    Hey,
            Someone mentioned La Villa as a piece that Rush thought would be dificult
    to master themselves, and I can't agree more. I play guitar, and granted I
    KNOW the basslines in this are tough to play, but the guitar is sooooo hard
    to remember. Alex plays many of the same patterns in different positions
    and it kills me! I gave up on this baby a long time ago, though I noodle
    with it constantly. This would be the first song I would want to add to any
    kind of covers medley I would create. The "Monsters" theme is just too much
    fun to play.
            As I go back and think of the songs I learned early in my playing career,
    its so easy to tear off a Van Halen, Cheap Trick, or Mr. Big song without a
    second thought. But the stuff I've tried so hard to learn over time
    (Megadeth's "Darkest Hour" and "Hook In Mouth" being primary in my mind,
    but there are others) still seems to escape me. My biggest weakness is
    arpeggios, with alternate picking patterns on different strings coming
    second. But the old stuff I learned was all power chords and pull offs, so
    its like second nature. Give me ten minutes of power chords (G N' R's
    Estranged) and my memory is fine. Three minutes of arpeggios? I'm crying in
    no time.

    trying to look the part rather than concentrating on the song that you are
    trying to play as well as kevin ever did. i always thought he was a better
    player than you, and does it without being as condecending......hail to thee
    Kevin Moore the only keyboard player that dream theater ever REALLY had in the

    Well, I've had the album 2 weeks now and the 'Lisbon' single for about 6
    weeks and I've got over my initial disappointment that Angra have not
    produced another 'Holy Land'.

    'Holy Land' was the first album of their's which I was able to find and
    buy, and since then I've bought up most of their stuff, so I recognise that
    'Holy Land' was a much more 'progressive' sounding album than their debut,
    'Angels Cry'. Also, having caught them live a few times, its clear that
    they are fundamentally a Heavy Metal rather than Prog/Metal band. Nothing
    wrong with that - and in fact they're a rather good HM band!

    All the same, 'Fireworks' is a return to the style of 'Angels Cry' in the
    sense that it consists of mainly melodic speed-metal influenced songs and
    the Brazilian influences, present on 'Holy Land', have been dispensed
    with. It is however a very solid album, just not earth-shattering.
    There's still songs that will appeal to the Prog/Metal fan, like 'Paradise'
    and there are plenty of excellent driving guitar solos. My favourites are
    'Wings of Reality', 'Paradise', 'Gentle Change' and 'Speed'.

    Their record company in France report that they've sold 17,000 copies in
    two weeks, when 'Holy Land' sold 22,000 in 18 months! Still can't find a
    record store in London which has it in stock - or even on order, mind you.
    I don't mean to suggest that their success in Europe is just down to some
    strange gallic appeal, but more to the way their record company have backed
    them effectively and promoted them well.

    At the album release events in France, a video was shown of the band in the
    studio with the producer, Chris Tsangarides and on a couple of occasions he
    is shown recommending that the band hold back on some of their more
    elaborate arrangements. I'm told that there were about 1000 people in the
    Virgin Megastore for their short 30 minute concert on September 4th and 600
    copies of the album were sold that night.

    The Iron Maiden fanzine 'Neighbour of the beast' has an excellent interview
    with Andre Matos on its website (thanks for pointing this one out Ties).
    The first paragraph of which contains the following sentences: <<So, on
    Holy Land, we went a little bit too far on the experimental side. I would
    say we were doing things much more progressive. But this time, we wanted
    to do a heavier album, to do something more straight(forward). >>

    Other articles I've read on the background emphasise the fact that a move
    to a more straight-forward sounding album, was a deliberate decision. The
    rhythm section were apparently dissatisfied with their sound on 'Holy
    Land'. Whilst the main songwriters (Andre and Raphael) listen to Classical
    music as well as Metal, the drummer and bassist are real metal-heads, so I
    think that there has been a deliberate policy to hold back on the
    progressive side for this album.

    Listen guys...and gals... Some friends of mine have a radio show at my
    college called TOTAL DISTORTION. They play all sorts of shit....Thrash,
    Death Metal, 80's glam rock, Black Metal, Industrial, Hardcore, etc.
    You'll hear stuff like Savatage, Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Angra,
    Bruce Dickinson, Maiden, Priest as well as a lot of harder stuff like
    Slayer, Fear Factory, Cradle of Filth, Korn,......you get the idea...all
    types of metal. The show is every Wednesday night at Midnight Eastern
    time. And it's broadcasted live on the internet through real audio. We
    don't get too many hits on the internet, and I know people on this list
    would defnitely be interested in it. We take requests as well. If you

    Brian, don't go expecting to hear prog-rock with ChromaKey. And don't
    expect any DT style keyboard solos or anything. The whole album is very
    moody, rather similar to "Space Dye Vest".

    I got Symphony X's "Twilight in Olympus" (latest album) a few hours ago..I dont know..I havent heard "Divine Wings.." so I dont know if they evolved or not..the thing is,whats so special with this band? the artwork of the cd isnt all that good,they even admitted they had no time to pick a title for the album..or draw a cover..and they did it in a day or two..they give too few live performances (their company Inside out puts a lot of pressure on them..4 albums in 4 years?! they released "Damnation Game" and the deadline for "Divine Wings.." was already set!)..the guitarist is really good but his solo are all Malmsteen-like..whats so kewl about it,he wont even sweep on the fretboard..just scales at 400bpm..the keyboardist reminds me of moore (when he dont play fast) while when it comes to speed he sounds exactly like Stratovarius Johanssen..as about the songs..that 13mins one was really good (though it does remind me of DT..awake and Images and their debute) but the rest? they say they care about melody and not self indulgent music but none of the songs were catchy..ok it doesnt have to be like Hanson but songs like Metropolis or Voices ARE catchy..and they're really prog stuff (forgot Scarred :) )..i still dont know..along with that CD i also got "Still Life" by Fates Warning..the latest live album..gee..they are better than DT :)

    Okay, with the recent discussion of King Crimson I decided to pick up Lark's Toungue In Aspic the other day.

    Whoever here suggested LTiA wasn't a good one to start with, then your damn right :) Not that it's bad album, the more I listen the more I like, just that's it's taken me quite a few listens to really get into this one. LTiA I & II and Exiles being my favs.

    Now comes the next part: what should I check out next? With such an extensive discog to select from it's rather baffling. Suggestions? I also have a tape copy of Thrak (cheers Evan) and I dig it - if that helps...

    Any help would be muchly appreciated,

    hi jam, since the new outbreak of KevMO vs DS I'll post stupid things, too. First, has anybody noticed the nice bassline TLC's Waterfalls has?? Everytime I hear that song it gives mr chills. Then I noticed that MTV obviously plays different videos for the same song in US than they did in Europe. Common?Comments? Then the guy I lent I&W and FII gave 'em back and said he really liked it and his4-year-old daughter Autumn loved, so hopefully he'll shop for DT next time. Finally, in my shame, I have to admit, that the 3 discs that introduced me from Chris de BUrgh to 'harder' stuff (Lynch MOb-Lynch Mob; Badlands-Voodoo Highway; Poisom-Flesh&Blood) still belong to the group of discs that get most playtime in my stereo. I wonder if there's anybody besides me who thinks that CC Deville can play a tasty solo. He may be not as technically able to play as JP but still with great taste for the music.(With that I ain't sayn he's better than JP,ok? Never said that!)By the way I think that Lynch on the Lynch MOb does a great - super - job. Plays chops, but I wouldn't just call it shredding. Is there a Dokken record maybe, that reflects the same knd of soloing and songwriting, or did DonD do it all byhimself??
