Hi there Fonzaloon and jammers all!!

The music from Clockwork Orange that DT start some of their concerts with is:
"Funeral for Queen Mary" by Henry Purcell, as adapted by Walter Carlow for the
    film.

Sadly we cannot get this film in the UK now because it is banned here,
although it is available everywhere else in Europe I believe.

DT keyboard player Derek Sherinian is featured on a tribute album to Emerson
Lake and Palmer which has just been finished in the studio.

I don't know the release date yet.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

    Brian D. wanted to know:

    >What is this "gray area" crap? Not every one has been on the jam since it
    >started and if its supposed to be a forum to talk about the band then why
    >not discuss the relative merits of KM and DS? If "veterans" are sick of it,
    >tough shit. Complaining that we shouldn't discuss it is ridiculous.

We wouldn't have a problem with it if people were to actually discuss their
different playing styles, the sounds they choose, their contributions to
the music or lyrics, or anything that is actually discussion of their
PLAYING. Instead, everyone who jumps on this seems to have an obsession
with determining who is "better". There's very little actual musical
discussion and it always degenerates into a slanging match (that's another
thing -- nearly everyone who puts in their two cents refuses to accept
    anyone else's two cents).

You wanna discuss their musical styles? Fine. But don't ask "Who do you
think is better, Derek or Kevin?" and expect to be welcomed with open arms.

    Ta,
    Phil

    Tee hee heeeeeeeeeee
It was a hypothetical question/suggestion, but Jordan Rudess I think has
actually played some gigs with DT, before DS joined full time. There I;ve
just seen Bugle's post which confirms the fact.

I'm looking forward to hearing Derek's playing on the ELP tribute album when
    it gets a release.

BTW, I missed a couple of digests, what only happened once? Are you referring
to the rumour that Del-Boy was caught in bed with someone's wife?

    Smirk ;-)

Actually I like all three kb players, Kev, Del and Jordan so there's no debate
as far as I'm concerned. They are all DIFFERENT and, as such, bring different
    elements into the band.

Does anyone else think that LTE is VERY DT in places?

I wonder what kind of music Chromakey is. Progressive, I assume, but that's
a very wide umbrella. Any DT songs that might be a little similar? Is it
describable? Is there a place to download MP3's so I can sample it? Thanks,
    folks.

PS Awake is my favorite DT album but I like Derek's hair color better than
    Kevin's. ;P

This is all pretty good stuff...but it's definitely not traditional jazz. Or maybe it is depending on one's definition of jazz. However, the players you listed are all pretty much fusion players. Metheny's new stuff probably falls into more of a new-age/pop jazz type sound.

    > Anything by Chick Corea's electric band.

I actually think Corea's "Akoustic Band" is even stronger. Ironically, it's a trio of Chick, with normally electric players John Patitucci and Dave Weckl on bass and drums respectively. Fortunately the rhythm section makes the change from electric to acoustic extremely well..

    > And older stuff like Duke Ellington if you can get into bebop.

Duke Ellington wasn't bebop. Duke Ellington was big band and swing jazz music which had its peak in the 20's and 30's. Bebop started in the 40's and was Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, etc.

Exactly, like I said about learning the whole song so you don't have to count odd time sigs. The brain subconsciously takes over and does it for you. A bit like learning by parrot fashion I suppose. Quote: "If you think you stink", Billy Sheehan at his last bass clinic at The Bass Centre here in London, UK.

There is also another way, use a music score or tab. When I used to do my piano exams, you were awarded extra marks if you could play without the music. As I was practising I used to see the music going along in my head (playing with my eyes closed or partially so). It helps if you have at least a semi- photographic memory though .......

Stop Press: There is a RUSH convention taking place from 2pm to midnight at Leicester University (UK) on Saturday 19 September. Tribute band Tom Sawyer will be playing.

But more on topic, anyone got any more news on the LTE tour? I heard rumours over here in the UK that LTE have already played some dates in the US. Is this true?

I also hear there will be another CD (LTE 2) and that recording for this starts soon. Info please.

Not only that, the wait for Metropolis Part 2 is doing my head in. I did an interview for Guitarist Magazine (UK) with Johnny P after the first Paris gig this year (Feb 1998) when he said that he had to finish writing the lyrics so it could be included on the next DT studio album.

    Aaaaaaaagh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When???????????????????????

OK, for those that didn't attend and are just dying to know what happened, there's now a lengthy Powermad review on the Pixel Planet website. Check it out, and be sure to take advantage of the "Post Your Comments" section when you don't agree with my reviews.

Of course, you're now saying to yourselves, "But Dave, you lazy-assed bastard, Powermad was last month. What took you so long to get this together?" Well, while it is true that I am lazy, I think the following exchange will explain some of the delay:

The scene - an airport at 5AM. I had already been away from home for two weeks, and was picking up my wife. When getting the luggage I remarked, "Hey, where's the laptop?"

Her reply: "I didn't bring it. I didn't think you would need it for anything."

Two weeks or so later, I return home, only to deal with a magazine editor for a few days. If you're unfamiliar with this particular species, they often ask questions like "I haven't actually read your article yet, but I have some questions about it." - this is a true quote

Anyway, enough of my yammering. Check out the article, and let me know what you think.

And of course, we got gameriquy, the virtual insanity people. They rock, too. And let's not forget about 1970s vintage Stevie Wonder. Man that guy is funky. In responce to Arash's review....

    >I think this album is good but nothing really especial. >The style is more like "Angels Cry" than the incredible "Holy Land".

    >To tell you the truth, I expected a better album than this after the >outstanding "Holy Land". I don't know if "Fireworks" is a step forward ! >But it's still good.

I actually must beg to differ on "Angel's Cry" vs. "Holy Land" Both albu= ms are incredible, granted, but for me, "Angel's Cry" gets the playing time. It just seems to me, that the "Angra sound" is a better match for the sty= le of "Angel's Cry." Holy Land is much more progressive, with different sty= les and EXTREMELY melodic. I really like the album... but I look to Angra to give me some speed, vocals, etc.

I'm looking forward to getting Fireworks. I was expecting a compromise between Angel's Cry and Holy Land, but I guess I'll see exactly where the= y come down...

    'Jammers,

It's been a really long time since I post on the jam...but...

I just came back from Mike P. drum clinic in montreal. Must I say, I learned a lot of cool stuff about odd times and syncopation! Mike was in a great mood. Of interest, he mentioned he will hit the studio with JP and Levin/Rudess for LTE II in exactly one month. As it was previously discussed on the jam, he would like to tour with LTE. He said that maybe next year they will tour with Platypus, LTE, Dream Theater and Rudess's group (?) all together and would all perfom in the same evening. This would be really interesting.

Before the clininc, the upcomming home video was playing (I got a chance to see Hogarth and Rothery perform Marillion's "easter" with the boys as well as the Silent man video), really good and I can't wait for october 27th!

Also Mike kindly signed my LTE and FII CDs...that's it for now
