another matter, perhaps best left for another time...

Good point. I should have though of that, since I want to be an Engineer/Producer myself. Wow. Maybe Shirley is my favorite member of DT! 'cause I actually really like the sound of all of FII. The bass finally sounds awesome (it just sounded good before, and I'm not taking into account performance, just tone) the drums sound great, and I obviously love the keys. hmmmmm...
